Get off the internet and vote

http://getofftheinternetandvote.com/

Check it out, a bunch of webcomic authors have gotten together to create some sweet sweet motivation for us to go out and vote. They don't care for whom, just anyone.

Everyone that enters gets something. Frankly, it's pretty sweet. And one person wins a load of stuff.

I disagree with this completely. Why?

Because convincing people to vote with prizes just gets a bunch of people out there picking someone randomly to get their presents, or gets people with no idea what the issues are or how they will affect the world voting with nothing but a gut-emotional response.

Ozy and Millie said it best:

Seriously, voter turnout being low in a country where fast food is more important than civil liberties to most people is NOT a bad thing.

However, considering the choices, I'd have to say that no matter the outcome of the election, we're still going to be stuck with an ex-druggy. It'd probably be better for Bush to be back in office, because then we wouldn't have to go through the administration change to get the same results, but I would like to see a return to the party-less system. Then we might get a better choice than giant douche or turd sandwich...but that's hoping for too much, isn't it? Seriously though, Krylo is right. If people are too unmotivated to vote on their own, then they have no business in the voting booth.

Wait...

A RETURN to the party-less system?

When did we have the party-less system? I mean maybe with Washington if you want to go THAT far back, but besides that...

Elminster_Amaur 10-29-2004 09:31 PM

Yes, I did mean back to the style of government back when Washington was pres.

My Lead Airbag 10-29-2004 09:36 PM

But even then we had all the strict vs. broad and progressives vs. consertatives. Thank you history class...and America: (the book)...and Dave Barry Slept Here.

Damn, you hafta have a voter registration to win the prize. Although you don't technically have to vote if I'm reading that right.

KefkaTaran 10-30-2004 01:19 AM

Yeah, even with Washington it could be argued we had parties... basically the Federalists v. the anti-federalists, even if these weren't exactly official.

EDIT: And don't get me wrong. I'm actually FOR a no-party system, or at the very least a broader choice of mainstream parties to choose from.

I don't agree with this either. if people don't care enough to go out and have their say on their own without this sort of incentive, it's good that they're not voting, right?

you may voice your opinion, not you must.

Quote:

"And if you don't have the first idea of things... just keep your trap shut." - a well-known German comedian's catchphrase. Applies to more than one might think, apparently.

Their intention is undoubtedly a good one, but I'm leaning towards the non-agreement myself, for reasons that have been mentioned. Disinterest is a problem, but not one that should be solved by giving away stuff.

We have this thing on campus called the New Voters Project. They stand around and harass people all day long, asking if they're registered to vote, even though everyone and their mom is. THen they call you four times a day, asking ofr comittments to vote. IT sucks.

People will vote if they want to vote. Pressuring and enticing them is a stupid way to increase voter turnout. Society needs to change, we don't need incentives.
