"Canadians Want Cheneys Head On A Pike" or "Should Cheny Be Arrested For War Crimes?"

So there's this Cheny guy, what with the old Vice President of some place called America. (I've never heard of it.)

Quote:

Dick Cheney is planning on heading to Vancouver on the 26th to promote his book.

A Vancouver lawyer by the name of Gail Davidson who is the cofounder of an international group of Lawyers Against the War wants either Canada to either

Bar him entry into Canada
To arrest him in Canada on arrival and try him for war-crimes, and crimes against humanity in Canada
To arrest him in Canada on arrival and extradite to a country willing to try him for war-crimes and crimes against humanity
Anyway, this is the same man who shot someone in the face and then had that man apologize for it. (God help them when they go fishing.)

Anyway, the Chen-mister is coming to Canada. Vancouver, specifically. According to some protestors over here, his head on a pike. I cannae say I blame them. The purpose of his visit is to promote his book, which I believe is an autobiography, where he advocated the use of torture during the Iraq war, specifically water-boarding. You can see it done to someone here.

Here's a description:

The water fills the hole in the saran wrap so that there is either water or vaccum in your mouth. The water pours into your sinuses and throat. You struggle to expel water periodically by building enough pressure in your lungs. With the saran wrap though each time I expelled water, I was able to draw in less air. Finally the lungs can no longer expel water and you begin to draw it up into your respiratory tract.

It seems that there is a point that is hardwired in us. When we draw water into our respiratory tract to this point we are no longer in control. All hell breaks loose. Instinct tells us we are dying.

Anyway, here's an excerpt from a site which has lots to say on it:

Quote:

The Canadian government should be prepared to bring criminal charges against former US Vice President Dick Cheney for his alleged role in the torture of detainees when he visits Vancouver on September 26, 2011, Human Rights Watch said today.

Overwhelming evidence of torture by the Bush administration, including at least two cases involving Canadian citizens, obligates Canada to investigate Cheney to comply with the Convention Against Torture, Human Rights Watch said. In addition, Canadian law expressly provides for jurisdiction over an individual for torture and other crimes if the complainant is a Canadian citizen, even for offenses committed outside of Canada. Canada ratified the Convention against Torture in 1987 and incorporated its provisions into the Canadian criminal code.

“The US has utterly failed to meet its legal obligation to investigate torture by the Bush administration, but that shouldn’t let other countries off the hook,” said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. “Cheney’s visit to Vancouver is a rare opportunity to remedy this shameful failure to uphold the rule of law.”

Human Rights Watch has documented the role of senior Bush administration officials in authorizing torture of detainees, including “waterboarding” and prolonged exposure to heat and cold. The US was directly responsible or complicit in the alleged torture of at least two Canadian citizens, Maher Arar and Omar Khadr.

Cheney played a key role in the formulation of US detainee policy and was a member of the National Security Council “Principals Committee,” which approved interrogation policies. He was critical in pressing US Justice Department officials to provide authorization in mid-2002 for the use of coerced interrogation methods. Cheney’s memoir, In My Time, published in August, details his continued support of abusive interrogation techniques, which he calls “critically important … to … national security.”

“Canada’s own investigation into the Maher Arar case shows there is sufficient evidence to investigate Cheney for authorizing torture,” Roth said. “Bush, Cheney, and others authorized the abusive detention regime that Canadians and thousands of others were subjected to. They should be held accountable.

Otherwise, y'know, it's just great publicity for Dick's book.

By the looks of it, they've got legal grounds for a legitimate arrest, which is just going to make it that much more sad when his political status has that waved away as a triviality because really can we arrest someone so important for a little thing like torture? Next you'll be saying we should take him in for a traffic violation.

Silly Canada, if you commit war crimes, genocide and torture you get the nobel peace prize not arrested.

war crimes only apply to the losers.

But, is this legit? I dont think the VP is the guy that gets to make the call on things like this.

He authorized the torture of detainees by executive order, yes. He was basically Bush's puppet master for Bush's entire presidency. Both him and George W. Bush should be arrested and tried for war crimes in the Hague, then hanged by the neck until dead. If Canada actually had the balls to do it I would celebrate.

But it won't ever happen. They won't arrest him, nor would they actually be able to prove anything without access to all the top secret memos that actually authorized the torture. Personally I'd execute him based merely on circumstantial evidence and his own admittance to authorizing waterboarding and intense defending of it on the public stage but I ain't the Hague.

Maybe they could use testimony from the people who were tortured but it's not like the U.S. would give them access to Mohammed or Zubaida. They'd have to get them out of Gitmo first.

Basically we all know he's guilty but ever actually proving it to the Hague with actual memoranda and hard evidence would be impossible, since he could just claim that his extreme defense of waterboarding is all hypothetical and that when he admitted they did it was you know just kidding. Plus he would never actually be arrested for war crimes ever unless people actually got up off their asses and toppled the U.S. government and had a revolution. If that occurred we could just try him ourselves. But it ain't gonna happen.

It's unfortunate he never tortured any Jews because then Israel could try him and they could give a rat's ass about the actual evidence against a prisoner, plus the Mossad could help spirit him away.

There's something about this statement that seems somewhat extreme, even though I'm totally all for trying Cheney for war crimes and I frankly support the notion that Satan or any other deity has an entirely unpleasant corridor in hell waiting for him.

I don't blame Canada for wanting to arrest our smug prick for being such a damn prick. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if Cheney himself is fully aware of this and is STILL going through with his book promoteing in Vancouver reguardless of his potantial arrest.

Though I doubt Cheney will get arrested anytime soon. I will wish them the best of luck reguardless. After all life is full of surprises.

Well presumably the punishment for war crimes and crimes against humanity is death, at least that's what it was for the Nazis and Japanese Military. Of course maybe that's only if you murder hundreds of thousands of civilians and POWs or something (on purpose, as opposed to doing it "by accident" like has been done for the past ten years in Iraq and Afghanistan)...let's just say if he doesn't deserve to be executed he deserves to go away for a long long long long long long time then, which would effectively be a life sentence for someone who's more machine now than man, twisted and evil.

But it isn't going to happen. I mean I'm surprised Cheney is still listed as a living person, he doesn't even have a heart (not that he ever had one metaphorically, but now he literally does not have one).

Is it too late to catch the last flight out? Can we citizen's arrest?
