Judge spanks his child for using the internet

*WARNING THIS IS A GRAPHIC VIDEO ON YOUTUBE THAT IS SHOWING A GIRL WITH CEREBRAL PALSY BEING SPANKED. IN THE INTEREST OF BEING ACCURATE, I'M LINKING THE ENTIRE STORY THEN EMBEDDING THE YT VIDEO*

I just picked up this story this morning. It went from Reddit a few days ago, to Torrentfreak, and is now all over the news. Amazing how people have picked up this story and may miss the point.

A then 16 year old girl used Kazaa to download onto a family computer. She was caught by her father who happens to be a judge in Texas. What happens next is raw emotion. The girl is now 23 years old, and this "quiet crime" of 7-8 years ago has just gotten out into the public in a LARGE way.

I'll use the Torrentfreak story here for everyone to watch and discuss:

Downloading copyright material without the permission of rightsholders is often portrayed as a heinous crime and treated as such by many judges across the United States. But what is an appropriate punishment for this apparently increasingly wicked act? Multi-million dollar fines? Jail? For one sixteen year-old girl using file-sharing software KaZaA, it was a savage beating, delivered by the leather belt of her father, Judge William Adams. And it was all caught on camera.

These days it’s a rare week if news of some insane overreaction to illegal file-sharing isn’t being reported in the media.

We’ve seen some of the worst examples – the multi-million dollar fines, the jail sentences, PROTECTIP, SOPA, right through to the ordinary guy in the street being blackmailed by copyright trolls for a few thousands dollars.

None of these ‘punishments’ can proceed without the supposedly most upstanding members of our community that we call judges signing off on them. Judges rule on these cases, they decide on the levels of fines, they sign off on the ‘John Doe’ lawsuits.

Equally, some of them have even ruled against cruel and unusual punishments for file-sharers but not so Texas Judge William Adams, who prefers to administer punishment himself, in his own home, savagely – with a leather belt.

Below we have embedded a video shot in 2004, apparently just uploaded to YouTube by Adams’ then 16-year-old daughter Hillary Adams, the target of the cruel punishment.

“Aransas County Court-At-Law Judge William Adams took a belt to his own teenage daughter as punishment for using the internet to acquire music and games that were unavailable for legal purchase at the time,” the video’s description begins.

“She has had ataxic cerebral palsy from birth that led her to a passion for technology, which was strictly forbidden by her father’s backwards views.”

Hillary had been using the KaZaA file-sharing software to obtain music and games, a point mentioned by her mother towards the end of the video.

Gawker spoke with Hillary’s friend J. Andre Bardin who confirmed the man in the video is Judge Adams.

“That’s his voice, that’s his mannerisms, and that is his house,” Bardin said.

Hillary, who is now 23, says she decided to release the video because her father is up for re-election next week and she doesn’t want that to happen. A Facebook page called “Don’t Re-Elect Judge William Adams” can be found here.

A Reddit thread, dissecting Judge Adams’ life and rulings in the way only they know how, can be found here.

Of course, it would be completely unfair and wrong to suggest that this sort of disgusting behavior is common among judges. Many of them are upstanding citizens whose judgment is highly valued in a civilized society and this guy would have probably behaved the same way if he had pursued another profession.

Warning: Some will find the video extremely upsetting.

However you feel about downloading, whether it deserves massive fines, a second look, I don't think anyone can agree that corporal punishment is deserved in finding games to play online. From what's been said, Adams' abuse only got worse. Let's pray the man gets help for this disproportionate retribution.

It's so perfectly terrible in every way.

The daughter has cerebral palsy!

He made his abused wife take part!

He's a family court judge!

augghghhgh

What the crap?

CABAL49 11-02-2011 05:37 PM

I don't know what else. This was shitty.

Don't really want to expose myself to watching some kid get beat right now, but I did watch the first little bit just to see how it was caught, and it looks like she hid a camera in her room?

And then held onto it for 7 years (says she's 23 now in the story, and was 16 when this happened), to release it when she was, presumably, out of his house, and he was up for re-election?

All the horribleness of the story aside, that is, well I don't know how to word it without sounding like I'm putting undue levity here, but it's nice to see her dealing with the abuse like this. In other words, not broken and obviously knowing that it was wrong. AND is doing it now to help other people by ensuring an abusive man isn't allowed to preside over family court cases.

From reading the other versions of this story, Adams has no business being around family cases:

Quote:

In a court judgement last October, Judge Adams said that a child's statements 'amounted to no evidence' despite the fact his words had been confirmed by third party witnesses and recorded on video several times. The young person had also been interviewed by a child psychologist who believed the child.
According to Judge William Adams, all children are 'fantasizers' and their testimony should just be ignored.

The ACP thing seems like a milky footnote, I think people just shouldn't get beaten for using P2P software, or have parents like that.

This guy is going to be under a ridiculous amount of heat, though. The full awesome rage of the Internet will be unleashed. I will be surprised if he is re-elected. I'll be surprised if he remains a free man. Hope there's therapy in whatever state he's in.

Jagos 11-02-2011 06:26 PM

Oh, the heat is absolutely ridiculous. His name is worse than mud. Seriously, the girl posted this on Reddit... CNN... Everywhere to spread the story. The chances of him ever judging others is gone. And he's in Texas... Yeah...
