Is X-box 32 bit?

And do bits really matter? I have some friends who I fell out with because tehy called me a fucking moron for insisting the Xbox was 32 bit. Unless i can somehow convince them by showing them these posts that I'm right, it's going to continue to be assheaded over fucking console stats.

So is it 32 bit?

The Mirror Emperor 07-30-2004 08:39 PM

Bits are the graphic quality, I think.
And for your question, no. I think it's 128 bits.

Wetflame 07-30-2004 08:41 PM

Are you a programmer and/or console expert =P No offense.

Bits are cetainly NOT the graphic quality, unless you're talkin' bits per pixel.

The Mirror Emperor 07-30-2004 08:53 PM

No and I don't plan to be.

I don't know bits nor do I care about them. Maybe you can find answers here:

I think the Mirror King is right, the Xbox is 128 bits. All the major consoles are. 2d playstation games were 32 bits. Don't worry, you're only off by a generation or so. But anyway, bits don't matter anymore, it's more about processer speed and stuff like that. Oh, and this was a really silly thing to drop your friends for. But you could have figured it out easily if you thought about it for a while. The N64 was 64 bits, and the consoles now look a hell of a lot better than that. So it's only common sence that the Xbox (the most powerfull of the three systems) would have to be waaaaay more than 32 bits.

Deathosaurus Wrecks 07-30-2004 09:59 PM

yeah, the 'bit speed' is how many chunks of data (binary) that the processors can...process at a time. if a processor can handle 128 bits of information per cycle instead of 32, then it can render more and finer polygons, thus producing more impressive graphics as well as faster runtimes altogether.

KefkaTaran 07-30-2004 11:22 PM

Indeed. Xbox is a FAR cry from 32 bit.

Wetflame 07-31-2004 05:31 AM

Or maybe bits are just a fancy thing to make it sound bigger?

The X-box is 32 bit. IT'S A PENTIUM 3. THE PENTIUM 3 IS 32-BIT.

Unless someone has conclusive evidence that the Xbox is 128 bit...

Quote:

64 MB of unified memory, which game developers can allocate to the central processing unit and graphics processing unit as needed (This arguably makes the Xbox more flexible for game designers.)

Processor: Modified Intel Pentium III
733 MHz
Maximum bus transfer rate of 6.4 GB per second
To be honest though, what difference does it make? Just because Athlon makes a 64-bit process which may or may not be in the next Xbox, doesn't mean you're going to need or see all that power...

A 32 bit processor is fine.

Wetflame 07-31-2004 07:31 AM

Yes! Excactly. 32 bits are fine. Bits != raw power.
