Warcraft 3 problem

Ok I've posted this question on several different forums, but nobody there's really helped (and on one, my post has been deleted! >.<)
I've installed Warcraft 3, and when I run it, I can watch the intro movie, but after that all I get is a black screen with my mouse pointer on it.
Since I'm running it in window mode (after someone suggested I try that) I can at least do ctrl+alt+del and close the program, but I've no idea what to try now.
I've got the latest DirectX and nVidia drivers, and my computer is WAY above the minimum requirements.
System Specs:
AMD Duron 700mHz processor
320MB RAM
GeForce 4 MX 440 64MB
Windows 98

My brother installed it on his computer and it runs pretty fine
Brother's system specs:
Pentium III 450mHz
280MB RAM
ATI Rage Pro 8MB
Windows 98

Has anyone else had this problem? Any help would be much appreciated.

Try reinstalling it.

But really, I have no idea what the problem is.

Though, how do you get WC3 in window mode?

That sounds like a problem I once had with Might and Magic VII.

Your problem really could be a bad CD. Or installation errors. Or, and the most likely (because you're experiencing the EXACT same thing), it could be that your computer itself has some wrong with it's components. When that happened to me, my old computer went bye bye within a matter of months.

Run some virus scans, check the system specs manually. Make sure everything is workign correctly. (You also can't change around DirectX, since doing say may screw up your computer)

After you do, delete the game, reinstall it, and try again.

Edit: Or it could be the wrong graphics card, however I doubt that since you can view the intro movie.

I'm also curious on how to get Warcraft 3 into windowed mode.

Tobias: Did you read his specs? I think his graphcis card is very alright, since I had Warcraft 3 running fine on my old GeForce 3.

For a Mac it's Command M, I'd expect on a PC it's Alt or Control M

heres how

heres how you can run warcraft 3 in window mode. I just fooled around with the .exe after reading this thread and am not responsible if it not runs on your computer or screws up the installation

:D just kidding

heres whatya do in the shortcut to War3.exe

-Right click the shortcut.
-Click " Properties ".
-where it says "D:\Program Files\Warcraft III\Frozen Throne.exe"
-your gonna type this at the end "-windowed"
-it must look like this " "D:\Program Files\Warcraft III\Frozen Throne.exe"-windowed "
-click " Apply "

-please notice that -windowed is outside of the original " " :D that should work

-I think this works for any game you wanna play in window mode
-if you want to go back to fullscreen just erase the " -windowed " part.

It actuallly could be your moniter. When I first got WC3 WAAAAAY back when I was using a replacement moniter cause my other had went bad. Because I never bothered to get the correct drivers for the moniter it would show a black screen with all resolutions higher than 680 by 480. Since WC3 STARTS on a higher resolution I had to borrow a moniter to fix this prob.

Stover 06-28-2004 12:21 PM

First of all, go get XP

If that doesn't work, it could be that your monitor's on its way out, and can't change the screen resolution.

So go buy a new monitor. And while you're there, get some RAM. I'm talking two or three 256meg sticks here.

The Hand of Sauron 06-28-2004 02:15 PM

Hmmm... I'll try get my monitor drivers.
My monitor is apparently a Daytek 1531-D monitor, but the thing is I always have to manually select the drivers, it'll never automatically find them when I point it to the driver file.
I could try borrow my brother's monitor, see if that works.
I'm also gonna try reinstall it in case it's a bad install or something.
And Stover, I WOULD go get XP, but I haven't got the money. I heard it's something like £200 for XP Pro, and £50 for XP Home, and I've not got that kind of money, unemployed as I am, though hopefully if I get the job I've applied for I'll be able to give my computer a much better upgrade.
I'll go try all this stuff, and I'll post back if any of it works.
Thanks for all the help :-D

EDIT
Urgh, nothing worked -_-
I've tried everything I can think of! Changing screen resolutions, colour depth, reinstalling the latest drivers, installing Frozen Throne, and now there's only one thing I can think of that MIGHT work.
I was considering disabling the GeForce card and enabling my on-board graphics instead. They're 8MB, so they should hopefully run the game. I'd rather find a way to play them on the GeForce though.

EDIT 2
Yay! It works!
I just downloaded DirectX 9.0a instead of 9.0b, as apparently 9b has some problems with certain games *shrugs*

KefkaTaran 06-29-2004 12:31 AM

Well congrats on getting it to work! Hope you enjoy the game, it's a good one.
