Fencing - The Swords, not the wooden posts

Okay, I do fencing. I like the stabby stabbyness of when I hit opponents. Whats worrying now is that recieving them is also good fun...weird, innit'?

Anyways, anyone else here do fencing, or a sword art of some kind?

fencing seems fun, but im not quite athletic enough to take it up.

I'm going to pretty soon. With my grandma. You really don't need to be very athletic to do this.

I fence too, through Virginia Academy of Fencing. I have yet to compete though, but I tink I'm alright. I do foil right now, but Ive been told that because of my height (I'm 6'2") I should do eppe.

Well, I don't know much about fencing, besides the fact that it looks cool and it involves stabbination of your opponent, which is always good. However, I've never been quite as fascinated by European fencing as I have Japanese fencing (kendo). In all likelyhood, it's because I'm such an anime geek, but there's something about kendo that draws me in. I've never heard of a kendo class over here in the states, but maybe that's just because I haven't actively looked for one.

Deathosaurus Wrecks 11-01-2004 02:36 PM

oh im pretty sure you can find kendo classes. one of my college roomamtes had studied it and tried to teach me some. i didn't learn much 'cuz all i did was smack his knuckles with my boken.

Ahahahahaha!

I just had the mental image of a fencer entering a kendo match. 3, 2, 1 begin! Thack! Thud! The fencer is on the floor with a horizontal dent in his mask and a red welt on his face.

Rhana 11-01-2004 03:30 PM

Possibly.
A sportsmanlike match or a serious fight?
Personally I think in a real (death) match the kendo-user would get the point of a rapier through the heart. But it's hard to tell with such different styles. They use the blade differently: point v. length.

I'd like to take up fencing. One of my friends took it last year, and you definitely don't need to be really athletic to do it. His instructor was almost Olympic level and he's friggin' 300 pounds and is the spitting image of a turtle.

I do all kind of swordsmanship. Kendo, Bushido, Fencing... Of what I know, I'm pretty sure a kendo praticioner (sp?) could easily beat a fencer. Obviously, it also depnds on the sword wielder. Anyway, what I mean is that a japanese kendo swordsman has an advantage over the fencing swordsman.

Hope that's not very confusing. :)
