How the Hell do I turn off Anti-Aliasing in Photoshop 7 PERMANENTLY?!

There are check boxes to turn it off for some tools, but I want to get rid of anti-aliasing forever, I don't want Photoshop to apply it to anything I do.

I hate the default anti-Aliasing function, it screws up every single thing I do, and I'm getting sick and tired of pasting stuff into MSPaint just to resize it and not make it blurry around the edges in the process.

I don't care if I have to dig into the code of Photoshop and alter it, I just want anti-aliasing gone forever.

what's anti-aliasing?

Hamelin 06-05-2004 04:28 PM

Well, thanks for that helpful input.

What anti-aliasing attempts to do is, using mathematics, fill in some of the digital system with colors that are in-between the two adjoining colors. For example, with my heart image, it added in colors between red and white to smooth it out. When enlarging things like photos this isn't a big deal, but when you're working with things with very defined edges (such as sprites) it causes it to get quite blurry, like the colors are bleeding together.

i don't know for sure, but i think you can set Anti-Aliasing to off by default. there is no way to get rid of it permanetly (without rewriting the code), but it can be turned off.

Try going to "options", then blame me if it doesn't work.

Hamelin 06-05-2004 10:34 PM

snuj, that's all well and good, but how do you turn it off by default?

Dragonsbane, it seems pretty clear that you a) don't use Photoshop or b) have no idea what you are talking about. Oh, or both.

With that in mind, why are you posting?

Hamelin, the anti-alias feature of text is obvious enough, but I realize that's not at all what you need. I've been looking around in the help files as well as the various menus myself, only to find nothing. I suppose I am lucky that I do not do much or any pixel art. I hope someone finds you an answer, as I am curious; however, it would appear, so far, there is no option of this overall.

All I found via f1:

Quote:

The Anti-alias PostScript option removes jagged edges from a pasted or placed selection by making a subtle transition between the edges of the selection and its surrounding pixels. Turning off this option produces a hard-edged transition between pixels--and therefore the appearance of jagged edges--when vector artwork is rasterized.

Note: In Photoshop, you can deselect the Anti-alias option when you open or place a PDF or EPS file.

To turn off the Anti-alias PostScript option:
Do one of the following:
In Windows or Mac OS 9.x, choose Edit > Preferences > General.
In Mac OS X, choose ImageReady > Preferences > General.
Deselect Anti-alias PostScript. Clearing this option can decrease the time it takes to import the file.
Hope that helps?

That applies to importing the two filetypes listed. As it reads.
I came across that, as well.

If it actually works for all Photoshop features other than importing those kinds of files, I'd be surprised. Not to mention annoyed with their help files.

Are you looking for options that affect 'Smoothing' as well, Hamelin? I haven't used PSP7, but in The GIMP, on the Transform tool (which is what I use to enlarge selections), there is a checkbox for 'Smoothing', and when checked, it does anti-aliasing, but when it's not, it enlarges without anti-aliasing. Maybe its something like that?

Hopefully this is helpful, and this is just one of those 'Duh!' moments, or something.
