N64 Appreciation Station
I just dug out my old N64 and I've decided I enjoy playing it more then my PS2 or computer. I don't know why, but Mario 64, Star Fox 64, LoZ: OoT, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are just more fun then the other games I own.
Mario 64 is the best 3D platformer ever released. The graphics may not be the best, but it's still just as fun as I remember it. All of the moves feel natural and look good. I just can run around outside of the castle and have more fun then I did playing Jak 2. Star Fox 64 is just fun. Flying around blasting stuff is done perfectly in this game. Everything from the Independance Day level to the final area fighting a scary floating brain is pure bliss. Legend of Zelda: OoT should require no explination. It's the best of the Zelda games and one of the finest games ever released. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are great shooter games. I don't like console FPS' because I can never ajust to the controls, but for some reason, these two games just feel natural. I can barely move in Halo, but I can deathmatch just fine in Goldeneye. Speaking of deathmatches, the multiplayer in these games is still fun. The facility is the perfect deathmatch area, with just the right amount of hiding places, long hallways, and open rooms. The N64 may have suffered under the burden of too many crappy platformers and not enough good RPGs, but it still has a place in my heart. If you have a N64 take it out and replay some of your old games. You could even go buy some as they cost all of five bucks at EB games. |
Actually, when I went home after the semester was over, my sister and I spent large amounts of time playing Mario Kart 64 and Donkey Kong 64.
N64 really did suffer not from quality, but lack of quantity. There were several must have games for the N64 but after you had (or your friends had) them, the rest was mediocre to horrendous. I had very little luck finding games that were less talked about but still above average. I never found a title like Disgaea or Breath of Fire: DQ that didn't have the hype but still was good. |
There are a few, like Blast Corps and Pilotwings 64, that are pretty good but got lost in all the really crappy launch titles.
Donkey Kong 64 made me so mad because I couldn't beat the DK arcade game and get the last key. |
Yeah, i used to play my N64 alot but now the joysticks are really loose so it started to annoy the hell out of me. I think my favorite games were Jet force Gemini and Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. LoZ:MM never got the respect it deserved, sure it was a little...weird but still. And of course Starfox was in there alot and so was super smash brothers

How Ironic. I just blew the dust off of my N64 to play some Mario Tennis, and played a little Perfect Dark, (How was I able to defeat those HardSims so easily before?), but I had to dust off the classic and a half, and that would be the bomberman series. God how I loved to relive the memories of beating the pulp out of regulus, then saving planet Bomber from certain destruction, and then finding out my friend was a giant backstabber, so I ended up having to beat the crap out of him, in which point Regulus comes to save me rear end, only to tell me that he will kill me one day. (Thanks for nothing!)
Then there was the game where I picked up the egg, only to find a strange lifeform that would get me back my firestone and I would again save the universe from certain destruction while I beat up all the Elemental knights, Including Bulzeeb! (I mean Regulus.) The best part though? Getting Mini Black Mage! Schweet. (sighs) Ah... good times this system... Good... times... |
I remember the many hours of fun played with those titles mentioned. The funny thing about it is that i never actually owned a 64 of my own, but did own OoT just becuase I loved to play it. And the fun times playing goldeneye, though i preferred the library more. And let us not forget perfect dark, damn that kaze sim. I remember afectionately nicknaming it bastard sim, hehe. Good times, fond memories.

.....great. My next of the 'Downplayed 'X' System' threads was going to be N64. Looks like I'll have to go for another system next while this one is going on.
But I think the N64 was an amazing system. Dispite having Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, known as some of the bestgames ever, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis and Goldeneye are some of the best Multi-Player games I have ever played (and also had just as much single player value). I've played Goldeneye I think in single player form more than any other game except for Smash Bros Melee and CvsSNK2. |
Yes, I do agree that the N64 had a lack of RPG's. But it does have one of the best. Paper Mario is an awsome game, I play it often, still trying to beat the final boss. He's so annoying. But anyway, I didn't need to take my N64 back out, it never left my desk.

Paper Mario was good.
Two games I've been interested in picking up were Hybrid Heaven, and Ogre Battle 64. How were those titles? |
Ogre Battle 64, I rented several times, and I think I'll just go to Blockbuster and keep it next time. It was boring at times, but the storyline kept me going although I did get the worst ending. This goes along the line of Atlus not releasing enough of their games at a time, and me being too stupid to buy it when I saw it.
Paper Mario was fun, but I still like Legend of the Seven Stars better. That could be because I've played the latter 50 times, but that's just me. Yeah.... |
