So after 13 years...EVE is going F2P

I will let the following links explain things but this seems like the model WoW and Everquest II uses now.

It sounds tentatively good and works but could use tweaking.

My understanding of EVE is that its like, the MMO version of banking fraud/embezzlement?

My understanding of EVE is that it's the perfect MMO where you not only can be a total scumbag but it is actively endorsed.

You can do that but why would you want too for the fraud?

Yes you can be a total scumbag but I prefer to do it with weapons rather than scamming people. I like working for my kills as well as assholery.

Eve is the kind of game where I'm glad that it exists, but I'd never actually play.

Just curious why are you glad it exists?

I like the idea of EVE. The concept of a real Sci-Fi Space MMO that has cool ship designs, actual political intrigue via the corporations, digital real-estate that can be claimed by players via space stations, and especially the idea that even if you spend buttloads of real-world money to get ahead, all of that tech you buy is subject to obliteration at the hands of your enemies. It makes players who want to spend big put their money on the line with little in the way of protections afforded by the developers. I love reading about the epic space battles that take place in EVE, especially when hundreds of thousands of dollars are summarily wiped out of existence in the rubble.

But that said, it's not a game I would ever play. I don't have the time to devote to it or the money to make up for my lack of time. It's definitely a game that feels like a spectator sport to me. The grinding alone would be a real killer, especially in a heartless void full of space predators.

Yeah EVE has the best stories, of betrayal and war and corporate espionage, made even greater by the fact it's ALL player driven, but the gameplay itself is a boring, confusing, bloated mess of flowcharts and stats that requires way too much time to invest in. Which is why I tried once upon a time to get into the universe via the much more familiar medium of fps in Dust 514.

Sadly the updates were so damn slow in making any real progress towards their promise of a shared, intricately laced universe that I eventually gave up. And now even that's apparently shutdown anyway. Shame really, I had a decently leveled character and like 200mil isk in my personal funds.

Pretty much what Hawk and Tev said. I've read a few posts on reddit where people have explained inflitrations, sabotage, and subterfuge that took mulitple IRL years to play out and it just kind of leaves me slack-jawed.

That nails down exactly how I feel about EVE all in one sentence.
