Now the tonsilectomy on the other hand, that one downed me for 10 days and I needed many-a-painkillers. |
Having your wisdom teeth pulled is nothing. Advice depends on who you are doing it:
Getting knocked all the way out: Obviously, have someone ready to drive you home. Be prepared to be laid up for a day or two. My sister got it done this way, and my mom had to check on her to make sure she wasn't choking on the blood. Just a shot and gas: This is nothing. This is how I got my teeth pulled. It would be best to have someone drive you home, because you are still a little dazed by the drugs and happy-gas (I love that stuff). The rest depends on the person. I was okay the same day, but used it as an excuse to slack off that day. I've seen other people take 3 days to recover. So it just depends. |
Okay, The surgery is the best part of the whole ordeal. If you black out, fine. you won't remember it.
But if you are awake, you'll be as happy as a clam. When I got my wisdom teeth taken out, I was literally singing "Sweet Caroline" by Niel Diamond as the Dentist was cutting through my gums. He had to tell me to shut up during the surgery. Afterwards is a bitch though. It isn't a matter of pain, so much as it is a matter of inconvenience. You are basically forced to lie down for a few hours afterwards, while you are totally awake and bored. Then you can't open your mouth wide and no one can understand what you say. Your mouth is still frozen, so you don't know what is what on your face. (I was picking at my goatee for hours thinking it was a piece of cotton that they forgot to remove from my mouth until I realized I was picking at my own facial hair.) You cannot eat anything good, and you end up getting cravings for foods that you would not normally want. Finally, it is the ugliest you will ever be in your life, as your face has a tendency to swell up. oh yeah, and the stitches are annoying too, but they eventually dissolve. |
Yeah I had mine taken out a few years a go. They knocked me out. It was quite funny, they asked me to count down from 100 so I thought it would take a while.
100...99...98...97...96...(out like a light) Woke up pretty groggy and definitely couldn't do anything for a day and a half. It was quite disguisting sitting in front of the TV, then having my sister coming into the room and proclaim, "ewww, you're drooling all over yourself." I had to actually touch my shirt to realize that yes I was actually drooling all over myself. Not a pretty picture. (although they do a much better job of portraying it.) |
No wisdom teeth pulling here, however, i have had five implants put in. sugery was a blast, the drugs they give you for that are great. the only bad part of that process is when one of the implants failed to mesh with the bone and the guy putting my caps on just pulled the whole thing (kind of like a long screw) out of my jaw.

I can't tell you anything about if it hurts or not, for the only times I've been to a dentist, it has been cause of a basic inspection. What I can tell you is that just ask for more gas.

They gave me an IV of something. I went from okay to feeling extremely drunk to passing out in the space of no fewer than 15 seconds. It was amazing.
I vaguely recalled something pulling on my teeth in the middle of the operation, when someone said "he's coming around, better increase it" and I was gone again. Next thing I remember, there were pieces of my teeth in front of me. You have to be very very careful afterwards. What what';s-his-face said about eating through a straw is incorrect - the sucking action can actually re-open the wounds in your tooth sockets, and make the healing and clotting take much, much longer. It's more practical to expect to be drinking tomato soup and eating jello and soft things for about 2 days, then slowly you can work back into harder foods if you are extremely cautious while chewing. The main point is DO NOT LET ANYTHING TOUCH THE SOCKETS. While it doesn't hurt, the clots are so fragile that it takes very little pressure to disengage them, restarting the bleeding and everything. |
Shineys right, once those clots are gone, you get a condition known as Dry Socket, and that does hurt like a bitch.
Chances are that they will perscribe some Ibeprophin, it's an extremely powerful painkiller. (but not a halucinagen... damn.) so you'll have to choke them down every day. Also, you will have chronic bad breath for a long time afterwards, seeing as you can't brush your teeth properly. |
If you've been following Ctrl-Alt-Delete lately, you should take Tim's advice, especially if a friend is playing Doom 3.
And yeah, the drugs are AWESOME. Try to draw it out as long as possible. |
