discuss.

Sounds to me like Nintendo doesn't have anything really done yet, and is just starting up the hype early so they don't fall behind in the "We are working on a newer, better system" Rumor War. PS2 announced a long time back a "Revolutionary" new system that would work with interconnected CPU's or something strange like that using "Cell" technology. Nintendo's Gamecube, while holding it's own, isn't faring as well as the PS2 and the X-Box, so they need something to "Show" that they are still in the game and dedicated to gaming.

Personally, I'm not liking the new direction of Nintendo so much. The whole "Connect your Game Boy Advance to your Gamecube" is overrated in my book, the DS looks interesting, but not like anything that will draw me away from my Game Boy Advanced, and they still seemed determined to not throw in with the online route, which while I don't like or play any online games, they ARE a good money maker, and Nintendo is missing out by saying no to it.

I think Nintendo is once again making a giant leap for gaming kind...but they may have gone just a tad overboard this time. First of all, it was probably a bad idea not to seek online support for Revolution...yet they have still done something for DS. DS has Wi-Fi...and that's something that hasn't yet been done in any console yet. Theoretically, you could play online multiplyer with DS, and not need to hook up to anything...that is a great idea. I also think the DS is an ambitious piece of equipment, it was just not represented well enough as it should have been at the time of E3. Hopefully, they'll have something better to show soon. As for Revolution...whose to say whether it's good or bad? Since we know almost nothing about it, we should assume nothing.

However, with so much revolutionary designs being implemented...do the gamers really want it? Well, if I can IM my friends with my DS...then HELL YEAH I DO! Others may not...only time will tell.

now wait a minute

wi-fi?? i guess its wireless multiplayer , which will be a much appreciated effort after the new wireless adaptors come out with FireRed and LeafGreen. but how big of an area are u able to use it with to talk and do other things with other people? a football stadium area, which even i know is besically impossible i think to do, or maybe a city block or 2. it sounds good but it might be 2 good to be true

This came directly from Game Informer's most recent issue, which covered E3, and more important to this discussion...the DS.

Quote:

"In keeping with the company's 'connectivity' initiative, the unit[the DS] also has built in wireless gaming and messaging capabilities. Playerws will be able to use a proprietary short-distance (30-100) feet connection to assemble up to 16 players, or the built in Wi-Fi, which will theoretically allow you to play people acress the country or - the world."
And with titles like Mario Kart DS and Metriod Prime: Hunters, due out for the DS at launch, the potential is there for world-wide DS gaming. Nintendo is also making Pictochat, which is basically a combination of the palm-pilot's grafitti pad, as well as a touch-screen keyboard for instant messaging purposes.

Garland89 06-24-2004 02:32 PM

so basically

as long as there is someone in the immediate area of you, u always have someone to play with,.... BUT WHAT IF THERE ISNT!!!!!.. btw how big is 30-100 ft? thats like 2 or 3 houses isnt it?

Wolf99x 06-24-2004 02:35 PM

I'm really sorry about this...but some people just can't read the whole quote.

Quote:

...or the built in Wi-Fi, which will theoretically allow you to play people acress the country or - the world
That's what happens if there isn't. Geez.

Garland89 06-24-2004 02:38 PM

SORRY!!!!!!!!! i guess thats what happens when u read and pay attention only half of the time, ill try not to let that happen again, but that sounds awesome

I've allways stuck by nintendo, but I'm starting to lose faith. Everything they've done has been really gimmicky, and they're never going to be as succesfull as Sony and Microsoft if they don't get some online support. They think that it's not where the community is going (or something like that) but when so many people are clammoring for online play, how can they deny that that's where the community is going.

All I can say is that if Nintendo doesn't actually revolutionize the console buisness (and I don't mean any lame Virtual Boy) then I'll probably be buying a PS3 (that's not to say that I won't buy the Nintendo console, but I'll probably wait for the inevitable hundred and fifty dollar price drop).

Wolf99x 06-24-2004 02:44 PM

I'm buying all the next consoles anyways. Why be limited?

But as to gimmicky...granted the GBA-GCN connectivity thing was a poor idea, but it paved the way for the DS. Also, Nintendo has indeed repeatedly stated they don't really have plans to do online gaming...I highly doubt this mindset will last after what I read in the GI issue on their E3 coverage. (I suggest anyone who reads this topic should get that issue, it's a great one.)
