Downplayed PSX Games

So last week finding lots of time, I went and bought a few games. One of them happened to be FFVIII. So I played it...and played it till I finished it. Without a doubt, it is now my favorite Final Fantasy game I have played. And so I have found that I also have more time, with it being summer and all, and have decided to go and play all those other PSX games I had never finished or enjoyed. So, top of the list was Chrono Cross. And playing it again....I gotta say, it ALSO is turning into one of my favorite RPGs.

All the while I have been playing these games, I have been recalling all the negative things I have heard over the years here about these games. While I can understand some people may not enjoy certain types of stories or characters, in comparrison to other games, I;d have to say that these are really fun and enjoyable games. Dare I say that FFVIII is an amazing game, both on the idea front and with all it acomplished to create a unqie world and such.

So what does the world say. Post up some PSX games you think aren't played much and why you think they're great. Or tell us what it is the two games I mentioned got right or wrong. Not really putting this up for heated debate, but more of a homage to two games that seem to me to be really great and we should talk about them some. And the others people mention as well.

Brave Fancer Musashi. I love the humor in it, and the voice overs, while limited to dialogue related to the plot, are pretty good. Plus, the combat is pretty polished, and is difficult, but not hard.

Threads of Fate. This game is so cute, I wish the polygon count was higher. The plot is excellent in my opinion, and it's a pretty easy game, good if you want a break from more difficult RPGs.

You should know my answer to these type of questions by now: Einhänder. I think it's not played enough because not many people knew about it. Hell, I never heard of it until I saw it in a store demo. And even then, I didn't kno the name of the game because the dumbass store didn't put the title of the game anywhere. But since this was one of Squaresoft's side-projects, I guess they didn't feel the need to publicize it. I think the same holds true for Brave Fencer Musashi.

Well, I prefer the PC versions, but Broken Sword 1 & 2 were also released for the PS1 (maybe under the title Circle of Blood), and I think so were some of the Discworld PC adventure games.

Of course, given the abismal load times of Broken Sword 1, your better off with the PC version.

Other than that, I really liked Metal Slug X.

I liked Megaman X-4, in my opinion it was the best one out of the X series. The first Megaman X game you could have Zero as a main character, and since it had two slightly altered stories gave it more depth then the previous games. It was also the first game to show how different X and Zero were, X was a do-gooder not wanting to kill the Reploids under the order of the general guy, and Zero was just a bad ass who did his job. And when Zero killed the chick (her name escapes me at the moment) the game got really dramatic in one cutscene. Also it also glimpsed into Zero's past as a maverick.

And the two things I didn't like about FF:8 is that the villians changed too much. unlike in the other FF games when you grew to hate the villian through out the entire game. The other thing was the fact that common enemies leveled up with you. I could train forever and be able to defeat bosses in one round or less, but if I go back to the begining of the game and fight one of those T-rex things, the battle is actually hard.

Ape Escape. I spent many a happy weekend trying to get all those crazy monkeys.

Persona. Both the first one and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment. By the way, the whole Megami Tensei series (known in the US as Revelations) is way too underrated outside Japan, while there it is one of most famous RPG series, along with Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior and Zelda. All Megami Tensei were original and innovative games, especially the option of talking to the demons instead of just fighting them, and even scaring them away or convincig them to help you; but the Persona were really the best ones, with they take on demons, supernatural, psichology and fashion statement. In fact, Persona 2 has one of the best character designs that I've seen in video games. It's a shame that Persona: Innocent Sin never got translated.

I think Bushido Blade is heavily underrated. It is a unique fighting game. Being a swordsmen myself I was amazed at the amount of realisum(sp). Another easily forgotten game would have to be Digimon World 2, bear with me for a moment. You do not have to be a fan of the show yo like this game. It is fun and challenging. You can also create a party of unique creatures, and I always thought that Digimon was more mature than Pokemon. If your a TBRPG fan I recomend that you check it out.

Legend of Dragoon. It had a unique combat system, great magic, good (At the time) graphics, and was ahead of Square in the Talking Movie realm by about a year and a half.

Toss in the ability to transform into a walking tank at the end of the game, and you have a very sweet game. I want a sequel so bad...
