NPF General Livestream Thread

So I hear a lot of NPFers have livestream or youtube channels. Well yeah. I'm one of them. I mostly host drunkstreams but sometimes I also host random gaming streams, mostly when I'm Isaacin' and I wish I had a place where I could go and say "Yo peeps, I'm streaming Meet'n'Fuck Kingdom 3: Ace Fucker in a few minutes. Care to join!? Commentary will mostly be heavy breathing but you can come join me on Skype, it's more fun that way"

I thought, why not make a thread, where everyone can just go and say: hey guys. I'm streamin' that game I'm playing but it's not gonna be a regular thing* (I actually hope that this thread will spark some regular things by giving some people an audience. We've had some fun events in the past, like a SMB3 Race that didn't get very much attention, sadly. And I hope shit like that is going to happen again at some point.) so I just post it here.

I know some people like Ryong and akaSM have their channels where they do stuff sometimes, but I don't actually know any details. So to get started, would everyone who has a channel and streams sometimes just say "hi i got channel yo" in this thread really quick? And if you care you can give me some more info, like, for example...

-Name of channel
-stream channel url
-if applicable: archive channel url (like, youtube or others because livestream's backlog is very unreliable, not sure about other services)
-Say something about your channel here
-If you've done some noteworthy streams you can list and if you wish even link them here
-E: Oh yeah, if you have any current things going you can totally also list them with a link maybe to your thread if you have one.

And this is what it looks like in action.

(Before you do things here's a few hints)Before you do things here's a few hints:
Not that I'm a pro, but there are some things I keep noticing in streams that aren't mine and well, I may not be entirely innocent but they are some things to keep in mind.

1. Test beforehand. No one wants to see you fiddle around with your stream and game settings for 30 minutes because you ran into a technical problem you weren't aware of. Always test using the machine, settings and the game you want to use. Test if the video works properly, if the game audio works, if the mic input works if potential co-commentators can be heard (usually goes through the same channel as game audio, so it should).

2. Also, something I keep noticing, not only in streams but also Let's Play videos: Make sure your game audio is NOT louder than the commentators. In fact, the game audio should be considerably lower than that. Livestream has an audio mixer that shows you the peaks, which makes it easily identifiable with VISUALS whether or not something is too loud.

3. So you want to capture your game window. That's cool. I'm down with that, in fact that's how I do it because streaming full screen games crashes my computer (I found that out through use of item 1. of this list). Just make sure You don't stream the borders of the window as well, or even worse: Your entire desktop. It's more desirable to cut a few pixels off the game than showing some annoying bright blue border surrounding your Amnesia stream.

4. Before you stream a particular game think to yourself: Is this really a good game to stream? Or would it be boring to watch? Could I make it interesting regardless? (Protip: If the game you're playing requires lots of reading it's probably not a good streaming game. If you really want to show people the game you should probably make a Screenshot LP)

I've been running a channel for a while (currently on haitus while I wait for the new power supply for my main computer) where I've had random games played, I always do some random FPS stuff like TF2 or Killing Floor and I plan to have one Let's Play running at any single time (current one is I Am Alive). I also do a Minecraft series with Thadius in case you run adblock when on NPF.

Channel is in my signature, though the banner ad takes you directly to the playlist for the minecraft let's play.

As for streaming, that requires a set time (which I almost never have, I've mainly had the recording schedule by the seat of my pants) and possibly requires a lot more computer power than I have at hand (I may look into using Xsplit though since apparently that's the only way for Dxtory to target stuff that doesn't use DX or OpenGL). It probably won't happen for a while until I get my channel completely figured out.

Is there a way to share a livestream account to have multiple users? It might easier for everyone to watch via one official npf channel or whatever?

I mean there's not much going on here, I play whatever vidya I'm in the mood for and apparently people like hearing me talk for some reason.

Whatever would give you that idea? *glances at his signature* Crazy talk.

Anyway here's my livestream and my FTL livestream thread.

Some time after I wrap my head around X-Com: Enemy Unknown I will probably do a livestream of that (unless someone beats me to it).

Also at one point a while back I streamed a game of SMNC for fun (even though nobody was watching) so I could see what my spontaneous commentary would be like.

PyrosNine 10-06-2012 05:47 PM

Pryos Nien has YOUTUBE.

Pyros Nine records videos of cheapy-free MMO's and the like, recently started recording a playthrough of Black Mesa, even though video compression and getting my mike to be audible are always tricky. The fact that I'm a soft spoken baritone with a nasal sine makes things even trickier- damn deviated septum!

I do have a Twitch.TV but I nos have much streaming capability for PC games, and can mainly only stream PS2 and Wii games.

ALSO: STREAMERS SHOULD JOIN NPFU STEAM AND POST AN EVENT OR A MESSAGE TO OTHER FORUMITES DECLARING STREAMING. BEST WAY TO GET VIEWERS/COMMENTATORS.

A Zarkin' Frood 10-07-2012 03:13 AM

Don't you have to be an admin to do that? Because I and maybe one or two other NPFites aren't admins there.

Yes, it works the same as sharing a forum account or do you mean something more sophisticated? It's a good idea I had too actually but I had this fear people would just keep using their own accounts because they already have them. But hey yeah, it might be nice to make one for the NPF-wide events, like Drunkstreams and Races... well the one race that has happened so far.

Ryong 10-07-2012 11:55 AM

So I have this stream. But I don't play much. I've done a playthrough of a few games already though and am going to be playing through Paper Mario in the near future. Like, possibly starting today.

Hey guys, I feel like streaming, and I'll be streaming Tokyo Jungle. I haven't played the game too much yet so I haven't got anything crazy unlocked yet. May or may not be fun regardless.

akaSM 10-13-2012 07:08 PM

I wasn't around to watch you live but, that game looks really interesting. Too bad I don't have a PS3 :<

Also, the progress bar was spoilery after you started your black buck game :V
