Don't Worry Brian
 

After reading the news post on the front page, I went to see these reviews that had gotten Brian a little perturbed. After reading them, I have this to say:

The negative reviews are silly. So are the positive ones...but still, I don't think Brian should be too upset. The reviewers had very little basis for their arguments and they were mostly pretty unconvincing. 8-bit the comic has always impressed me in the freshness and hilarity of it's material, and I'm sure Brian did a good job of translating that humor into book form.

And I didn't think the Tick was funny.

So anyway, I have faith in you Brian, and I'm not even a rabid fanboy.

Yeah, and even if you do let them get to you, you can always leave a flaming bag on their doorstep! ;)

It seems reviewers don't like to take comedy seriously. They seem to assume that if you try to use a humorous plot that it'll be mindless drivel.

I wouldn't concern yourself over it too much, for every one reviewer that bashes the book, you've got about 1000+ fans promoting it.

I don't mind that they have criticisms. It's just that the one guy basically says "Look out 8BT fans, you won't like this (unless you like 8BT)" which makes no sense. And the other guy invoked The Tick and that ghost has been chasing me since I started Nuklear Age.

Pardon my conciseness.

The tick sucks.

Most reviewers really don't read the books they review. Chances are they skim the first few chapters, get a "feel" for the book that can be described at a sixth grade reading level, and jot it down. Unless they are really interested in it, or decide that the plot is really good (or really bad) will they continue. All they gotta do is place it into a genre category, write some snappy taglines, and they're done all the work they need to get paid.

I retract the previous statements. I totally forgot that the reviews are written not by paid writers that risk non-pay if they suck, but by people with zero credentials, except for free speech and the fact that they might have bought and even read the book.

These guys are either idiots or trolls. Either way, you shouldn't listen to them.

More on topic though, these guys would appear to have expected the book to be something it wasn't and thus came out disappointed. Go into a romance movie expecting Dawn of the Dead, you'd come out disappointed. Same principle.

I for one like the feeling of "Where's he going with this?". Makes the book more interesting, so that it doesen't get left in some corner after I've read the first few pages.

Personally, I didn't like The Tick at all, but sometimes when I see a non-Spoon quote, I at least find it mildly amusing. I suspect that, like the Sam & Max cartoon, I couldn't exactly get into it, because the voice actors just couldn't carry the lines, at least for me.

For me, its not just what's said, but how its said, and the VAs didn't fulfill both bits. I mean, I've had the pleasure of reading the actual Sam & Max print comics, and found them a riot, but the cartoon itself ended up being a tad bland, but if I think about what's said & done, it does come rather close to the print comics.

There is, indeed, quite a few folks who will bash something without even really going into the object in question. For example, one guy gave Tales of Symphonia a 4/10 after only 8 hours of play (The minimum clear time is generally 40 hours). Some... no, make that a LOT of folks are complete morons.
