I was wondering.

Just a simple question. How many of you out there are interested in philosophy and philosophical debate? Or maybe you just like to twist logic in interesting ways to amuse and confuse your friends. Either way I'd like to see the general feelings on this. Perhasp we could con a mod into a stickied thread on the subject. More than likely I'll end up using my soon to be forthcoming knowledge of php and programing in general to create a forum on the subject. If you are interested in this kind of debate I could probably use your help. Note if I do decide to go forward with this project it will be sometime before it gets up and running so be patient. I once spent three years of spare time putting together a massive site which never recieved any vistors so I'm a little gun shy about this stuff now.

I am interested in philosophy. I think my posts on this forum would back up my claim, I enjoy searching for answers and just plain sprouting out long streams of words in an attempt to make them mean something. Look, I just did it now! You seem like an erudite individual, and if you have the ability to make a sight for philosophical discussion I most certainly would visit it.

by the way, your title is a great one for a stickied philosophy column, "I was wondering" so simplistic and yet so meaningful. great choice!

Well, I'm into Hobbes and Nietzche. Currently reading Thus Spake Zarathustra. It would be nice to have a chapter by chapter discussion of philosophical tracts somewhere.

Mostly I stick to the politics, but I've hit some Nietschze, some Plato & Aristotle, and the occasional other bits of this and that. Existentialism's cool.

I am by no means a student of philosophy in the general sense of how we think of it today. Rather I'm quite like the orginal greeks in that a look inwardly for truth and not to others, no matter how wise they may be. Now I in no way feel equal to any greek philosopher but I do admire the way the saw the world. In fact as I learn more about Socrates I find I have more and more in common with him. People assume philosphers and philosophy is highminded and contrived work. In reality most philosophers tried to make things as simple as possible. That is the simple beauty that drives me. I will not dismiss any ideal or claim as wrong simply because it is outlandish. I give everything a fair judgement and go from there. That in my opion is the essence of philosophy. Of course I now sound like a holier than thou prick, but one always runs that risk in matters such as this.

I'm more into Physics and understanding the world around me and screwing up my mind with concepts I can't understand.

Like trying to envision a hypercube flattened out in our 3d space. Or saying to myself: if the shape is a point in 1d, and the shape is a circle in 2d, and the shape is a sphere in 3d.....what does 4d look like.....

.....

Oh damn my eyes, ears and nose are bleeding again, excuse me.....

My line of thinking tends to be more towards that of Aristotle when it comes to the Greeks. I enjoy his view of stepping away and matching the circumstance to the solution. I believe Hobbes was really the one who picked up the ball from him in political thought with Locke taking his from Plato.

I myself am a physics major and plan to get a PhD. Man I really hope I get that far. This does not deter my from philosophy. In fact I find the philosophical method vary helpful when postualting. One still has to perform expriments but thought still has its place.

Interesting fact about myself, like the third one so far. I am slightly far sighted but my brain has learned to adjust so that I effectively have better than 20 20 vision. I learned a while ago that I can cross my eyes and then force them into perfect focus. I also learned that if I lam reading something and I cross my eyes so that two of the same letter overlap then focus it becomes 3D. A little later I found I could do the same with steroscopic maps. One day I was sitting in science class totaly bored because I already knew what the teacher was teaching. I noticed that on the front table in the lecture hall there where two faucets of the same size and shape right next to each other. So I crossed my eyes until they overlapped and focused. What resulted was either 4D or as close as 3D beings will ever get. I can't describe exactly what I saw but it was quite cool.

Anyways philopohy is like a hobby for me.

finally people who value philosophy, most people seem to think its outdated tripe, or the old one that realy pisses me off "theres no point because in philosophy there isnt any right answers.
morality, and duality are the two that have so far interested me most but to be truthfull ive enjoyed everything so far

I'm rather interested of what other people think is the meaning of life.
