Freaky Games
I was just checking out some older games (SNES games NES games), just so I could make fun of the bad translation or whatever, when I stumbled upon "ClockTower" for the SNES. Usually, I don't play freaky games at night when I'm all alone, (I have an overactive imagination and I scare easily ^^;; ) But I decided to play ClockTower anyway, thinking "It's an SNES game, how scary could it be?" But man, That was a freaky game.
At first I was annoyed by her slow walking pace (I didn't figure out how to make her run until later, and now I can't stop her from running) and didn't expect much out of it, but before long, I was jumping at the slightest sound (there's hardly any music in the game besides creapy sound effects, the music only starts when you're in panic mode) And you don't have the slight comforting feeling that you have in Resident Evil by carrying around loads of ammo and weapons to protect yourself with, you're a regular 14 year old girl, with no weapons, so she must run and hide for her life. (that's what makes it Survival-Horror Genre) It started getting freaky when the lights turned out in the game, but then I made the mistake of making my character go into the bathroom and open the showercurtain. There my character's friend was hung and all tortured (they make good use of actual pictures and such rather than sprites at times like these) then the Scissorman (a creapy child who stalks your character with giant scissor things) comes out and is chasing me and I get away from him, but then I keep running into him. And I was making my character rest (her stamina was low) when I heard the *snip snip* of the scissorman coming. I still haven't beat it though. Appearantly later in the game, you can see your other friends being killed, some starving guy in the celler will try to eat you if you don't have meat, and there's even 9 different endings to get, but not all of them are happy endings. *shiver* So what scary/horror games have you guys played? |
I think the scariest game I’ve ever played was this aliens mod for Doom. For the first 30min to an hour of the game you see no aliens whatsoever. All you do is keep heading downward, deeper into the base. At first the base looks normal but then it gradually becomes alienified the farther down you go. And there’s no music, only creepy sound effects. You look around the base and you see that carnage has unfolded and you think to yourself, wtf is going on. Eventually your jumping at the slightest shadow. I remember this one time I unloaded an entire clip into blackness because I heard an alien sound effect. Nothing was there, but I sure killed that wall good!

Haha, I played that ClockTower game for the SNES too... Didnt get vary far in it because I couldnt figure out any of it and couldnt figure out a way to get away from the kid.
The later ClockTower games are better... more violent and hes not a kid. :D |

A-Run out of the bathroom, then run to the room on the right where the master bedroom is (with the parrot) and hide under the left bed (but you HAVE to have taken care of the parrot before hand by using the sheets from the other bed) B-Run out of the bathroom, then run left and up the stairs until you get to the closet, then get in the closet and as you're climbing up the cupboards tap the panic button frantically until she gets up there, then the ScissorMan will leave eventually. Those are the two ways I hear work, there's more, but I don't know how well they work. |
I havn't really played any horror games lately, but I've had some pretty scary moments while playing Halo at a LAN party.
One such occasion was at the Blood Gulch map. I was sniping at the opposing base when I had to reload my clip. While reloading, I looked up and saw a rocket two inches from my face. I don't know what made me jump more, the realization of the rocket about to collide with my head or the resulting explosion. |
Silent Hill 2 definately falls under a freaky game. It's a slower game, so some people hate it because it's not Resident Evil *bang bang bang* every 2 minutes, but it's got a strong story and one really odd ending. (Out of like 4)
*SPOILER!* *SPOILER!* *SPOILER* The one of which I speak is the one where he drives off into the lake because he loves his now dead wife. Spoiler end! |
The original Alone in the Dark. I never new a crappy old game could scare the shit out of me like that game could. The graphics are horrible, but there are some genuinely scary moments regardless. Case in point, the monsters aren't scary, but events are. You start in the attic of a mansion and have to work your way down while dealing with zombies and wererat things (Maybe they are supposed to be werewolves, I don't know). It was really late at night, and I had made it to the front door of the house, and your goal is to escape. Well, stupid me, I went, "Glee, escape, that was short!" I walked up to the front door, opened it, and showed it was some sort of vortex. I had my guy turn and run, but after a second he flies off and is hurdled into the abyss with a horrible scream. Let me tell you, when the room is dark, it's midnight, and the game hasn't made a sound for a long time and that event happens, you decide that's it for the night...

Silent Hill 2 was boring as hell. I would have stopped in the first half-hour if not my Brother was practically begging for me to play it (It's like, his favorite game).
Resident Evil is my favorite, for sure. There's enemys everywhere and you always have to keep an eye on your ammo and health. You have to decide which enemys to kill and which one's not to. You also get that "I might die here" feeling which is pretty non-existent in Silent Hill games, since you can run past 80% of the enemies with ease. Not to mention, if you use a melee weapon correctly, you never have to use a gun again, making the enemys pretty helpless. Lastly, in Silent Hill i can go into any boss battle with the invincible knowlege that I can retry as much as I want untill I beat him. But hey, it's all about prefrence. For me, it takes more than just darkness and music to make me fear for my life, but being surronded by enemies and constantly worried about my health and ammo that get's me pumped. If you were sacrifice good gameplay for a better story, then more power to ya. But I'd pick RE any day of the week. |
I just don't RE as being as scary as other games. If anything it's more annoying. I.E. in RE:Code Veronica when I made it up to the Tyrant fight on the plane. I didn't have enough fire power left to beat him (On harder difficulty levels he'll jam the hatch so you can't knock him out. I believe the strategy guide said 128 handgun rounds or its equivalent.) That's my opinion, although RE 4 looks to be hella scary and hella cool at the same time.
Freaky Game moment. When I first played Clock Tower 3 and the guy with Chainsaws popped out. I never got far in that game though I hated the hide and seek gameplay. |
I've had Siren in my drawer for about a week and a half now. I don't know if this counts because I can't bring myself to play it for more than five minutes. The very first enemy freaks me out too much. I know I'm supposed to get away from him somehow, but there's nowhere to run. (And his little "Shoot to kill!" comments aren't helping, either.)
