DmC had me and then it lost me
I will be perfectly honest and say I've never really been super excited for Ninja Theory's take on the Devil May Cry franchise. They do some stuff really well, but none of it is really the stuff I like about the DMC games. That and there was stuff floating around that painted them as really dismissive towards the original games and their fans and about how they wanted to make the DMC games less "Japanese," which also bugs me for a number of reasons I won't get into at the moment. I still figured it would be a good game, just not a good game in the ways I wanted it to be.
So, today this trailer went up. I'm watching it, and I'm finally in. This looks fun. It's bright, colorful, imaginative, and fast-paced. Begrudgingly, I admit that this looks pretty good. UNTIL the end, when we see what seems to be some ghost chick or a lady in another world or something. At that point, we get the following exchange: "Dante! It's chaos out here! But I found a way out!" "Where?" "There! I marked it!" Already we have a character whose roles in the game I expect will be relegated to, "This is how you use this ability, Dante!" and "Your next objective is the factor on the edge of town, Dante!" and "You've gotta help rescue me, Dante!" Not exactly something I'm looking for and the dialogue just doesn't seem to work. So that killed my interest. FAKE-EDIT: Someone linked me another trailer. Combat looks good, though something about it looks off in a way I can't name. I'm still really not liking the dialogue or Dante's friend. Also, someone pointed out that the eye gates may mean we end up saddled with forced stealth segments. I'm hoping not, but that could very well end up happening. I admit I'm biased, but this still just bugs the hell out of me. |
If it makes you feel any better, you are not the only one who hates this new direction. It screams what we like to call "we had a different idea for a game, but slapping a franchise name on it will get more money, so we shoehorned the usual trademarks of the franchise in." See the also WTF-inducing Brothers in Arms: Furious 4.

Stealth has no place anywhere near Dante.

why must we jump to conclusions?

I kind of wish that they do this in another series in a way or just gave it its own series. Because I really like the "World against you" thing. I like it and all other types of games that do the same but I really think that lumping it with Devil May cry I have been in the dumbest idea that they thought of. it looks like a rather good game on its own. Something that could stand on its own as a action packed silent Hill kind of game. But it definitely doesn't have the ham factor that Devil May cry is known for. |
Oh, so I finally figured out what was bugging me about the combat in that DmC trailer. Everything about it looks easy. It looks like it's really early in the game, so that could be why, but even so it doesn't seem hard. Like, Dante just floats in the air and juggles his enemies and nothing about it looks threatening or intimidating. He just blows through them like it ain't even a thing.
Rewatching and goddamn why does this game take itself so seriously. "I found the camera locations for this area..." Oh fuck you, I hate those repetitive diversions. |
OP trailer made it look like it could have been a pretty fun game, too bad they had to ruin it by getting rid of dante and putting in this new asshole I don't give a shit about cause he plainly isn't dante.

The DMC series as a whole is kind of a testament to how even a decent sane forms of evil like greed is is ultimately helpless before the power of sheer brainless shitfucking ego.

I'm really torn here because EHHHHHHH this reboot looks shitty. The world looks pretty cool and I like the design and stuff, but Dante looks like a punk-rocker douchebag instead of an over-the-top ridiculous demon cowboy rock star thing which I've always enjoyed. And the ghost lady thing seems somewhat interesting but her and 'Dante's interactions seem crappy and forced and Dante should never just like have chill boring-ass movie-script conversations with anyone.
'Go, save yourself' PTTTTTHHHHHHBT. On the OTHER hand, goddamn does that look like some fun combat and that transforming sword thing looks fucking awesome. But as Liz said it looks easy as piss. What I loved about DMC was that it was hard as fuck. The problem on the lower difficulties was always that the enemies just kind of stare at you half the time. So what this needs, and its very likely, unless this game will just be total shit, there'll be way more enemies and they'll do a lot more moving around and attacking. I hope. I'm really just confused about why they felt the need to redesign Dante. Because they ran out of room on his timeline I guess and they already did the 'younger and even cockier' version? Also did anyone else notice Dante appears to have an english flag stitched on his sleeve? The hell? |
TDK, I never noticed it to be honest.
I'm kind of mixed about this game. I wanna play it but I don't want to really accept this as another DMC game. Aw well at least the game play looks great and the worlds are pretty. |
Hey, I know what's the deal I have with the combat: The GET OVER HERE chain reminds me of God of War, in that your melee weapon has a fuckton of range or you can instantly get into the range of a stronger weapon whenever you want, without having to throw yourself in the middle of a bunch of enemies.
Clearly what needs to happen is that this guy meets up somehow with actual Dante - or this continuity's Vergil - who proceeds to berate him and beat him to a pulp and then take over the game. So, just like DMC4. |
