DDR the Arcade and PS2 game!

I'd play DDR whenever I could! And I really want to get the PS2 game as soon as I can. ^_^ Who else likes DDR?

RaiRai 09-24-2004 04:05 PM

If I could actually dance, I'd probably do so. But I have no co-ordination or rhythm. So I think I'll just watch other people.

Mr. Viewtiful 09-24-2004 05:01 PM

Go ahead and try it, Rai. I stink at dancing and Dance Dance Revolution, yet I have fun doing both. Just be sure to prectice up on a home copy of the game, since playing for the first time in arcades isn't a good idea if you dislike embarassment. Heck, I didn't actually learn rythm until I played DDR...

Cloud Strife 09-24-2004 05:19 PM

DDR! Totally sweet series. Almost no one had heard of it here, until I showed them. Now it's a craze!

ChaosMage 09-24-2004 05:37 PM

Congratulations, Cloud_Strife. You are a savior and geekifyer of towns. I sing praises of you.

Whats really funny is my ultra-conservative retard hick filled town is the only DDR place within 60 miles, the next closest one being in Indianapolis.

DragonDaimyo 09-24-2004 06:24 PM

DDR! YES! I have this game and I have loved every minute of having it. It's a great game and most of my friends like it too. Btw, I also have no coordination and still I love this game. My friend is insane at it. He can do the hardest songs at the hardest difficulty and still get a good score.

Also, for those of you who like the concept of DDR but have no foot-eye coordination, I recently ran into a PC game called Stepmania. It's a free game just like DDR, so if you do a Google search you can just download it. It's just like DDR except its for PC. Only catch is you have to get your own songs. But once you have them, it's great fun!

Romar 09-24-2004 07:34 PM

i have DDRMax and a dance pad for it me and my friend are getting really good at it really quick him and me can almost do every song on standard and god its hard but entertaining.

Living Bobbeh 09-25-2004 01:34 AM

Ack, DDR/DS. I hate this game. I love normal rythem games like Amplitude and Gitaroo man, but cannot stand DDR/DS.

Played it around my friends house for about 5 minutes and I was like "Where's the Pad?"
After getting my weapon of choise, I managed to combo through 3 songs.

(It's a shame they killed the Frequency/amplitude games after just 2)

reality_deviant 09-25-2004 12:42 PM

I love DDR. It's a great workout for normally more sedentary nerds, and it has these fun dance-y songs...yay.
I also like ParaParaParadise. Not as many song choices on that one by a long shot, but still a good time.
I have yet to sample Karaoke Revolution, but since I like karaoke, I'm sure I'll enjoy this game as well.

beinsane 09-25-2004 04:13 PM

I suck at DDR, but there's a machine in the micro-arcade in my college's micro-student-center, so there's usually no one there to watch me embarrass myself.

BlackMageGirl! 09-25-2004 06:04 PM

I LOVE DDR!! I'm not that good at it (only a 4 foot novice) but I love to play! Playing in the arcade is a lot better than at home because of the industrial steel pads that never break. My favorite version is DDR 7th mix.
These are the songs I normally play:
Nori nori noir
Candy (both versions)
.59
Burning heat!
Japan
Ethnic Exotic
B4 you

All on easy mode of course 'cause I suck at the harder ones.

Perhaps in the comfort of my own home. I was made to look a fool by a large male friend of mine a few months ago when we had a go on the arcade machine. He ended up being WAY better than I was, even managing to do it backward when I could barely put a foot right. I was so ashamed. ;_;

Lost in Time 09-26-2004 04:49 PM

Yeah.. at home is the only way that I will play it, I couldn't pull in enough courage to play it at the arcades. I should borrow my cousins mat so I could play it.

batgirl 09-26-2004 05:53 PM

DDR is awesome and I love it. I'm the Secretary of the DDR club at my college. A few helpful tips:

1-Although you don't want to get embarassed, the arcade is probably the best place to learn because the foam pads you get for home play slide around on the floor and mess you up further. The metal arcade pads offer no slippage so you can focus more on the beat.

2- An easy way to get coordinated with the song: there's always a little bit of an introduction before the arrows begin, so bounce up and down or shuffle your feet over the pad to the beat and you are now in sync with the song. As long as you don't go out of sync, most easy songs are yours to conquer.

3- The best way to progress is to pick a couple of songs and play them through a few times to get good at them. You'd be surprised at how much better you'll get at other songs once you've mastered one or two.

I myself am not the greatest DDR player (I can pretty much do most 6 and a couple of 7 footers) and I absolutely love it. Video games and a workout all in one. My favorite songs are:
Stomp to my Beat
Tsugaru
Twilight Zone
Whistle Song
Kakumei

EVILNess 09-26-2004 07:55 PM

DDR is probably one of the most, if not THE most, evil franchises out on the gaming market today. *shudder* Bad memories.

Mirai Gen 09-26-2004 09:52 PM

I usually play on standard, and I like .59, Stompin To My Beat, Whistle Song, Burnin Heat!, Kakumei, and Maxx Unlimited when I can put it on light. I need to play at a local arcade, I can definately attract a crowd considering I like to add unique flares to my songs.

Like, on the whistle song, I throw my arm up like in a cheer when it's up+down twice and make it look like I'm at a rave or something. Whenever it's a long hold and the song turns slightly quiet, i usually freeze in a wierd position. It's more fun that way. Adn plus you can play Light or Standard and look like a total pro.

Jagos 09-26-2004 10:48 PM

anyone who likes DDR, should look up Stepmania. That way you can play on your computer.

Other than that, I can't WAIT to play Drummania from the comfort of my own home...

TheHappyToaster 09-26-2004 11:33 PM

So, as a demi-video game store employee, I just thought it might bear noting that DDR Extreme just got released for PS2, and it actually incorporates the eye-toy in the process.

I haven't actually played it yet, as I am poor, but I'm told (by our local Sony distributor lady) that adding the eye-toy adds another set of arrows that gets taken care of by waving your hand over them on-screen.

I'm also assured that another 4 arrows, thus requiring full body movement, doesn't somehow make the game impossible.

Although, I'm frightened of the guy who can finish anything on heavy with the eye-toy adding on more arrows...

Amen. I have to drive at least 45 minutes to find a DDR machine. If you go to www.ddrfreak.com they have every location of every machine everywhere in the US, (or close to it) so maybe you could find one closer. ^^;;

But I love DDR and I've been playing it for several years now.

Living Bobbeh 09-27-2004 10:32 AM

Even tough Myself, hate the DDR games, I have two songs from it due to one of my friends playing it on BTP Radio. Metal Gear Solid Remix(I only got this because it was on beat mania) and Waka laka.

Daecrist 09-27-2004 10:33 AM

The backwards mall arcade here in my small Indiana town recently acquired a DDR machine, and it's become something of a mecca for the nerds in surrounding cities.

I stopped in once to watch my brother and his friends playing on the machine, and it was interesting to say the least. At least it gets some of them exercise that they need but wouldn't get otherwise. Other than that it's plain hilarious to watch.

kittygirl501 09-27-2004 02:15 PM

Well hey, I sort of suck at DDR, but if I had a PS2 then I could play it everyday and get better and better at it. And I even went to the arcade at the base on Saturday so I got quite a bit of practice. That game is friggin' awesome and fun! :D

The Tortured one 09-27-2004 09:20 PM

Oh God, ever since I went back to school I have been dying to play it. When I left I was only missingExotic Ethnic on heavy mode by the skin on my teeth. I would say I can do 7 step heavy songs easily enough, 8 step songs are fairly normal to me, and 9 step songs are hard, but doable.
my favorite songs (on heavy mode of course):
Twilight zone
A
Heaven is a '57 metallic gray
Exotic Ethnic
Bag (can only do this song with speed modifiers)
Holic (this one is mad fun. I do this one when I want to impress people)
Cowgirl (yes, yes I know this one is silly. I play that one to screw around)

Mirai Gen 09-28-2004 10:58 AM

Actually the metal pads can be released for both consoles, even though they're 99 bucks. And there's an anti-slip pad called Dance Pad Revolution if you wish. I have it - it doesn't slide, you just have to keep in mind where you are since there's no 'feeling with your feet' as to where you are like it is in the arcades.

Damn I want to play arcade sometime. I'm good enough.

Gunner11B 09-28-2004 12:53 PM

I wish i had the metal pads. But they cost so dang much, 99 dollars for that. I think i rather just play at an arcade for that.

I thought the metal pads cost 149.99 bucks. That's what they cost at Fry's...darn high prices!

darkt0aster 09-29-2004 12:40 PM

I just got into the DDR craze over the summer. I've already got stepmania on my computer with a whopping 1000 songs. My friends in another resident hall have a PS DDR pad and a PlayStation -> USB converter and we just dance the night away a few times a week. As for my skill level, I usually stick to 6-step songs and working on a few 7s.

Some pretty killer 3rd party songs out there for stepmania... already 5 mixes of video game songs are in my collection. Too many great songs for me to mention all of them here, but I'll list my favorites
Let mom sleep (Jet Grind Radio)
Opening Suite (Halo)
Main Theme (Bubble Bobble)
J-E-N-O-V-A (FFVII)
Wood Man's Theme (MegaMan 2)

Of the regular Mixes, i'd have to say my favorites are
Burning Heat!
TwinBee ~Generation X~
Dynamite Rave
End of the Century
.59
Tsugaru

One last thing, if you're looking for a challenge, go load up stepmania, download DDRei Tournamix 4 and do The Lightswitch Rave on Heavy (yes it's the one from the Strongbad E-mail) or possibly The Legend of ART if you can stand DJ Damien and a large amount of profanity.

Good source of files for Stepmania: http://www.ddramerica.com/bttracker/ (I reccomend the Anime&Videogames as well as all the Tournamix ones)
If you're completely against torrents I can probably send you a few songs if you IM me.

Living Bobbeh 09-29-2004 02:20 PM

If ya want a DDR clone that dosen't require downloading (EG, Play at office or school) Then may I suggest www.flashflashrevoloution.com

darkt0aster 09-29-2004 03:46 PM

heh, i used to do flash flash revolution, good stuff (assuming your computer and/or internet connection isn't ancient), but some of it would kill you if you tried it on a pad (ie Flight of the Bumblebee or a few of the others under 'classics')

I'm also working on my own stepfile for Fett's Vette :D
one that you can dance to and kicks it up higher than what's on FFR for those who tread into Heavy territory.

kittygirl501 09-30-2004 02:33 PM

I'm dying to go to the arcade....must....play....DDR......X__X Blergh...

Spider 09-30-2004 05:38 PM

I've always wanted to play DDR and I got the opportunity to at an after party party I was at a few weekends ago... but I didn't.

It's so much funner to watch stoners fall on their ass when they try. :D

I'll get to it someday...

Derfel 09-30-2004 06:00 PM

I loooooove DDR I played it for the first tim eat a cineplex odeon the other day and I had a blast, I annihilated my friend cause I'm a drummer and have good rhythm, but I wanna buy it for ps2 now and don;t know what pad to buy, is there a nice cheap one for 2 people??

kittygirl501 10-01-2004 03:33 PM

Well, there's the $18 pads which are floppy ones...and they suck...I'd rather buy the metal ones, but they cost like $140...

Zero 10-01-2004 08:34 PM

Theres DDR for XBox also, y'know...It seems Nintendo is missing out on the madness of the Revolution.

I haven't played it in the arcade yet. I'm still refining my schools so I don't look stupid. So far, I'm getting A's on Beginner. Time to head to Novice level.

darkt0aster 10-01-2004 08:51 PM

*currently working on a stepfile for one of the Marvin (yes, the HHGG Marvin) songs (It's the one with the guitar solo in the middle of it)* :D
If anyone knows the artist to be someone besides Douglas Adams or Stephen Moore, the info would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone wants, i'll post it when I'm done

EDIT: okay I though I was further away than I really was and I got it done :D ... btw it only has the Heavy difficulty so far

here's how to play it.
--Go get a DDR simulator, I use StepMania (http://www.stepmania.com)
--Download my stepfile at the link below
http://www.angelfire.com/ult/darkt0aster/marvin.zip
(must copy and paste into your address bar since Angelfire hates us)
--Extract all the files in marvin.zip into stepmania's Songs folder

EDIT: fixed stepmania link

Living Bobbeh 10-02-2004 01:13 AM

I'm gonna give www.stepmania.com a go (Yeah, ya misspelt it above, just links to one of the search sites, Darktoaster) Because A) It's early and B) Got nothing much else to do.

I know they have it for XBox. XBox sucks! Nintendo is totally missing out! I can't even believe they don't have it! All GCN gets is a stupid DK bongo game......

Jack of Spades 10-04-2004 04:56 PM

I'm actually really good at DDR...I suck at real dancing tho.
In a normal game of DDR I'll do a 8 a 6 then a 7. (the difficulty levels if for some reason you didn't know that)
I'm also a white male making my DDR skills even rareer :D

oh yeah http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/ that's another free DDR type game it has the FF7 Boss Battle music!

I suck at real dancing too y'know...I haven't even gone to a school dance in more than a whole year...

UZ_White 10-06-2004 08:21 PM

Hmmmmm... Well, I always loved DDR, but I can't buy the game because I have a friggin Gamecube, not a PS2.

kittygirl501 10-07-2004 03:13 PM

Same with me... :(

darkt0aster 10-07-2004 08:14 PM

a winning equation

PC + $15 PlayStation to USB converter + $30 playstation dance pad + StepMania (free) + song files (free) = $45 DDR better than any console or arcade can provide.

Illuminatus 10-08-2004 01:07 AM

Well since everyone else seems to love it, I'm going to have to say that I think DDR is evil and a plague on this earth and that you all scare me.

You are not the only one who hates it. I have a friend that I hurl more assassination attempts a day at then you vs. the ant crawling on your keyboard. He hates DDR. Why you may ask? "Dancing games are stupid," "There's no point to it." Saying a type of game is stupid just because you inherently suck at it is like bashing another console for no other sake than it's a competitor of your own beloved system. As for their being no point to DDR, there is no point to any other game. It's all just entertainment. DDR is just entertainment that gets our lazy gamer selves off the couch and on to the dance pad.

DDR just can't be a plague. It has no locusts.

Illuminatus 10-08-2004 08:47 PM

I don't hate it because I suck at it (Though I do) or because it's a dancing game...it's just the type of people that play it (Not neccesarily you guys) and it's sheer popularity incite an instinctual reaction against it.

darkt0aster 10-09-2004 12:51 AM

DDR, as with any other popular game is bound to have a given amount of idiots playing. And do they show! That's why I like to play in the comfort of someone's dorm room w/ friends more than the arcade (it's free too).

Fuck! Try explaining that to some preppie popularity hog who thinks games are a waste of time and useless.

I'm like "No SHIT theyre a waste of time. That's the POINT. To kill time by playing. And they're FUN."

anyway.

My dance pad - Dance Pad Revolution 2 - got a small rip in the green outside so now its' acting up like a troubled child on crack. The up button keeps sticking. I'm going to stick the corners to a slab of wood and make it stiff as a board.

Get it? Board? I have a book coming out.

Just imagine a 225 pound, 6 foot tall, 15 year old white boy playing DDR.....and passing Maxx Unlimited on heavy. That's me! Unfortunatly the closest DDR machine is about 65 minutes away....and it broke down about 2 months ago and they haven't fixed it....I own Max2 and Extreme, and also have 756 songs on stepmania, but my computer sucks ass and can't full stepmania at full speed at the lowest settings....IT'S ARROWS MOVING TO THE TOP A THE SCREEN FOR CRYING OUT LOUD(get my point?)
I'd say the hardest songs i've passed are(heavy unless stated otherwise):
Maxx Unlimited
V (challenge)
So Deep
Drop Out
Daikenkai (challenge)
Other various 9 foots

Elliena Camile 10-21-2004 09:05 PM

I used to play a lot of DDR about a year and a half ago. I had a PS2 version and I frequented an arcade that had a DDR machine. I was quite good, but am now, sadly, very, very out of practice.

Quite an accomplishment there. If you're looking for some crazy/different stuff to try on stepmania, go to DDR America and download all 5 tournamixes. I'm sure those will keep you entertained, or at least going "who the hell thought this up?" as you stand in awe.

(note: bittorrent is required)

senfood 10-28-2004 02:14 PM

The world needs more DDR fans so welcome to our ranks! Make sure you buy Extreme for PS2 (I know it's out for X-box, but I'm a loyalist for games that first came out on PS2) You'll be freestyling in no-time

As i said.. my stepmania can barely run... and it's getting worse by the day. I think i do have some tournamix songs...such as The Great Giana Sisters, Beyond Ablities, Dragon God, Invoke, Neo Max, and Scars of Time. By the way.. i beat Maxx Unlimited a couple more times... except I did it on my pads this time(cheap pads) And the DDR machine in my area(65 minutes away) has been fixed...finnaly. I'm also going to be in a tournament this weekend.. can't wait!

Neil-Dog 11-05-2004 01:11 PM

THe only thing differnt from play at the arcade and on the PS2 is u have to know wich DDR u play in the arcade to buy the one like DDR extreme

Sur Freeman 11-06-2004 03:14 PM

Bwh,hahahahahahaha

I prefer the ps2 version caz the ones in the arcade are harder to use caz you have to stomp alot and there f-ed up

CHICAGO¤lollie 11-06-2004 05:26 PM

Whoa, reading through this has just reminded me of what I need to do... Get more Stepmania songs! And dancing characters! And stuff!

I find it much easier to play with the keyboard. Easier co-ordination, less movement required, doesn't make you look like a complete idiot... :D
