Another use for the XBox: Linux PC!

Behold the work of genius!

This is friggin' awesome! Admit it!

Okay, it's twisted and abusive, but I must admit I'm envious.

Lycanthrope 08-05-2004 04:05 PM

I bow to the genius of whoever thought this up.

OMG! OMG! They are such teh 1337 haXX0rs! Tehy can run LinuX on an XB0X. OMG OMG OMG WH3333!

Seriously, this ain't impressive. It just shows that there are a bunch of losers with too much free time out there, and who want to 'stick it to the man' (the man being MicroSoft) so much, that they install Linux. On a VIDEO GAME CONSOLE. That, and they still BOUGHT the thing, so they still gave money to the big MS. This is truely the epitome of pointlessness.

I say this only because I am curious -- I had thought people were already doing that to X-box "consoles" since groups started getting pre-released units before the nation-wide launch. Is it just that they finally have a "solid" method, or is this a new group or something? I didn't read enough of their page to see how long they've been doing this.

While I agree with most of your post, if they bought the X-Box and didn't buy any X-Box games, Microsoft is out a few hundred dollars (just because the console is sold for a fraction of its actual cost).

Did you ever think they didn't go "OMG LETS BE STUPID AND PUT LINUX ON XBOX" and instead said "Dude, we could do a lot more stuff if we ran linux on it." I mean seriously They might have had an actual reason for putting Linux on an X-box. Some people actually have reasons for doing this kind of stuff.

Edit: Some uses they say http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/faq.html#19

You see, this is where most people would decide to buy a computer instead of a gaming console. My point still stands, as it still is, in the end, really fuggin pointless, as it doesn't actually help with the purpose of the console, to play XBox games. It's just a bunch of hackers trying to seem all powerful and important, and offering a way to 'stick it to the big M$'.

And it's not that I don't like Linux either. I'm talking to you right now from a Linux computer. But really, doing that to an X-Box is totally pointless. It really is.

This is good for those who are eventually going to college and are computerless. Think about it. All you need is this and a TV, and you're set for both PCage and gamingy goodness.

So, nyeh!

Hmm, so, it's stupid/pointless that they are spending under two-hundred dollars for a fairly decent desktop workstation? Add a monitor and keyboard and mouse, and, oh noes, they have something good enough for programming, word processing, browsing the Internet, communication, and perhaps even decent enough for some PC/Linux games for something like 400 dollars. Sure, you could get other small desktop systems for about the same price or a little more, but it's still an economically decent choice.

I agree that it's a bit ridiculous, as there certainly does seem to be a certain amount of "omgayness I can screw with Microsoft stuff!!11shift!" However, it's not entirely devoid of sense.
