D&D Twinkery Contest

Attention fellow D&Ders!

I would like to propose a character-building contest for all who play the game. The challenge is... build a character who will then be used to compete in an elimination tournament.

There are no rules bar these:

1) Your characters should be built with XP sufficient to raise you to ECL 20 or 20 HD, whichever is lower. If you want to take ECL-increased races and thus not be able to hit character level 20, or if you want to use templates, that's your problem. XP may be spent on whatever you want, be it wishes, permanencies, what have you, but the sources of expenditure must be CLEARLY listed.

2) No 3rd party material, like AEG's Legend of Five Rings material for the d20 system. Technically, it works. But it's not allowed, because other settings use all kinds of crazy effects not balanced against standard WOTC material.

Campaign settings like Eberron or Ghostwalk or FR are allowed, though - they're published by WOTC. Same thing goes for Planar Handbook, Compelte Warrior/Divine and what have you.

3) If you are using variant classes from Unearthed Arcana, or indeed, any variant rules from Unearthed Arcana, please declare them beforehand. Gestalt classes are NOT allowed.

4) Feats, prestige classes, etc must be referenced, with a sourcebook, and page number if appropriate. If you are using Web Enhancement, please state which one and where it can be found.

5) Character builds should be as clear and detailed as possible, so it is easy to judge a mechanically sound character.

For example:
Quote:

Feats:
1 Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Bastard Sword
3 Weapon Focus: Bastard Sword
6 Power Attack
9 Cleave
12 Great Cleave
15 Weapon Specialization: Bastard Sword
18 Greater Weapon Specialization: Bastard Sword
More detailed:

Quote:

Level......Base Feats........................Bonus Feats
1...........EWP: Bastard Sword...........WF: Bastard Sword
2..................................................Power Attack
3...........Cleave
4..................................................Great Cleave
5
6...........WS: Bastard Sword.............Two Weapon Fighting
7
8..................................................ITWF
9...........GTWF
10.................................................Improved Buckler Defense
11
12.........GWS: Bastard Sword
Unless you use Psychic Reformation, please plot out your feats level by level.

6) We are using D&D 3.5 Edition rules for this. House rules are NOT allowed.

Finally... each character should have an appropriate and compelling backstory. Good character design and good roleplaying need not be mutually exclusive, after all.

I will post links to the 3.5 System Reference documents soon enough.

EDIT: Here you go...

System Reference Documents - AKA the rules.

Mind's Eye

Rules Clarifications

Web Enhancements

Errata

Note that 3.5 Corebooks are superseded by 3.0 Errata. For example, the 3.0 Monster Manual Errata's rules on Natural Weapons are superseded by the 3.5 Monster Manual.

Feel free to put any queries in this thread as well.

Thank you for your time.

I hate to rain on your parade...

But 3rd edition sucks.

Second edition 4 life bitches!!!

Oh and by the way, the day that AD&D gets referred to as a WOTC game, should NEVER EVER HAPPEN. It's a TSR production, no matter how much money wizards throws around, they cannot, and should not, EVER take credit in any way shape or form, for the absolute travesty they've brought down upon what *ONCE* was a fantastic rpg.

wotc destroys everything they touch, except for magic, which is the only damn thing they're good for.

Have a REAL character creation contest, on TSR AD&D, and maybe i'll participate. 3.5. BLECH.

Aww. You don't like 3E. Fair enough.

Well, if you don't like this, then kindly FUCK OFF instead of being a trollish RETARD. I am not forcing you to look at this or take part in this, so if you don't like it, jolly well don't fucking look at it!

Dante's got a point. That's not a line of discussion that needs to be pursued further.

And by the way Dante, how's that elimination tournament going to be executed? Because I got a feeling this might be well suited in the RP forum, depending on the mode of battle.

What about weapons, armor and other equipment? There has to be some limit to that so nobody goes into this with a greatsword of D&D Twinkery Contest-Winning +1337.

Dante 10-12-2004 09:09 AM

Basically, I'll be pairing people up at random, then the winners continue fighting, while the losers continue fighting...

So it'll look something like this -

Round 1: (1-2) (3-4) (5-6) (7-8)

Round 2:

(1-4) (6-7)

(2-3) (5-8)

Round 3:

(1-7)

(4-6)

(2-8)

(3-5)

End of contest:

(1)
(7)
(6)
(4)
(2)
(8)
(5)
(3)

I was also thinking of a special bonus round after all's said and done...

There won't be too much roleplaying unless the participants want it, but the mechanics will be VERY important in this matchup. You don't have it, no pulling BS out of your butt to try and get something you didn't pay for. Rules as written will be pretty important here, though I think I'll need help to adjudicate spells like Wish or Miracle.

Like I've said before, no house rules. Published equipment only, and I intend to stick with the recommended PC treasure limits as published in the DMG.

Unless you have some REALLY neat stunt for getting free gear, the max is 760'000 gp worth of stuff.

And no artifacts, minor or major either.

Are you going to use that Psion Clawmaster twink you keep mentioning, Dante?

Dante 10-12-2004 11:47 AM

I'm not taking part. It's only fair that way.

How will combat work? And is there differant terrains or all the charecters just gonna get in a big collesium? And what about feats and races in Dragon Magazine? It's owned by Wizards too. And also do we PM the charecters to you or E-mail them or what?

This sounds like fun tho I'll have a charecter ready in a couple of days.

Raging_Dragon_Samuri 10-12-2004 03:37 PM

hmm...

This sounds like hella-fun. I don't have my books with me here at college but i kinda want to participate. Since it is a contest/tournament, is there a prize? Also, where will this competition be held? i would really like to watch if i am unable to participate.

Mmmm.....challenges......taste...so..good...
