Holy shit how are people so stupid? (WarZ)
So a game came out recently on Steam called WarZ. This game already got some flak before it launched because it was an obvious DayZ clone and an attempt to cash in on that formula's success. It also just copy and pasted the League of Legends terms of use without bothering to tailor it to their product.
Well now the game is out and the shit storm is getting worse. First are the accusations of fraud and false advertisement. Here's a nice pic courtesy of reddit that points out the BS (this pic is backed the numerous angry threads on the game's forums).. However those threads on the steam forum are going poof because the devs are hard at work banning people and deleting threads that point out the game's terrible flaws. But here's the fun part. Now that the game has somehow skyrocketed to the top of Steam's Top Seller list, a patch was released. A patch that increased the character respawn time from 1 hour to four (4). You have five character slots, so before the one hour respawn was no big deal since you could cycle to another character. Not only is a four hour respawn absurd, they added a respawn button so you can respawn instantly if you pay real money (yeah, this game has microtransactions despite having a $15 entry fee). Oh and you have to accept the ToS before you can play, and that means agreeing to no refunds. Anyway, I made this thread for two reasons. First, to rant about the stupidity of the people buying this game without doing and research, just because "zomg it's a game like DayZ and since it's a game I pay for and not a mod it must clearly be good and amazing." And second, to server as a PSA for anyone thinking about buying this game. Don't. These devs don't deserve your money. It doesn't matter if a 50 player deathmatch with harmless zombies sprinkled in for flavor sounds like fun to you. The people behind this game shouldn't be rewarded for their abhorrent practices. Edit- Icing on the cake: Sergey Titov, the executive producer behind WarZ, is the same man responsible for bringing us Big Rigs: Over the Roar Racing or the worst piece of shit in gaming history. |
sadly i almost bought this game just cause at a surface it looked like it catered to the type of game i always wanted to play, which is kinda like a "No structure survival zombie sandbox".
But from what i understand, this is just a Sandbox FPS with zombie bots on the map and scarce ammo. I was even excited about the idea that you could spawn barriers and barricades and sorta fortify your own settlement... but from videos around and seeing conversations, all you really do is spawn a obstacle to hold off the zombies a bit... I didn't know about the respawn time, that is just ridiculous on multiple levels, real poor game design... specially since the game has spawnpoints, so a ill spirited camper can easily ruin a newcomer's game and make the game unfun in no time flat... |
It's a pretty successful smash and grab. I believe they had been making another game called War Inc., but after seeing the popularity of DayZ they reskinned it with zombies, changed the title a bit and bam, instant recognition. It's almost like those web games that advertise themselves as "Worlds of Lordcraft". They've probably made enough money in these two days to cover their costs, so now they can milk the cow for all it's worth until people stop confusing it with DayZ, at which point they'll undoubtedly shut down the game and crack open a bottle of champage.

yeah i played War Inc, it's not very good... like, at all. It is still around though, and it's free...

You wanna know what really pisses me off?
Fuck Valve. Their Greenlight horseshit is keeping good games from good creators from getting the exposure they deserve, their place instead being filled by shit like this. |

Also some fun facts about WarZ I learned from watching TB's video: -Sliding down a slope will give you fall damage. -The animations are hilariously bad. -Anything you buy with microtransactions you lose on death. -You can't swim. |
Valve decided that quality check meant totally needless $100 entry fee just to have people vote on whether or not you get to be on Steam.
Which really is just a fucking gross way of gatekeeping to make sure none of the poors get in. EDIT: Apparently War Z didn't even have a Greenlight phase. It got a free pass onto Steam. FUUUUCK YOOOOU VAAAAALVE |
a lot of poor game developers running around publishing their games these days...?
you also don't want to Steam to turn into the Google Android store with brickloads of spamware and poor games... there is little quality control there as well, people just tend to expect more from Valve... which is inching closer and closer to a "big budget" version of the OUYA. Just check the "most downloaded" apps on the android store... piles and piles of "top games" with tons of bad reviews that hit the fan as soon as the game gains enough popularity to break into the view of the general larger public, multiple games with functionality mistakes, errors, bugs, pay to win... you name it, it has it. Don't even get me started on clones... I can understand their entry fee... it makes sense business-wise. That's not the problem, not in the very least, not even in the most twisted sense of the word. The only problem if that quality control gets relegated to second banana, they tried to replace the role of people doing quality control and testing builds of candidates for greenlight for an Entry Fee and Public voting... of course it's going to have problems! So, really, if they improve on THAT aspect, it would be a lot better... but i'm first to look at the game developer than the game's publisher to discuss a game's faults and errors... and WarZ seems so far just a lamely done DayZ clone. Here is the thing though... people will rage, cause raging is easy and fun, the raging will produce attention, which will produce notoriety, which will produce curiosity, which will produce cash. That cash MAY be used to improve the game, or not... either way, talking about a bad game only gives it more power. Beating a bad game is pointless... if it sucks, don't play and don't talk about it... talk about better games instead. That's the only way to not give money to developers that don't earn it and give it to those that do. |

EDIT: Is it really so hard to believe that people make games who aren't filthy rich? Christ. The AAA scene has poisoned your minds. |

Or perhaps the publisher just made enough money from suckers beforehand to do the regular Steam licensing stuff, I don't know. Zombie games draw people like flies to corpses these days. |
