A suggestion
Hello i know i am new to this board but i am here by complete chance to make a suggestion about your Roleplay section. The current type of roleplay you are doing is called SIMMing which was the original type of roleplaying but to be honest with you it is old and out dated, you create your own world not based on any one thing, which at first is fun but over te years i have played a total of 35 SIMM's most of them got closed down because of lack of new recruits and older players leaving, the truth is these SIMM's are dieing out.
But I am here to attempt to be a messenger of a new type of RPG, A freeform Empire builder. This type of RPG is set in a world or universe that 1 player (refered to as the MOD) controls by keeping an eye on what people do. In SIMM's the person controling it rarely continues a plot for a person. But in Empire builders Mods are important, they decide crutial things like how much time it will take to research something or if you find a new planet at a certain square on a map (yes there is a map) the map decides where your empire is and where the planets around your empire are, and where your ships and other empires ships are. Also you dont write a story unless you are doing somekind of diplomatic event or a combat event between 2 fleets of spaceships or 2 armies of tribes on a planet. If you wish to update yourselves to be with the modern Roleplaying crowed then please respond with your comments and hopefully the Admins will listen and allow me permission to start a Freeform empire builder on this site |
You can do whatever you want to here, but the moderators of this forum probably won't upkeep a freeform thing. I doubt very highly that you or anyone else new would be given moderator status just to do so, as such it might result in being chaotic and that. I don't know how to go about bringing this reform, but what we have right now works for us anyways. If ya get bored with a story, you make a new one. Who cares if something is left unfinished? That's why you do new stuff.
What you are suggesting is also way complicated, and frankly mods don't have that kind of time or energy. So perhaps you could do a freeform empire builder whosit whatsit somewhere else, until people get bored with the story and make something new. |
no MOD is just the name I assign it is not an official place i would not get any power, i would run it all though cause it is my suggestion i dont expect anyone to run it for me

This is the problem that I see here. It feels to me like a self-glorified system in which you'd have the basic control of the entire roleplay. Thus tweaking things to your liking and not to suit the majority of the players. That's not how roleplaying should work. It sounds almost like a table-top roleplay, just not as enjoyable. The system would work a lot better in a chat room rather than a forum, with scripts for dice instead of having to accept the word of the GM who made the roll.
The current style may be, in your opinion, outdated, but it suits the way things work around here. It's a slow paced enviroment where people can take their time in replying. It's also about descriptive narrative and storytelling, which works well in a forum enviroment. It's almost as if you were writing a book from many perspectives. You don't need to roll a dice to make decisions about where to go or what to do, you just do it and build the storyline up around that. This idea of yours seems to limit the amount of involvement other players could have within the story. If it works well in other forums, then that's good - but it's not suited here at 8bit theater. It would mean too much work in keeping an eye on the fast paced threads and that's something I'm not willing to deal with. Also, making a new forum for this wouldn't be an option as the forums have been this way for as long as I can remember and everything is in perfect working order. I wish you luck elsewhere, but I'm afraid it's no beef with us modly types. |
ok that is wrong in the first statement, players make their events and ask an organizer (EG ME) to roll for the effect. Like you dont determin what the guy at the bar will say to you. You use luck and hope he says you can have another pint, the organizer just tells you what happens
|
That's just like having to ask for permission to breathe all the time. It also involves having to ask for a dice roll at a random time with no set definition of what needs to be rolled for. So it still stands that the GM would have almost complete control over what takes place due to the fact the circumstances are beyond the players control.

no you post what you want to happen Example
"Do you have need of a barkeeper," Objective Asking for a barkeeper job you effictivly tell the mods what you wish to happen then they roll a random interger to see if it happens or if a slightly better, worse version happens |
So each of your questions benefits a different outcome? Because if no questions are asked, there is no need for a GM in that instance. I'm failing to see how the call for a dice roll is worked out. Because as I see it, there are many circumstances in a roleplay that require a decision to be made, both internally and externally on the players part.

And if you decide against what they want to do, or "the dice roll badly" then they will lose interest quickly because nobody wants to have a cool idea and then get it shot down because of some dice roll or whatever. It would happen frequently enough that the RP wouldn't be any fun because you'd have to do something else all the time. Or even if it did go well, what then? "Okay you are a barkeeper for the next x posts" or whatever. It could end up even worse. In this "SIMM" roleplaying as you call it, there is a much greater allowance for freedom and creativity. Maybe we don't want that kind of structure.
Either way, it seems like that kind of RP is best left to tabletops and character sheets. |
This seems like a mod/suggester kind of thread, but, uh, why not open a thread in the roleplaying forum and explain the rules for a particular RP. Then you can be mod and everything can be peachy and upgraded etc...
? Or should I keep my nose out of this confusing situation |
