I Used To Play A Lot Of Skyrim, But Then I Got An Arrow To The Knee
Surprisingly, there is no knee armor specifically in the PS3 release.
ANYWAY: Skyrim is huge. I know it's huge. You know how huge? I've been playing for about fifty hours without really touching the main quest. Which gets kind of weird, because I get to be about level 30, and the giant, world ending dragons... aren't really as terrible as everyone makes them out to be. I mean, geez lady, I know you need five Ice Wraith teeth so you can keep your vegetables cold, but why don't you go kill some ethereal serpents yourself? I didn't know how to shoot fire out of my hands until I read it in a book, just buy the book. Geez. There's also the fact that Oblivion is better. Oh, don't give me that look, you know it's true. I mean, Skyrim has DRAGONS!, but Oblivion had the more traditional RPG set pieces, the more satisfying storyline and the bigger difficulty vs. play ratio. Let me explain - no, there is too much, let me sum up: in Oblivion, when you joined the Mage guild, they were like 'Here are necromancers, and are evil acting enough for you to kill guilt free. Here is a totally-seperate-from-the-main-quest thirty to forty hour quest line. Here is a satisfying conclusion to this quest line. Oh, you're going to spend a day and a half walking to Kvatch from here? Okay.' Because in Skyrim, (SPOILERS SPOILERS ABOUT STUFF!) you've got Winterhold and The Companions. And... well... they're not as amazing as Oblivion's Mage and Fighter guilds. It's like they turn you into a werewolf to compensate for that fact, a power I never ended up using. And the Winterhold questline is... what, 'Hey, the necromancers are actually pretty alright dudes despite every single one of them attacking you on sight, but here is one of the elven antagonist dudes and a detour on your way to DRAGONS!, and oh big exciting climactic battle, could've used that excitement like twenty minutes ago. I mean that aside from the DRAGONS! and the graphics and some of the new game mechanics - the shouts, the duel weapon, dual spell thing, the daedric quests that you don't actually want to do because they're actually consequential and dark, and the poorly done political intrigue, Oblivion was better. I still get about a hundred and fifty seperate side quests in every town, and I still play the same character I made in Oblivion because I'm boring like that, but that's how I role play, bitch. It's like liking the original Diablo because of its more single player focus and its more DND approach and darker tone than Diablo II's arguably better but more standard storyline, gameplay and friendlier multiplayer. And on that note, do I join the Stormcloaks or the Imperials? |
Skyrim'd still be like 100x better if they let Obsidian do the writing.
Nope. Oblivion is terrible. Like just, objectively, terrible. Especially compared to Skyrim.
The fighter quest line in Oblivion was what even? I don't remember. I know I beat it... something about dudes who do drugs? Or something? The fighter quest in Oblivion ends with you breaking a generations long curse and stealing souls from a daedric lord, AND you get to see the dude who you saved in the end of the main quest line. I never even beat the mage quest line in oblivion, because again boring and stupid and full of obnoxious fetch questy bullshit, and there was no real feeling that I had to do anything, while the mage questline in Skyrim actually involved world changing events and people right from the get go. Dark Brotherhood is, arguably, the only thing Oblivion did right, and even that honestly fell horribly short in a lot of ways, like the murder mansion quest line coulda been way more fun if you could have convinced people to kill each other out of paranoia, but nope. Unless you consider Oblivion to just be the Shivering Isles and nothing else, in which case, yeah, it was pretty aces. Also: Go Stormcloak if you're a Nord, or Imperial if you're anything else. Feels better that way. |

...But yeah okay, from what I played of Skyrim, it was pretty aces. Every mention if it reminds me I need to save up for it. |
My experience with Oblivion: about 5-10 hours before giving up because it was A) boring, B) had a terrible leveling system (fuck you attributes), C) enemies that end up stronger than me by level 6 because I'm not "leveling up right" since I'm not getting +5 to the attributes I upgrade because I'm not following the contrived and bullshit rules of the leveling system.
My experience with Skyrim: 90+ hours of pure awesome, as well as Sneak and Archery skills that are aces (compared to Oblivion's which are terrible) e- Like I'm pretty sure the fighter's guild (or maybe the mages guild, I dont remember) had me go fetch X amount of ectoplasm without telling me where the fuck I can find ghosts. Meanwhile in Skyrim the only fetch quests are miscellaneous quests that have no impact on the story because they're just filler provided by the Radiant Quest system. e2- Also Seil, I hate you forever now because you brought up that horrid meme that needs to die in a fire and be forgotten in the abyss. |
The writing in Skyrim was a let down. The storylines were epic, but short, and by the end I never felt I deserved the reward I got for about half of them. Like the Mages one. Fun quest line! Did not make me the most qualified mage in the land, or even the school. The Thieves guild one was great until you had to, y'know, sell your soul, and that was never made a big deal of ever. Companions might have been ok, but frankly they were so boring and generic I never went that deep into the story line.
Don't even get me started on the Blades 'choice' thing. Actually Skyrim fell short a lot in the choice department, which is just a shame. I'm looking forward to the mods. I don't recall Oblivion well enough to say it was better though. I enjoyed it at the time, but that was ages ago and I'll get nostalgic. Skyrim was prettier for sure though! |
Oh yeah, the Blades thing.
They were pretty terrible in Oblivion, they failed in everything in the beginning of the game, but they semi-redeemed themselves in the end. But lets not do anything original for the next one, this order of people whose sole purpose was defending the Septim blood line which died out two hundred years ago is like "Hey, there's some crazy dragon stuff going on. How 'bout that!" And I'm like 'What the crap, thjere's no septims here!' Except there was because I carry around ten thousand Septims regularly because there's nothing to do with it but buy health potions. Oh and hey marriage system, just what you need in your save the world quest: commitment. And it's not like, three or four women that you form an emotional attachment to through their actions or good writing, it's "Ah sweet! You found me a mammoth tusk! Let's bang!" |

I... kinda scratched my head at that as well, but whatever. |
No seriously, I want to negarep you so hard.
So many parts of your posts make me reach for the negarep button that isn't there.
The arrow in the knee joke has been killed and resurrected for more killing far too many times. Oblivion's mechanics were awful, the skills were clumsy, the starting choices were horrifically restricting for such an open game and the stats were poorly designed. The reason a lot of that doesn't appear in skyrim is because it didn't work and wouldn't work for the result they wanted. The writing was shaky in Skyrim, but it was just as lifeless, if not more, in Oblivion (excluding the Dark Brotherhood, they were the only awesome thing besides Sheograth). Make sure you play both games with the same level of sobriety so you don't taint your results this time. Join the Stormcloaks if you want your character to be rebellious or a racist douche. Imperial if your character should act more honorable or loyal. |
I played Oblivion and Skyrim almost back to back, like within a month or two of each other.
Overall Skyrim is so much better then Oblivion but I am willing to say a few things Oblivion did better. 1.Spellcrafting: So hilariously broken, but lots of fun till you get to the high enough level where all magic becomes worthless. 2. Dark Brotherhood: Although the end of the quest line was better in Skyrim, the variety of kinds of murders you got in Oblivion (my favorite being the house with a bunch of people that turns into a whodunit and you are the writer with knives as your pens.) made the DB quests in it more fun then Skyrim overall. 3. Shivering Isles: SHEROGORATH. THAT IS ALL. 4. uhhhhh....shit Actually now that I think about it, I was enjoying it while I played it, but I barely remember any standout moments. That is usually a poor sign with a game I apparently spent 70 hours on and only recently played. I guess I am happy I saved the Isles for later cause without good ol Sheo, I think I would of stopped playing much sooner. Wait, yeah, I remember trying to trudge though the main quest out of just seer "well i might as well". In fact, I hated the end with the big battle. "WOW LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THAT GUY! How do we fight him?" "WE DON'T! Quick! Run under his legs like it's a freaking cartoon." That was a standout moment, for a bad reason. |
All I'm saying is that Oblivion is better in the role playing sense. Like "I'm getting this done. This is all me."
Like the mage questline in Skyrim? It's "follow everyone to ruins, find giant magic thing." Then it's like "find staff." Then it's like "unbelievably easy boss fight." And for the Companion quest? You kill a bunch of werewolf hunters. Then a witch. Then the tomb battle. The only reason that no one else did it was because they weren't asked. Kodlak's journal said "most of my guys wouldn't do this, so I sent that new guy out there. In Oblivion, it feels more like you are the hero of the land, that you're getting things done. The quest lines are longer. It feels like there's more at stake. In the mage questline in Oblivion, it was like "this Necromancer we've spent the last three hours characterizing as this unstoppable evil will destroy and conquer all." In Skyrim it's like "This magic ball is glowing and this elf guy is kind of a douche." |
