Connan O'Brein to replace Jay Leno...

.... in 2009.

O'Brien to succeed Leno at 'Tonight Show' in 2009

NEW YORK (AP) -- NBC announced Monday that Conan O'Brien will take over from Jay Leno as host of the "Tonight" show. But he'll have time to write his jokes -- the planned succession won't happen until 2009.

The announcement solves a delicate problem for NBC, which realized O'Brien was getting antsy in his "Late Night" time slot (12:35 a.m. Eastern) and wanted to keep him from jumping to another network.

Leno planned to make the announcement on Monday's edition of "Tonight," a special celebration of the talk show's 50th anniversary.

"In 2009, I'll be 59 years old and will have had this dream job for 17 years," Leno said. "When I signed my new contract, I felt that the timing was right to plan for my successor and there is no one more qualified than Conan."

"Plus, I promised Mavis I would take her out for dinner before I turned 60," the notoriously workaholic Leno said about his wife.

Leno took over from Johnny Carson on "Tonight" in 1992 and after a few years of trailing the man he beat out for the job in the ratings -- David Letterman -- he passed the CBS star and has been dominant in the time slot.

An unknown at the time, O'Brien had the thankless job of taking over from Letterman on "Late Night," and he was nearly fired after several weeks of painful shows. But he recovered and has been a critical and commercial success.

But O'Brien has openly talked about wanting to move on and, in the late-night world, that means an earlier time slot.

Sweet meat.

But now which barrel scraping loon will they have to get to fill the 'coveted' 12:35 A.M. spot?

And does anyone know why Comedy Central stopped airing Conan repeats?

That sucks...if they get rid of Jay they should keep some of his material. Like Jay-Walking, Headlines, and The Fruitcake Lady

I've always liked Conan more than Lenno. Conan seemed more random, and focused less on celebrities. I'm glad he's getting his new time slot (even if it's not happening for five more years). Hopefully he will keep the same quality that his show's allways had.

Oh, and In the Year 2000 pwnz you. Just wanted you to know.

I have always liked Conan more then Leno, the only thing I liked Leno for was his Headlines, because they where true, other then Conans messed up and disterbing Headlines. But the question is now, who's taking Conan's "Late Night" spot?

Well, it was always a matter of time before Conan got it, since unlike the Guest Host wars (between Leno and Letterman), Conan was running pretty much unopposed, time was his only enemy. But glad to see he will assume power sooner rather than later (well, a tad later vs. who the hell knows when).

I've always thought Conan was the night show master, followed by Leno, followed by Letterman, followed by Jimmy Kimmel, followed by Carson Daly (because hes on late enough to spare people the pain of watching him), and rounding off with the guy on CBS at 12:30. Craig I think. I can't watch him.

Hopefully the heads at NBC won't get the 'bright' idea of just shifting everyone up a time slot, because then people might be subjected to Daly.

*Also, you know Conan's headlines are a joke right? Thats why he spends so long making people believe they're real. My favorite was the "A necklace with alternating black and white bead. Switches between black and white, just like your slutty teenage daughter."*

I think it sucks that Leno's going to stay going till 2009. I think he's an untalented, sellout hack.

But it doesn't bug me TOO much since I never watch him. I'll admit Jaywalking is pretty funny sometimes, though.

Conan's cool though. Letterman's always been my long-time fave, though.

Yeah I do know that Conan's headlines aren't real. That's why I said it was messed up.

Think one of my favorite Conan skits is when he takes someone for the audience and they take him and the desk out for a tour of New York City. And 'If they Mated' is always funny.

And everytime Triumph the Comic Insult Dog is on there is hillarious too.

geez, i don't even know if I'll be alive in 2009. let's discuss this 5 years from now.

I love Conan. You know that something is going down when a latenight show host is openly insulting their network (though it is in jest), talking about quitting the business etc on their show as Conan was for a while over the summer. He's always been better than Letterman or Leno in my mind. He only has about 20 minutes of celebrities, which is still too much in my mind, but meh. Frankly, I just hope they allow him to keep his current style as they move him up a slot. His show has a very random, almost risque quality that Leno/Letterman can't really do because they're supposed to be more "family friendly".

As for my favorites in the lightnight circuit: Conan, Leno/Letterman, Craig Kilborn, Carson Daly. You know how bad Carson is? He's on after Conan. I thought it was a joke. Someone on after Conan. But its not a joke. Carson Daly is really on at 1 AM to 1:30 AM. He has ten minutes of something that pretends to be original material and then he spends 20 minutes talking to celebrities. I'm not sure, because I've never been able to watch an entire show. Craig Kilborn isn't bad, but he's not great either. I've always found Conan the funniest of them all. ALL HAIL C-DOG O'BLING BLING! (how many of you remember that skit?)
