What game do you prefer?

What sort of game do you prefer?

Good Plot?
or
Good Graphics?
or
Good Gameplay?

Actually, I prefer gameplay to either of the above. A game can have crappy plot and crappy graphics and so long as it has great gameplay, it works for me.

For example, there was a game for the Tandy 1000 called Striker. Would be 6 bit graphics (somewhere between Atari and NES). Plotline: You control a helicopter. Go kill stuff. Gameplay: GREAT. Hence, I liked it.

I am with DVW in this case, but if I were to chose, I would take Plot.

Ninja Gaiden 2 didn't have amazing graphics on the NES, but the plot was awesome.

Plot is one of the most important aspects. The gameplay doesn't have to be the bestest ever but it has to be bearable and supported by a good plot. I.E. I could not sit through two minutes of gameplay similar to Superman 64 even if it had the plot of FF6, but it doesn't have to have Prince of Persia smooth controls and fighting ability if it has a good plot. Graphics are the lowest of the low. But I'd have to say the two biggest things are options, replayability and fun factor. Options: I like games like morrowind, KOTOR, and Star Ocean where I'm not being lead by the hand everywhere, don't always have to have the same teamates, and what not. Replayability: This mainly determines its buy or rent status similar to options its the "If I beat the game once will there be any point of still playing." And Fun Factor is self explanitory do I have fun while playing the game or do I feel like taking a sledge hammer to my face instead?

Good Gameplay > Good Graphics (because Graphics can improve or Hinder gameplay) > Characters > Story

Honestly, all things have to be pretty much really good for me to consider it to be a good game, but the most important element needs to be gameplay. A game can have the best story in the world, but if I don't have fun playing it, then its just a really good story with me playing a crappy game breaking it up to make it 20-50 hours long instead of 2-10 hours of just story.

It really depends on the gametype. Like, a game like DOAX, it's all about showing women in bikinis. So, graphics. Really, what's the plot of a game like that? Who care about simple gameplay? The game is about women in bikinis, and that's that.

Whereas with RPGs, plot is a major factor. Enough "some evil person wants to destroy the world we must stop them" plots! Dart from LOD was on a quest to find the person who killed his family, only to find his father still lives and is evil, because his father in inhabited by an evil man. Or in the case of LOL, your quest is to just stop the Mist; you don't know who's being it, what they're doing, or anything...you just want to stop the Mist. Only later do you find out there's more than there seems. Final Fantasy Tactics: You're a mercenary, and you find on of your former friends, so you want to find him and see what happened. Then you get dragged into a war. But from the start to the end of FF6, 7, 9, and 10, you knew one thing: "Someone evil wants to take over the world, so we have to stop her. Oh, wait, it's a guy. We must stop him."(this quote applies only to FF6, 7, and 9, though; not 10)

For action and fighting games, gameplay. I don't want some funked up controls that are hard to handle when I'm in the middle of a fight.
Colonel: "Raiden, press R2+L2 simulatenously, then while holding them down, press ad hold triangle, square, circle, and X for three seconds. During that time frame, press back on th D-pad and forward on the left analog stick at the same time, then press R3 and R1 at the same time. And that's how you move forward one step."
No, I want to go in there, kick ass, and look good kicking ass. Not look bad while getting my ass kicked.

Good plot is nice but Good gameplay is as well, I wouldnt want to have to go through horrible camera angles and movement problems just trying to figure out whats going to happen next.

The big thing that I look for in a game I can't really name. Perhaps you guys can help me find out exactly what it is called. For now, I'll call it IT.

So, what is IT? IT is the sheer speed and excitement when racing through the streets of Crazy Taxi. IT is the feeling of sheer amazement when pulling off your fist Uber Trick in SSX Tricky, yet still having that feeling the thousandth time. IT is blazing down the middle of Blood Gulch canyon in a Warthog jeep with the flag carrier for the winning score of a CTF match in Halo.

So...any ideas what IT would be called?

Otaku Son 08-01-2004 08:53 PM

IT sounds like an adrenaline rush.

h4x.m4g3 08-01-2004 08:54 PM

I'm thinking Fun Factor. It sounds like the pure feeling of fun and excitement you get everytime you play the game. So my best bet is Fun Factor (which I first heard from Gamepro). And Fun Factor is always the most important.
