The Amazing Origin Story: Uncle Ben Was Too Stupid To Live

HEY LET ME AWKWARDLY WRESTLE THIS GUN AWAY FROM THIS GUY MAKING SURE THAT IT IS AIMED AT MY HEART AT ALL TIMES

BIG WHOOPS

SPOILER ALERT UNCLE BEN DIES IN THE MOVIE GUYZ

I did like that it was because of an even pettier reason than in the Tobey Maguire movies, though. "You won't sell me milk? FUCK YOU!" At least Tobey Maguire was pissed about, what was it, $500 or something?

Anyway. I thought this movie was pretty good, although I think I went into it with lower expectations than some of you. I was annoyed it spent so much time on the whole origin again, though at least they changed it up enough to make it interesting, what with the parents mysteriously disappearing and the home-made webslingers and all that good stuff. They kind of decided to not go ahead and spell out that Richard and Mary were SHIELD agents, though I have no idea if this is part of the new Marvel movie canon or if it is still separated by differing copyright owners. In any case they left things rather opaque.

When Gwen Stacy found out he was Spider-Man, I figured she'd kick the bucket, but once Denis Leary found out, I was like " Captain Stacy is a for sure goner." And he was. I guess they are leaving the Gwen death for the sequel which will presumably also introduce MJ or whatever.

So. The Lizard. I think if this had been the fourth Tobey Maguire movie this would have come off a bit better, because Connors was in the background of all those movies so you knew they were building him up, and they probably would have had him paired with another villain which would help carry the movie. They invented a nefarious plot for the Lizard here which I think helped quite a bit in making him a good villain for a whole movie, although just not quite. Also this required making him intelligent in Lizard form...if I remember correctly I thought he was kind of a mindless beast when transformed, like the Hulk, but I can't remember, honestly. In any case, he wasn't as good a villain as the Green Goblin. At least that guy at the end doing the Willem Defoe impression has me thinking he'll be in the sequel, anyway.

Another nitpick: Peter was kind of a douchebag there at the end.

YEAH I PROMISE NOT TO GET IN YOUR DAUGHTER'S PANTS, NOBLE DYING OFFICER!

TWO DAYS PASS

HEY YO STACY LET ME IN YOUR PANTS!

You'd think they could have just ended it wherever and picked up this thread in the next one to at least let us think he gave it a good go. Oh, well.

He was also kind of stupid. Like seriously, dude, don't put your name on the camera you are using to take pictures of the Lizard. Then again he does share the same genes with Uncle Ben, so...

Anyway, what did the rest of you think? I'd give it a B+ or something. Honestly it came off as another Thor or Captain America to me, pretty good but not particularly earth-shattering. But I don't think it was trying to be. It was definitely a pretty good Spider-Man flick and I thought it did the character pretty well.

My friend is hyping this and saying I will love it more than I did when the first Spider-Man film came out ten years ago. Guess we'll see!

Eh, see, this is why people will end up hating it. They have too high an expectation for a Spider-Man reboot a mere ten years after the original came out. So when it is just an okay movie they will complain quite a bit, I think.

I walked into this movie with no expectations. I like the Raimi movies but I know they're not perfect. But this movie was just ass. I fucking hated everything about this movie. Everything from Andrew Garfield's terrible Jeff Goldblum impression to the stupidity of the Lizard's plot with that ridiculous chekhov's gun.

The one thing this movie had going for it was the actors but they're wasted on underdeveloped characters and the complete and utter failure of the script to successfully develop relationships. And whoever was in charge of editing this movie needs to be shot. How on earth is it possible to make a two-hour + movie that covers so little ground yet manages to feel rushed.

Fuck this movie. It's almost as bad as Green Lantern.

I keep getting told this is a very Ultimate-Spidey feel movie. I don't know the comics so I AM ASKING YOUUUUU how accurate is that? I know movie-verse is totes different but does it borrow heavily on Ultimate aspects?

I didn't get Spidey in the Avengers movie because of this movie. I don't like this movie.

you mean because this movie allows Sony to keep the license thus preventing them from using him?

Exactly. IMHO, the Avengers movie had great characterizations, I would've loved to see Spidey characterized like that.

This movie wants to be Batman so hard that it hurts.

The Oscorp influence and the circumstances around his parents death are reminiscent of Ultimate Spider-Man but it doesn't really fit the tone. If you wanna see what tone the movie is trying for then just look at Nolan's Batman.

Thor was better. But yeah, I liked this film. I liked that Andrew Garfield's Spiderman was more petty and that they drew out the origin story a bit more. In the comics and the original movie it basically comes down to Parker messing up, letting Uncle Ben die, remembering his dying words and living by them. Which is great but it's all a bit too sudden and not at all human like to immediately take up that mantle. It doesn't really feel like Garfield's Parker learns the true meaning of responsibility until the end of the film. And it seemed to be quite realistic of a teenager to have superpowers and still have difficulty asking a girl out or deciding he'd rather date a girl than live by a promise he made.

Really, he's nothing like Batman. Batman learns this stuff and then lives by the promise. This Spiderman is still so young, he's like 'I would stay away but I REALLY want to do her.'

$3000 and he only got paid $100.
