Regarding RPs

I'm not sure how to put this in the right words but I have a question/suggestion here for the admins.

Is it possible that the admins create a special sub-forum for a specific RP that has "survived" long or have long-term plans? This is because I find it tedious and hard to relocate old threads especially when there are new RPers or when we want to locate old info. Take my current RP in the forum for example. It already has more or less 5 old threads and I foresee more coming in the future. Since the rules here say that once the posts in the thread reach a certain amount, we have to create a new one. And now, when we want to look for old stuff, we have to tear the whole RP forum apart just to look for the old threads.

Well, consider this in a different way. By making a sub-forum(I'm not sure whether it's possible here, but I'm sure it's possible in a vb board) for individual rp stories(again, the GOOD ONES ONLY), you can actually separate the GOOD RPs so far from the bad ones and save them for archiving purposes, which allows the members(especially new members) of the forum to browse the story from the start easily. I'd hate to see all the good RP threads slide into "oblivion" as time passes.

However, it is not neccesary to create sub-forums for the RPs. If you can find an alternative, please do let me know.

That is all that I have to say. I hope the admins consider this.

I definitely support this. When I went to join his RP, I ended up looking through a large chunk of the forum to find out what everyone else could do. Maybe have a related thread option so that threads on the same topic could be linked, and accessed from a menu in the thread?

Arhra 11-01-2004 06:42 AM

Well all you really need to do is put a link to the older threads in the start of the new one. I think the mods already said something about subforums being out of the question.

Or you could use the 'search this forum' option in the upper right hand corner, then put in the name of one of the characters. Preferably one with an unusual name. Then you'll narrow it down to that RP and maybe one page of assorted things.

I agree with Arhra. That is what I do. I always link a new thread to the previous one. So part 3 links to part 2, part 2 links to part 1, part one links to sign-up.

Krylo: The problem with the search button is that sometimes the threads' titles do not possess any identifying words.

Arhra: Well, that is possible of course, but wouldn't it be much organized - and neater - if we put the mentioned RPs into a sub-forum of their own. I think I've seen some other forum boards do this, and it was quite good. Also, what of completed RPs, those that have finished their story to the end? I'm sure there are SOME RPs worth saving out there....

Anyway, this is up to the Admins. If they don't agree with the suggestion, then fine. It's alright with me. :)

ok then make a table at the begining of each page like this
sign-up
thread 1
thread 2
thread 3

Yes some other boards do that, but those boards sometimes also make you ask first before starting ANY RPG, which really limits the number of RPGs. And typically they enforce strict rules, and they tend to delete things. That has been my experience at least. As for the linking to previous threads, it is pretty organized; in the first post of the new thread just put a link to the last thread. That way, as long as ANY thread is still alive, you can easily find the previous ones. As for finding the 'good' ones of the past, I don't really have a suggestion for that...

However, all that said, it would be nice to have a sub forum for RPGs. It would make it so much easier to find a specific one, because of all of the discussion threads and RPGs and sign ups...

There are things I can discuss with Brian concerning private sub-forums, but ultimately I will have to say 'don't count on it'. You don't just have to search for thread titles after all, you can search for posts within the threads. So clarifying that you are looking for say, a certain name, in the roleplaying forum, searching posts that are like a month, 3 months old, and older, you should be ok.

I agree with Shiney, it's a lot of work to make sub-forums and then mod them, make sure nothing gets deleted because it's too old etc.. Linking back to the previous threads works well up until you have 10+ chapters. Then your whole first post is just a bunch of links. I always suggest searching the rp forum for the threads when people ask me about my rps. It's too tedious and frankly too much work for me to link up my 20 chapters of Cyber Wars to the first post of every chapter.
