A misconception about fighter that I feel obliged to clear up now...
 

Judging from some of the threads that have been started, and some of the answers in those threads, some people think that Figther is stupid.

Well, Fighter is actually smart, very smart.

Brian has mentioned it many a times, and there are comics in those archives to back it up, Fighter is smart.

So, to that 'Why is Fighter so stupid' thread, the only real answer is 'hes not!'

(appologies if this was brought up recently, but from what i scanned through in the threads it wasn't mentioned how smart Fighter really is)

He's just naive. Really really naive.

Actually, Fighter may be smarter than we think. Black Mage worries about gaining power and winning White Mage's heart (fat chance of that), Red Mage is obsessed with min-maxing his way to victory, Thief is the compulsive kleptomaniac who must worry about Elfland.

Fighter, however, doesn't even think about stuff like that! In a world where everyone is burdened with agonizing decisions about the future, Fighter just sits back and lets it go by. He lets everyone else take care of the boring mental business while he gets to focus on what is really important to him - swords.

And to think we call him stupid.

He IS stupid. Remember, ignorance is bliss. He is merely so stupid that his intelligence is a negative number, which has upset the game engine and caused his intelligence score to reverse itself. This explains why he can speak (other than because if he couldn't speak, he couldn't annoy black mage).

Fighter IS stupid. Yes, he is incredibly naive. But he is naive repeatedly about the same incidents. This means he is unable to learn from past experiences/mistakes, which is stupidity.

He is just to stupid to relize that everybody is burdened (including himself).

The more I read of Fighter, the more I come to think that he's not so much stupid as simple, like Carrot in "Guards! Guards!" was simple. He is, as BM himself observed, very uncomplicated and he has an uncomplicated view of the world. Which makes me take another look at his view of Black Mage... The other LWs think that Fighter doesn't really listen to Black Mage, yet nobody really listens to Fighter.

Just thinkin' out loud...... (figuratively :rolleyes: )

he may be overly nice and courteous

and hes definatley very simple

but Fighter is NOT NOT stupid! hes smart! Case in point, look at when the LWs were caught in the spider web, was Fighter the last one out? No!

Hes smart, and if I was not overly lazy I could pull up comics to prove it!

he is negligent.

He has yet so far been successful against anything and everything he has come against, so it shows he is at least intelligent (or perhaps just lucky) enough to react to things that directly affect him. I would have to say, he doesn't let on enough to prove his intelligence one way or another, but I would have to say he is at least as intelligent as the rest of the group.

I agree, he is not significantly stupider than the other light warriors, but the statement "Fighter is actually smart, very smart" is just obviously false. There is no member of the light warriors who has not been stupid on numerous occasions, with the possible exception of thief. However, most are smart, or at least logical, more often than fighter. Because fighter is potrayed as being so stupid, his rare moments of intelligence are a huge suprise so we remember them well. However, overall, I still think he is probably the stupidest of the light warriors, unless you are counting black belt, but he has had a couple of smart moments as well.

All the other major light warrior characters have some general, constant sign of inteligence. For red mage, there is the DnD mastery. For Black Mage there is the evil cunning and the accurate insults of when the others are acting really stupid. Thief has his ability to con everybody around him of all their money/goods. Fighter's general state is stupidity/naivity, he just has had some occasionaly flashes of brilliance, which were memorable only because of how suprising they were. These do not make up for his overall stupidity as his primary character trait. While these events put him more on a par with the other light warriors, they do not mean that he is smarter than they are, he is only comparitively less stupid.
