Counter-Strike 1.6
Apparently Valve went bankrupt, so counter-strike and other half-life mods are now played through Steam (WON identification is gone, as well). Well, with the transfer over to Steam, they enforced an upgrade from counter-strike 1.5 to 1.6. And well, I'd just like to say, 1.6 is effin' terrible. Poor quality servers, near unreadable text, pixellated graphics (not that there's anything wrong with pixels in certain circumstances :p), even WORSE sounding voice communication, addition of newbie guns, nerfing of old guns, ah man.. the list goes on. Worst of all, they totally screwed up my old favorite map, Aztec. I also noticed that bullets land much more often now, even when your crosshair is not precisely on someone, making it much easier to kill people (and much easier to die).
What are the sentiments of the other CSers out there? |
First let me congratulate you on talking about a year old thingy. Steam has been out for about a year now (I think, it's nothing new) and I've heard the CS1.6 sucks, But CS1.5 Still works if you had the full version. I fooked up my steam by forgeting the e-mail I resistered with (Used a fake) and now it don't work :(

Also: Valve didn't go bankrupt. I dunno where you heard that info, but just the thought is ridiculous. Valve CREATED Steam. And it's a good system if they can learn to implement it right.

Windrift: Trust me, that's wrong. Valve didn't go bankrupt. Think of it this way: They made Half-Life and they released the MILLIONS of different incarnations of Half-Life. These guys are ROLLING in cash.
WON may have gone bankrupt. I believe WON was a seperate entity from Valve, and they no longer have an existing website, so that'd make sense. |

Steam is good. I don't know why people resist.
"Hmm, faster connections, integrated interface, auto-updating, and in-game messaging? No way! I'd like this crappy WON list instead." Steam > all. It had problems, and they're fixed. Besides, besides hte semi-cheap shield, not much is 'shitty.' But yeah it is year old news...WON was going to be gotten rid of for a very long time. I actually think you still might be able to play 1.5 through steam. Seem to remember my friends mentioning it. |

Something that does suck about Steam is the fact that so many people that bought a legit copy of half-life/CS can't use their CD key, and they have to go through a ton of hassle (and possibly expense) or simply buy a new copy just to play. Thankfully I did not have that problem. For anyone with this problem, go to Wal-Mart, they have the original half-life for $14. Everywhere else is selling that platinum crap that is $49.99 because it comes with a couple mods that are freeware. Quote:

I had the CD Key problem. Luckily for Valve, I guess, I'm some sort of Half-Life freak and didn't even feel bad dropping down $30 for the huge platinum pack. I just told myself it was a good way to get my HL collection reorganized before HL2 hits.
Only thing I honestly dislike about Steam is that you need to be online to play single-player HL. I mean it has an offline mode, but it's an annoying hassle to get to. But, since I don't do dial-up, that doesn't really affect me much. :P EDIT: Only places like Wal-Mart are selling the Plat. pack for $50. And only cause they're ridiculous. I got it for $30 online and I probably could've got it for less if I'd looked around a little more. |

Something else I completely forgot to address about 1.6. Aimbot is BACK!!!! UGH. Every other server I join has some idiot rotating in circles at 100mph, doing the helicopter. And if you observe them in first person their screen shakes like Mt. Saint Helens is exploding on their mousepad. Yet somehow they kill people behind walls, across the map, people they can't see, and all bullets go right towards the head. And they have the audacity to deny that they are hacking. If only I were some sort of universal admin... :bmage: |
