Mt. St. Helens eruption!

Mt. St.Helens has erupted, again! Now, I don't know how powerful it was, but considering i'm about 200+ miles from it, and I can see it's ash cloud on the horizon, it was a big one. Thoughts? Comments? Post them here!

Um...all the reports I'm hearing are saying it's just a bunch of steam. I even have the VolcanoCam feed on my computer right now and all I see is steam.

Cloud Strife 10-01-2004 02:51 PM

Really? Hmm, I'm sorry for this, then. I appear to have jumped the gun on this one. Maybe the steam kicked up a whole bunch of ash?

EDIT: Where might I be able to view this 'Volcano cam'?

Bob The Mercenary 10-01-2004 02:56 PM

Well, they do have reports of a "small eruption" where only steam came out of it. You're really only 200 miles from it? Man, if you can see a cloud over it when it hasn't even blown yet, I'd get underground. :)

Here's the VolcanoCam link. It went down a second ago, but I imagine it'll be up again soon...or maybe it won't....

...er, yeah it's up again. You can still see the steam coming out of the right side.

Ok, thanks. Here, I've got a link of my own: Mt. St. Helens eruption

Here are my feelings on the Mt. St. Helens eruption.

I hope a hail of pyrite shreds every news crew that was waiting to catch the eruption for the 7 o' clock news.

Cloud, if you're only 200 miles from it you should considering packing up all your most precious belongings and getting ready to drive like a bat outta hell. Or you could run up and kick the side of the volcano...

Me, I'd opt for the sooner. Pack your systems (video games) in fine, luxurious suitcases with padding and put everything else where you can get it...

But seriously, if it does have an eruption, particularly a major, nearly catastrophic eruption, you might not live to tell about it. So...uh...yeah.

Bob The Mercenary 10-01-2004 04:37 PM

They already said that an eruption wouldn't be catastrophic. Lava would flow precisely 3 miles and dust would be thrown up to 50 miles from the volcano. Cloud, you are well out of harm's way. Also, the big 'splosion in 1980 was after 120 years of buildup.

Bob, LordTobias is either sarcastic or a moron. Either way, your explanation is wasted.

My sister lives in Seattle. I am not worried. This was a tiny eruption. Seismologists say that the volcano is just letting off some 'steam'
