Over-Population (?)

This came up in my world issues class the other day and our teacher asked to go look at different views on global over population. Is it actually occuring right now? Will it be a problem in the future? How can we curb ever growing population growth rates? I figured some of the brightest minds I know could give me some nice insight, so go wild guys if you;d care to voice your opinion.

Well, they actually predict a drop in the birth : Death rate in a few Decades. The problem will "Solve itself" for the short term anyway once the Baby boomers kick the bucket. Then we will have the problem again soon after.

It's not so much that the developed countries that exhibit a problem. It's the developING countries that are.

Look at China and India. China is around a steady billion people and increasing very slowly.

Within 5-10 years, India will have more people than China. This is a huge problem if the US is concerned with world hunger and resources. Actually -- not just the US, that's being blind viewed. I should say the world. Once said nations finally finish developing, it may not be a problem, as population fluctuates every now and then.

Let's just hope that said nations finish developing exponentially population wise.

I think that kinda covers some of it in a general idea.

We have a massive over population problom. We out number the dead! THE DEAD! is it just me or does that seem like there are way to much of us human things, really way to many human things

Derfel 09-30-2004 06:15 PM

Yea developing countries are pretty stable in general, a few are actually on the decline, but yoru right its the "un-developed" countries like china and india where farmers are still prevailing that the populations are still sky rocketing. Will it actually go away once these countries go through the industrializing we did? (U.S. and Canada)

p.s. Wooooo Canada!
p.p.s. arg on you Canadians that are bashin our friends in the states

Well, as history and studies show us, when countries develop and learn things about life and production (health-wise, I mean) and so forth like the US, Canada, and other countries did, population decreases. Well, at least it stops increasing so much.

Somethin' like that...

Dark Black 09-30-2004 06:32 PM

-An increase in population but decrease in number of farmers (due to technology in intensive farming, GM foods, etc) means more people (have to) become more educated.
-More educated people means more scientific research.
-More research means less farmers (again, intensive farming, GM, etc) and therefore more educated people. Also, more research means more space (taller skyscrapers, leveling mountains, etc).
-Also, standards of living increase, as money previously used to fund less efficient forms of food production are put into education, among other things, allowing more people to become educated to a higher degree.
-And so on...

I see these topics in forums so much I created a bunch of generic answers for them, which are in a text file. Labelled crap. Want a more specific answer? Then say something stupid enough to get me riled up enough for a rant...

I've learned in Science that nature always balances things out. Other species have and population spikes and then leveled out at a decent rate. So I think we're going to be fine and dandy.

TheZeroMan 09-30-2004 07:03 PM

Well what short of a massive world war, nuclear holocaust, devestating diease, will shrink the population aka balance it out?

He best hope we can increase significantly our farming technics, or colonize Mars, asap.

Take a vacation into Minnesota, then come back and tell me about overpopulation.
