Final Fantasy

So, tell us: What is your favorite FF game? VOTE OR BE STABBED!

Little Unicorn Boy 10-30-2004 11:24 PM

i love them all, so i voted other!

PhasmaRok 10-30-2004 11:29 PM

For me, it's tied between FF7 and FF9. But 7 has Materia. And Sephiroth. And Kuja scares the living poop out of me. And I REALLY hate Zorn and Thorn.
So FF7 gets my vote.

Squall Leonhart 10-31-2004 12:08 AM

Sue me if you so desire! I voted FF VIII. The characters are all cool (Squall, Laguna and Irvine, mainly), Story was great too, and the battle system was like nothing we've seen before (Nor still have, it's completly revolutionary). As for all of you FF VIII haters, I present to you this link.

Edit: Shouldn't this be at the Video Game Forum?

shiney 10-31-2004 12:16 AM

And I present to you a new and different forum, namely the video games one.

Mirai Gen 10-31-2004 12:20 AM

Six. FF7's clashing graphics and overextended hype pissed me off, and the plotline was nothing short of overly-complex and confusing. Albeit it was pretty damn cool at times and the battle system was fun, I was grittting my teeth in anger at some of the dumber "haha we tricked you."

Of course I also loved MGS2...but than again I expected plot twists to the Nine Hells and back.

And hey shiney, speaking of which, wanna make this a sticky, since this is brought up every few months?

Meister 10-31-2004 02:55 AM

Funny enough, there is a sticky called "Final Fantasy Favourites." :) It's no poll though, so, well, vote away.

Cloud Strife 10-31-2004 03:27 AM

Do you even have to ask me which one I voted for? It's my favorite game of all time, too.

KefkaTaran 10-31-2004 05:35 AM

Ah, haven't had one of these in a while.

Six. I mean, seriously. COME ON FOLKS.

mammothtank 10-31-2004 05:06 PM

FFVI rocked! Awesome soundtrack, hilarious cast, and great graphics (no, FFVII wasn't an improvement - realistic graphics aren't always better). Plus, who can argue with the Ragnarok, a sword that uses MP to always deal a critical hit and casts Flare to boot!

Illuminatus 10-31-2004 05:08 PM

Since the only one they made for the PC was FFVII, that gets my vote.

I also think it's funny when people say FFVII's plot was too complex. I think it's much prefereable to "3V1l G3nus t4k3 0v3r t3h w0r1d!!!!!!!!111111" kind of stuff.

LordZoma 10-31-2004 05:57 PM

Materia is definitely the best system they ever offered. I anticipate another final fantasy game that uses the same system, maybe even a sequel to final fantasy 7 after the movie rakes in the profit.

Viktor Von Russia 10-31-2004 06:39 PM

In my opinion, FFVI was the best, with FFVII in a somewhat distant second place. I thought VI had better characters, weapons, and at times, plot. As for graphics, I prefer the simple sprites to boxy 3D stuff. Just add Limit Break to FFVI, and I think it'd be better than VII in every way.

Chrono 10-31-2004 07:10 PM

I wasn't sure which versions you were talking about so I think I accidently put one on 3 when I wanted to put it on six.

But six is the greatist FF of all time. :D

beinsane 10-31-2004 07:56 PM

8 also came out for PC. (As did 11, but that doesn't really count...)

Anyway...I've always felt that 5 didn't get the respect it deserved.

Outbounder 10-31-2004 08:06 PM

I voted for VII. I may be a bit biased towards it, because it was the first FF I really played. Actually, it was the game that introduced me to RPGs in general. Before that I primarily played platformers, fighting games, and sports games.

Plus, it had Materia, and I really liked the story. It was like reading a good book, but it was interactive.

videogamerz2000 10-31-2004 08:48 PM

I like more than one, but i do despise one over the other as well. If only it were such a simple question. But for now, I'll only give a simple answer.
I like FF7 and 8, and 6 and 4. Always.
Currently: FFTA, i'm kicking ass for the moment

My Lead Airbag 10-31-2004 09:04 PM

I voted other, because the best FF game is and always will be Ehrgeiz, behind only KH.

I think you shoulda excluded FF1 and 2 and included FFX and FFT. FF1 is like a skeleton of a game, and FF2 has such a horrendous system that the only way to get good stats is to have a direct meth IV connected to your brain. I'll be surpised if they get more than three votes (one or two as joke votes, and one to spite me).

EDIT: ON FF8. Its system was not revolutionary, if it was it would have been copied, instead it faded away never to be used, like FF2's. You aren't penalized for using those extremely long ass summons (I know this because before every boss battle I'd use all the GFs until I got to the point where there was no wait). The characters are too hot-button to comment on. And just so ya know, FF8 was not only my first FF, but my first RPG ever.

shiney 10-31-2004 09:32 PM

Ehrgeiz and KH aren't FF games. What were you thinking? They feature some of the characters, that's about it.

FFX and FFT shouldn't have been included over 1, if you ask me. I think it is fine the way it is right now. FFX was...ridiculous, really, and FFT isn't a "true" final fantasy game. It merely features many similarities and the same title. But to suggest excluding FF1, the origin of the series? Madness.

Two I can understand 'cause it was weird. :B But I still like how things are.

SNAFU 10-31-2004 09:36 PM

I voted for Final Fantasy 6 for two reasons:
Story
Characters

One can argue that most Final Fantasies had the same basic story and usually pull it off pretty well. Final Fantasy VI is good because it has substance. It has twists and internal conflicts. The score is powerful. And you don't find stupid stuff out at the end like "I'm not the real bad guy, I'm being controlled by an even BIGGER evil. Fight it now."

Characters. This is one of the few games I've played that the characters actually meant something to me. There are characters that I absolutely love (Celes in particular). You care about these people and you forget that they are 16 bit sprites no bigger than your thumbnail.
Each character stood for something instead of just being a class or Materia slots.

That is why I voted for Final Fantasy VI.

My Lead Airbag 10-31-2004 09:36 PM

The Ehrgeiz and KH things were a joke. I knew I shoulda included that 'revealing' black text, although I kinda hoped seeing the word Ehrgeiz ould have immediatly made the entire sentence a joke.

And FF1 doesn't hold up to time well. It may be the begining, but like I said, its only a skeleton of an RPG.

Krylo 10-31-2004 09:41 PM

It's not even really a skeleton of an RPG. There's no role playing involved.

The battle system was sloppy and unrefined (elemental damage wasn't even implemented), no one in the game had any personality at all (the characters don't even have any lines), and the best you get of an NPC is "Do this" or "Go here." It's more a dungeon crawler than an RPG.

Mr. Viewtiful 10-31-2004 09:42 PM

Final Fantasy Tactics 4-evar!!1!

Sure, the other ones I played were good (6, 7, 8, and 9), but none of them ever really gave me areason to play them much. FFT was another thing, simply because the battles were awesome (the story, too). I had to actually plan this time, instead of mashing the O button to beat random encounters.

I'm not disrespecting the others, but FFT was my favorite.

Actually, you are penalized for using them. The more you use the summon in one battle, the weaker it becomes. And the reason they were long was because you could do the boost during them by hitting select and tapping the square button when you were told to, once the GF learned Boost.

Also, for those of you that want to see the materia system in a sequel to FFVII, wasn't the whole point of the game that MATERIA is SOULS and bad to be used in that way?

OK, OK, not the whole point, but still. It's like the Mist from FFIX.

I think FFT is in fact a true final fantasy it's just like a change in the gameplay or something like, infact it is my favorite(sp?), thats why I voted "other".

PS. NOT FFTA im talking about the psx title.

Sky Warrior Bob 11-01-2004 07:54 AM

Of the Final Fantasy games I've played, my fav has to be Final Fantasy Adventure, for the GameBoy. It was like Zelda mixed with Final Fantasy. And unless I'm mistaken, it came up with the weapons as tools gimmick before Zelda 3.

Anyway, I thought it was sweet and its too bad they didn't try for another one.

SWB

The_Muppet_Man 11-01-2004 08:55 AM

VII, as I said in the other thread. Was my first, and (like most FF games) the challenge potential is limitless.

Aeria 11-01-2004 05:18 PM

To illuminate those who may not know, Final Fantasy Adventure was not really a Final Fantasy. I mean this not in the way that Final Fantasy Mystic Quest isn't a Final Fantasy, I mean this in the way that Secret of Mana is not a Final Fantasy. (I'm typing Final Fantasy way too much). FFA's japanese name is "Seiken Densetsu". That means that is the prelude to Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, Legend of Mana, and Sword of Mana. It was still a great game, and it had a Chocobo with mechanical legs. I just thought I'd letcha know...

Edit: Oh yeah! Someone had mentioned that if VI had limit breaks it would beat VII in every way. VI DID have limit breaks! They were just implemented differently. They were called desperation attacks. If you were really low on HP and you attacked, sometimes you'd do a REALLY cool looking attack that did massive damage. These attacks were in the same spirit as VII's, VIII's, IX's and X's, but couldn't be manipulated as much. This spirit being "When you've taken enough damage, you can do some powerful attack to take out your frustration". Because it was semi-random, you couldn't save it up until a boss fight or anything, which, in MY opinion made it better. I voted for IV btw, for so many reasons it isn't funny.

Krylo 11-01-2004 06:50 PM

Completely true. I've beaten that game about four times, however, and only gotten a desperation attack once. It was either Celes or Terra... I forget which. Anyway, she whipped some SERIOUS goddamn shit out.

Not a very well known thing, though. It was made far far far too rare in that game. As I said, four times through, got the move once.

KefkaTaran 11-01-2004 07:47 PM

Plus Limit Breaks are an extremely small bit anyways and VI still beats VII in every way.

Lost in Time 11-01-2004 07:59 PM

FF7: Because it was wierd, and I like wierd stuff.

FF9: Because it was the first one I played and it was brought back to the pre-playstation games.

Other: Because I loved FFTA!

wasnt FFVIII(8) on the PC not FFVII(7)? cause i looked around and couldnt find 7 on the PC. if someone could point the way for me to getting FFXII on the PC please tell me.
8 gets my vote.
3 and 6 are the exact same thing. one just has better graphics, and movies.

AndyBloodredMage 11-01-2004 08:31 PM

I came into ff7 with absolutely no expectations. I had never heard of a final fantasy, let alone an RPG. Sure I had played Diablo, but that's just hack 'n' slash. 7 was probably the single turning point that brought me into console gaming, I was that blown away by it. The story was gripping, plot twists abound, cool characters, creative villians, awesome battle system; I was hard-pressed to find fault. For that, and other reasons, it shall always hold a special place in my heart.

Congratulations square, you've owned my soul for 6 years.

And as for ff6 limit breaks, I played through it once and got celes limit and cyans. Pretty cool, but wasted on stupid veldt monsters.

And NAH, there is no difference between ff3 and ff6j, but in japan final fantasy 6 and 3 are two different games. They're just stupid and changed the name weirdly.

KefkaTaran 11-01-2004 08:55 PM

New Age Hitler: as has been previously covered in this thread, both FF7 and FF8 were released on PC.

UZ_White 11-01-2004 09:20 PM

FF1 is my fav, because of the great plot, cool selection of characters, and nostalgia of it.

Sesshoumaru 11-01-2004 09:32 PM

I put FF6 but then relized that I could have put "other" for FFT. It was, by far, the greatest game ever (with the possible exception of Chrono Trigger, but that isn't a FF game). Plus, no matter how many people say FF7 had the best plot twist, that honor belongs to Tactics (kudos to the fist person to guess what I'm talking about).

PS One thing I really liked about FF6 is that there isn't a main character that they shove down your throat (unlike basicly all other RPGs), it makes all of the characters seem equally important.

Lost in Time 11-01-2004 09:37 PM

You know... you guys can put more then one option right?

Wait... nostalgia?? It's the first ff... How can you feel nostalgic?

chryos_the_forsaken 11-01-2004 09:55 PM

Final Fantasy 9, hands down. the graphics were better than part of the ps2 games I've seen, not to mention an incredible storyline. ff9's skill system is pretty much a cut and paste of the materia system, albeit that the weapons already have materia attached, but similar none the less. Not to mention the characters were all charming or just cool in some way. Ammarant Carrol beats any other ff character ever,(except fighter) and the rest are all funny in some way. I'd also like to include the fact that FF9 is the last true FF game to date to include the revolutionary battle guage system.(stupid 10, stupid turn based) i think 9 balanced out better too, although some of it was quite depressing, all ff games have their disappointing points. Such as the death of Aeris or Cecil being the most powerful dk in the world and still sucking against garland.

nice one, sesshoumaru I can see you are a true lover of the fine arts ^^.
Sriously though I don't know how many times I've said this but...FFT is just GREAT..just watch some of those cutscenes and you WILL fall inlove with the game .

Sesshoumaru: ( King Delita + Queen ovelia ) best cutscene EVER !!!! !

Dac 11-02-2004 07:16 AM

But of course fft for me was by far the absolute best ff game i ever played the others were okay i've played and beaten and that was that but final fantasy tactics was so good i played that countless times over and over despite it only having one cg movie in it.

I voted FFVII. (go materia system) but it's really a tie between FFXI and FFVII. (Go Phoenix sever)

Slipstream 11-02-2004 12:34 PM

The original name of the game in Japan was "Final Fantasy Gaiden: Sekien Densetsu." Now You Know(tm).

P-Sleazy 11-02-2004 07:25 PM

so could anyone point the way out to me like where i could possible find FFVII fer PC? cause i tried the square enix site and they dont have anything bout the game there, only the movie. thx

StabbityMage 11-02-2004 09:06 PM

Ffix

FFIX has my vote!

1. The first I played
2. I am similar to Zidane in every way (down to the perversion & blond hair)
3. If you have a certain cheat on, you can get more MP and summon Bahamut at the beginning
4. The easy control system
5. The moogles! They are sooooooo coooool! ^^
6. Umm....I can't think of anything else...

swordmaster 11-02-2004 09:52 PM

Crap, i accidently pressed 2. I meant 4. Shiney, do your thing.

AndyBloodredMage 11-02-2004 09:55 PM

You might've wanted to include FFX seperate from the "other" section, so that way people aren't voting for the crap and FFX.
