Disgust at Square...

For canning a fan project.

http://www.opcoder.com/projects/chrono/

Just look at even a single screenshot of that! It's bloody amazing.

If they canned that, it's quite possible something nasty could happen to 8-Bit Theater! Don't let Square-Enix screw over the fans! Send an email to Square about how much you're disgusted at this.

This is the email I sent -

http://www.opcoder.com/projects/chrono/ - I must say I am disgusted by this. Fan-projects are the ultimate form of respect to a games company - they love the game so much they made their own take on it. Chrono Trigger is no longer being sold, and this is a different version of it that is not being sold, I fail to see why this is a problem.

I was one of Square's biggest fans - I always dreamed of designing monsters for Final Fantasy. Now I'm just extremely annoyed. I was buying a PS2 just for FFX. Now I have a strong urge to boycott all Sqaure-Enix products until this decision is reversed

It won't be long before this appears in games-magazines; it will greatly harm Square-Enix's reputation. I strongly suggest, as a fan and as someone who follows the games industry, to reverse this. This is plain outright disrespect towards your fans. This project would not have harmed your business - instead, if the project had been bought off them when it was finished, it would have been a great source of income for Square-Enix. The project had a big following and it would have sold well.

Instead, the decision was made to disrepect fans and loose money.

Please reconsider.

...grrr, bloody bastards. I was looking foward to Chrono Resurrection.

Where should emails be sent? Give me an address and I will whine.

Was never a chrono fan but those pics look awesome. The trailer is even cooler. Shit, I can't believe they tore this apart. Probably because they assumed that putting THAT much effort into this project, the creators would eventually seek to make profit or at least recover some funds they spent to make it. It's easier for a company like square to nip stuff like this in the bud rather than always keeping an eye out for pirates. Too bad.

You probably won't like me for saying this (the unpopular opinion), but I must.

As great as the Chrono Trigger Ressurection would be, it would be a nightmare for Squaresoft. If fan projects are released, I would definately take those instead of PS2 upcoming Square titles (because I'm still considering buying a PS2). I also wouldn't want to buy any products such as "Chrono Trigger" the cartridge, or "Final Fantasy Chronicles" as those would be a waste of my money. This gives competition for Squaresoft, using their own game! You are in a fan's shoes. But imagine being in a corporation's shoes. If I were Coca Cola, and people made an underground "Coca Cola X-treme $0.15 a bottle" then I would be pretty pissed. It would be harmful for my business. Sure people would still buy Coke from me, but much less often. Only when a "Coca Cola X-treme" is out of their way completely.

You have to look at this from a corporation point of view. You haven't been reading Square-Enix's financial papers, and you don't know what kind of a position they are in. They have actuaries telling them they need to get their ass in gear right this instant, and if something small like this Chrono Trigger Ressurection were to come out... it won't only lose Squaresoft millions of dollars revenue, but it will also inspire people to make OTHER Squaresoft ressurection titles!

Sorry I had to bring this light to you guys... I too am a big Chrono Trigger fan, and I too would have loved to play this. But this game is a plague for them.

By the way, 8-Bit Theater is not harmful in any way for Squaresoft. It won't inspire ressurections, however it will urge people to buy FF1. So I don't think they will ask Brian to dessist.

Well, think of it this way: The team says they'll be back soon with something new and different. Hopefully this means they'll start a new project with their own IP that will be something awesome, new, and fun, instead of a rehash of an old game. This isn't to say that a Chrono remake wouldn't be fun or anything, but I'm more interested in seeing what a group that seems to have really great potential can give us with something of their own creation.

Maybe they cancelled it because they've got a Chrono Trigger GBA remake in the works?

Maybe?

*Groan* That's the last thing we need.

I'll offer what I offer whenever something like this happens.

To fan-game makers: Keep the game, and just change all the names of the characters and locations. Allude to them (thats a non-lawbreaking Easter Egg), and give it a snazzier, uncopyrighted name. What you have now is completly unsueable.

Oh, and if Square had planned to shitcan 8-Bit Theatre, that would have been ages ago.

Personally Im pretty pissed at a lot of publishers because of how theyre sending these cease and desist letters around.

I think somewhere out there theres a law or something that states you CAN make fan games so long as theyre free. I think. Unsure.

Or it applies to some other aspect of fan-game making, I have no idea. I just wish that the people who made DBZ would crack down on THOSE fangames instead. Then we wouldnt be angry. We'd be happy. Yay. -.-
