Everything You Love is Flammable
 

I live in East Texas. There is currently a fire raging uncontrolled across our landscape and so far more than 3200 acres of land have been consumed.

My Great Grandma's house is gone. Both my Grandma's homes are being threatened on opposite ends of the fire.

I am sitting here on the porch of my house in town waiting for my family to finish packing some things, watching the red glow of the sky and the pillar of smoke so big it is like it is consuming the sky. I can smell the stench of burning houses, like plastic really, and the oddly sickening smell of burning pine mixed in. I am intrigued by the fact that the ashes that are raining down look like an almost pleasant snow.

Then it hits me. Everything I have ever loved in my life is flammable. You hear it as a joke sometimes on the internet, but when that proverbial fire is banging down your door, it really hits home. Everything is on fire.

Ahh, I see that it is time to go. So I finish this sentence and grab my bag as we run from the all consuming flame. Wish me luck.

Damn, that's so sad :( I hope everything goes well and that you find a safe place to stay in the meantime. Are there any firefighters trying to kill the fire (waterplanes or fireplanes or such?).

That's what you get when you play with matches in oil country.
