Now for something slightly different.

Theory: Why does the Conservative right latch onto Jesus Christ and parade him when he was obviously a hippy?

(please note partial absurdity of the question before destroying me)

You've been watching Bill Maher, haven't you? :p

Seriously, though I believe it has more to do with the Republican Party's cornerstone of voters: far right-wing Christian Evangalists and those who listen to them. Rather than any sincere religious piety. (Not that all Republicans aren't religious.)

I used to watch Politically In Correct but it got too Politically Correct.

And I had something else to add but it escapes me.

Eh, 'cause "they" (and I"m using 'they' because I don't parade him around) believe in him and people tend to evangelize what they believe in. You'll also notice that the Right's beliefs mostly stem from the Bible although there is no mention of stuff like abortion or gun control obviously. But gay couples can be found in the Bible, so can a lot of other stuff that I don't have time to list here since it's midnight and I gotta go to bed.

Obviously not all of the conservative right latches onto Jesus or religion. But goddamned can those religious ones be hardcore about it or what?

The religious Right also happilly ignores MANY inconsistencies found within the Good Book. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the Bible as a book that should be read to learn certain moral lessons, certainly... but I'm not a fan of interpreting it directly and strictly.

Jesus wasn't a hippy. He didn't do drugs and have free loving, even if he did Give Peace a Chance (and got crucified for it).

Bah, people flaunt their beliefs around as a desperate stab at gaining a sense of moral superiority. If people believe you have moral superiority, they'll let you get away with all sorts of shit.

Sadly it works in many cases.

a friend and i actually had this conversation while heading to a rave. albeit, we were so drunk we were screaming in the car because we couldn't hear eachother, but we both agree that JC would have been cool to kick it with.

think about it: the first miracle - wine! he was chillin at a party with a couple friends when they ran out of stuff to drink so he says "well, normaly i don't do this but get me some water. BAM! lets keep this party going" also remember the region they were in; gandja was a social thing and you gotta believe that the JC hit that hooka once or twice.

Peace out

they "flaunt" beliefs as a "desperate stab" and gaining a "Sense" of moral superiority?

Uhm... how'd you get that conclusion from what he said? How does: "they "flaunt" beliefs as a "desperate stab" and gaining a "Sense" of moral superiority?" mean he doesn't believe any set of morals is proper. I don't see any connection.
