Draw Mohammed Day 3 causes Pakistan to Block Twitter

Now, instead of shoving a bunch of links and news pieces to you guys, i just wanna show one video about it.

Mind you, this is from a channel heavily inclined against organized religion (but not in any violent manner, just in debate form), so there is Bias. But it's short, to the point, and illustrates the event fairly well...

So, of course, polarizing subject... but it is rather amusing how over the years (this being it's 3rd edition) the reaction changed and.. can i say it weakened? Feels like it.

So, everybody on the webs were posting this o<-< as an allegory of a "drawing" of the prophet Mohamed of the islamic faith as a form of protest over a well known incident (and several others) of violent, extremist censorship... and of course, there were many other drawings too.. it seems it worked... to some extent.

I feel really sorry for these trolls that they are being censored in Pakistan, which is presumably what they wanted to happen? Confusing. Let's burn some qurans and post it on Facebook to see if we can get it banned in some more countries, because something something.

actually if i'm not mistaken this movement is connected to 2 very specific incidents.

One a few years ago where a Newspaper drawing of Mohammed caused a LOT of trouble

And more recently a Pakistani national that was arrested and could possible receive death sentence in court for 3 Tweets he made about Not bowing to Mohammed, but instead shaking his hand as an equal. He fled the country over death threats of thousands via facebook, but was deported when his flight stopped in a nearby country.

Doesn't seem to be trolling from where I'm sitting. It's almost like a reversed of trolling, the intent of their political statement isn't to get an emotional reaction, they want extremists to stop reacting because there's too much of it to react to. I recognize the voice of the person on the video, he burned several (Hundred?) thousand digital copies of the Quran for the exact same reasoning. And evidentally the methodology is working.

Honestly it seems sorta insulting to call a political movement like this trolls. Watching that video and listening to the reasoning behind their actions what on Earth would make you associate the word troll with them?

Because 90% of the time when people go out of their way to do stuff that'll piss of Muslim folks, they do it for shitty, racist reasons, so it's fairly easy to assume that this is merely another example of that.

This seems to be for good reasons and all that jazz, so more power to them, though it's depressing to know that there are probably a fair amount of folks using this as an excuse to be racist, too.

There is a fine line, actually, a set of remarkably fine lines, between trolling, racism, and this. For the time being, I shall call it goading as I elaborate.

Racism...well. Let's just not, shall we? I come from a family that doesn't believe in racism, so I can't talk about it, cause those lessons stuck. My bro'd be a better person to talk to about racism, he can actually disprove it in such a way that would probably get even the most racist people to rethink their ways.

Trolling...again. We know what that is. It is deliberately acting like a dick just to get a rise out of people. I suspect trolls are actually capable of feeding off of rage via the internet, which is why they do what they do. It nourishes them.

But this. I saw something like this once before. Deliberately acting terrible to a group of people just to make them realize how much terribleness there is out there, and that they can't afford to be sensitive to it all? Yeah. That's not goading anymore. That's more like educating a teenager why the google safesearch filter should NEVER come off unless you want to be mindraped. By example.

More power to these people, I say.

After the first four or five times you get attacked for being mixed race...

I'll be honest, every time I see a white guy talking about how they can "disprove racism," I have to fight the urge to drink myself to death.

Thadius 05-26-2012 03:57 AM

Okay so yeah maybe I should rephrase that, thanks Token.

Ahem. Didn't say I could. Said my bro could. And perhaps disproving it is a strong phrase. Even the most unreasonable, hate and spite filled people would find his arguments effective enough to make them think twice, if not change their ways. Hell if I can remember them, they didn't strike home with me because I didn't need them. Yes, I'm singing his praises, somebody has to, he's far too humble to do it himself.

This is not to say racism does not exist. I'm not so naive as to think that it is a figment of the imagination. I merely know that I do not partake of it. I hate people based not on the color of their epidermis or their lineage. My spite and scorn are reserved for those who prove themselves to be gigantic assholes in general, whereas my hatred is reserved for those who are dicks to me personally.

Sifright 05-26-2012 04:15 AM

Thadius, racism is inherently irrational

ergo rational arguments won't work.

Ergo you are talking nonsense

CABAL49 05-26-2012 05:46 AM

Yeah, I got to say I've seen more the racist element of this whole thing. Perhaps there is a genuine protest, but either way this isn't the best way to go about this. This adds fuel to the extremist fire and puts moderate Muslims in an uncomfortable position.
