Malware Problem

I need some help here. I seem to have some sort of spyware/virus called "Free Web Offer." I've tried deleting it, but it doesn't seem to work. The only real information I really have is in the screenshots linked above, and the fact that Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Norton AntiVirus don't detect it, although it sends pop-up ads and is a pest overall.

Here's my question: are there any tech-savvy users that can help me out?

Hijack This.

Try that... post a log of it here and someone might be able to help. Otherwise, go to a tech-forum somewhere and post it.

To find it, just do a google search. Or you could contact me on AIM. I have it and could send it to you if you can't find it.

I did a Google search on one of the filenames in your screenshot and managed to find some somewhat useful information. The spyware program that you're infected with appears to be known as "Ezula." I found a website for a program called Pest Patrol that claims to be able to remove it, but there's no free version available. I'll do a couple more searches and see what else I can turn up.

You could also try temporarily disabling your System Restore, then try deleting it. The re-enable System Restore. There are two disavanteges to this however, one is that you won't be able to restore to an earlier date than the day you re-enable system restore, and if you don't set up a new save point, you might not even be able to do that.

Do a PandaScan. I forget the website, but if you do a Google search, it's bound to come up. That site's amazing. It detects EVERYTHING! Plus, if it can't delete it, it will give you a link to information on how you can.

And once you get rid of it, stop using IE. Get FireFox or Mozilla instead (both found at www.mozilla.org

And if you weren't using IE, get FireFox anyway.

Oh GOD. I had Ezula before, that thing is such a friggin bitch...GRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Anyway, here is a site that can help you get rid of it.

Definitely switch to firefox. It's only very very slightly less functional than IE (as in, an extremely low amount of java or activex scripts won't run, in which case you can just open IE anyways) - I have had NO spyware since I switched over.

Well, I finally got rid of those files. Thanks for the help, guys!

Is Mozilla as good as Firefox? Or are they the same thing?

ChaosMage 09-19-2004 01:06 AM

Mozilla is made by the same company as Firefox, but the difference is that Firefox doesn't have all the unnecessary bells and whistles. Firefox is a pure browser, thats it. But you can download plugins for it that can do everything from remove images from web page displays (one of my favorites) to install a Tetris clone. Also, you say you got rid of the files Mr. Viewtiful. I would strongly recommend wiping all previous system restore points and making a new one if you have system restore enabled.
Also, my standard list of sugestions (some of which you've already done):
1) Download Spybot Search & Destroy: www.safer-networking.org
2) Download Ad-Aware: www.lavasoft.com
3) Zone Alarm: www.zonelabs.com (Zonelabs.org is a fake site)
4) Firefox: www.mozilla.org/firefox
5) A decent anti-virus package, such as Norton or McAfee (these are the only two I have experience with and so I can't really recommend any others).
6) Stop using Outlook. www.mozilla.org/thunderbird (incase you can't tell, I'm a big fan of their software)
Really, with this combination of 6 things you should be able to do just about anything without having a problem.

To add...
Mozilla is the open-source offshoot of Netscape's browser, components of which have since returned to Netscape's proprietary software.

Firefox, as just mentioned, is the browser-only software that has come out of Open Source Software development. Mozilla is essentially a package - browser, e-mail client, newsgroup access, IRC chat access (unless Chatzilla is separate from Mozilla), and possibly a few more things I've never paid attention to. Firefox is the browser element only, streamlined and, obiously, much smaller on your system.
