Your Opinion on Print Magazines (e.g. EGM, etc.)
What do you all think about print magazines dedicated to gaming? Unable to compete with the Internet? Stupid people running it?
I personally suscribe to EGM, Game Informer, and OPM (since they have a demo disk, they're a hella lot less biased than PSM, and I own a PS2). I'm just too lazy to scour the Internet looking for the latest gaming news, so I just wait till the next mag comes in and I'm semi-informed. I prefer EGM since its broader and has Hsu and Chan comics. Concerning the reviews, I don't look at them as the definite last word, more like a good friends reccomendation. If all three magazines say that a game sucks, I can take it that maybe its not all that hot, but if there are differing opinions I'll rent it and form my own opinion. So whats your take on them? |
I think that a magazine's review is a lot more reliable than a review on the internet that was written by some giddy fanboy. EGM has never failed me thus far, because they review games for all the consoles, and they're not biased towards either one. On the other hand, magazines like Nintendo Power and PSM give every game an ok score at the lowest, because they don't want to take business away from their respective companies. I think that it just comes down to which magazine you read.

PC Gamer. They've never steered me wrong.

I used to subscribe to PC Gamer, and I'm going to renew my subscription today. Been thinking about it lately.
But I subscribe to EGM. It's good and all, but you always get the console noobs! I just wish, even if they didn't cover PC games, they would TALK about them. They talk as if PC KotOR and Call of Duty don't exist! Even though they're a thousand times better. Feh. |
I subscribe to Gamepro. They usually just say "Look at this game." and that's when I go and find out about it by myself. I don't like PSM because they print shitty pictures. They made the preview for DMC3 look like ass.
If I want a good review, I go to www.game-revolution.com. Sometimes they fail me, like Driv3r, but other than that I trust them. |
I suscribe to Game Informer so I get the 10% discount on used games at gamestop stores.
I like reading the reviews, and since I'll prolly never play most of the games they go over, I don't really care if they're biased or not. They have good pictures. |
I get GamePro, mainly just to see what games are out. I used to get Nintendo Power as well, but eventually my subscription ran out, and I never got around to reordering it.

Here's an added reason: they're previews are very good. They make games I'd never play look interesting enough that I might get around to trying them someday. |
I get Nintendo Power and I used to get Game Informer (which I want to renew but can't find the ordering thing). Nintendo Power is all about Nintendo and raves on about Wind Waker when it wasn't a good game to begin with, and showed a 5-month special on SC2 only for Link's part. I prefer GI's word over a game.
Can someone tell me GI's address so I can resubscribe? Thanks. |
I get EGM and I like how they aren't biased toward anything. It just makes for a better gaming experience when you get good advice on which games to get and know which ones to avoid.
