In conclusion, I hate you all.
I've been getting some whining about my comic, Super mage club. (www.freewebs.com/uzandthegang and click on SMC.) People are idiots, and are telling me not to copy off of Brian and his 8 bit theater. Can anyone tell me (Besides the FF1 sprites) ANYWAY I have blatently copied off Brian? Anyone? I want some reasons for all of this! :bmage:
|
hmmmmm. I'd say its this:
people are dumbasses+you used mage sprites=you plagerized That, or I missed something. |
I say screw em. Brian, even though he is one of my favorite writers of all time, he doesn't own those sprites. So keep doing what you're doing. Just don't copy Brian's jokes or gags, then you could be in trouble if you do.

Well, it's essentially nothing like 8bit theater. But a few pointers, I guess...
1) The size and scale of your comics keep changing. That sucks, and is annoying. 2) You are in sore need of html, so you can have "next" and "previous" buttons on each page. Having each link open a new jpg is annoying. 3) Your link for comic #11 is messed up. That..well, you get it. It's a decent strip as terms of creativity go (though it feels very. very disconnected at times) however those particular problems could potentially break it. Having said that, I fade again. |
You hate me? You don't even know me. Thanks for runining my life.
I not sure why people claim your ripping off anyone, its not like their aren't 10,000 sprite comics using megaman sprites.... |
Dude, UZ, how long have you been 'spriting'? Some of us here have been doing it longer than you have. Do not assume that comic authors need your advice on how to run a comic. I wanted only a comment on how it was, not on how it should be!
Respect other comic authors, or we will disrespect you. Besides, you're doing what all authors done at some point in their life, RECOLORS! I know I use Megaman 7 as a base, at least I make mine look different though. Brian gets away with using Game Sprites from FF1 because he's good with humour and he has very good looking comics. All I can suggest to you, UZ, is to stay quiet for now, hone you comic and sprite skills, and prove us all wrong and then laughing in our face. And you can call me a hypocrite as well with this post I made, but please, improve your style with comics and less replicated humour from well known comics and then perhaps we can fully appreciate how good you actually are. |
Well... you COULD have posted that perticular post in YOUR thread...
OK, a few points I would like to make. Shiney: 1. Yes, being new at PS, I was unaware they would do that, and later in the series, (I haven't posted the newer ones, because my internet on my good computer is broken.) I did fix the size at 1 size. 2. OK, I want a decent website, but my dad ain't helping me get a non freewebs site until I get "Popular". So, I won't be getting any back-forward buttons until I get a "Fanbase." 3. See #1 for the reason. Oh, and Jeimuzu? What do you mean by saying my comics copy others jokes? And read your original post. It SAYS that you want suggestions, and I didn't think your jokes were very good. Sorry. |
Hmm... Well, let's see. What do I always do when reviewing a subpar comic...? Oh, yes.
First, I direct the budding author to this site, which gives plenty of good tips on what NOT to do when making a good sprite comic. That site being: http://www.fragile-minds.com/crashnbass/donts.html Second, I point out which of the Commandments on the site in particular apply to your comic, and how. Here we go: Commandment 3: Don't Carbon-Copy jokes from other webcomics. Don't think that we aren't noticing the jokes you take-and-slightly-modify from 8BT. For example, the "All this and nobody thought of poor Brown Mage," in Episode 14 is obviously taken from RM's line from when he was turned into a frog and nobody cared. There are more, but I'll leave it at that. Commandment 5: Don't endlessly trash your own comic to get pity praise. As something of a webcomic reviewer, and someone who pays more attention to specific details then broader details, I've noticed some subtle instances of self-depreciating humor in your comic. I won't point them out, because as I said, they're subtle. Commandment 6: Regarding Pixels... Like Shiney said, keep the scaling of your comics at one thing. It's annoying to adjust one's eyes to it. Commandment 9: If you're gonna do sprite recolors, avoid generic or eye-stinging ones. Your recolors have 'Generic' written all over them. 'Nuff said. And for the non-commandment sections... -The jpeg image format (.jpg) is meant for photos. Jpeg causes the graphics of your comic to blur and slightly scatter, which can be especially obvious when you use large areas of a single color - which will happen a lot in sprite comics. The graphics get dirty and grimy. It's best to stick to either .gif or .png image files, which preserve the colors better. -Generally, "standard plots" are either early plotlines from Bob and George, or just the kind of stuff that everyone who wants to make their characters fight something comes up with. Common examples would be a sudden, inexplicable attack of robot masters (often unchanged sprites just randomly picked from various games), or the characters rebelling against the author because they don't want to be part of the comic. When you're just starting off a comic, especially one with no new characters, it's an easy step-up to a plot of your own... but remember that people might easily dismiss your comic when there's nothing new happening. Third, I give a personal note or two. This being: Get rid of the header-and-footer crap. It's not funny, and it detracts and distracts terribly from the actual comic. |
OK, a few rebuttals to your comments and those stupid commandments.
1. OK, I'm sorry about the genaric coloring... It's hard to give 8 bit people entirly new and great colors, but I DID give some thought to the coloring. Originally I was only going to make an orange mage, but the colors clashed... There are a few others, but onward to the next point... 2. The BM line wasn't intentional, OK? It WASN'T EVEN THE JOKE OF THE COMIC! Besides, I want to KNOW what I'm doing wrong, not general hints, OK? TELL ME WHAT JOKES I'VE COPIED! :rmage: 3. Yes, I do degrade myself occasionally in my comics. Sorry. I can't find anything in SMC myself, though... The only thing I see is where we see me telling PM about a "Plothole". Please TELL ME WHERE I'VE DONE IT, HOWEVER! 4. My plot? Well, sorry about the plot, it IS kind of generic... I did try and come up with some non-genaric bad guys... 5. About jpegs. I've been asking around, and NO ONE can tell me how exactly to make a comic NOT change size like that without saving it as a Jpg! (A low quality one at that.) Oh, and my backgrounds are such that you don't notice much of a problem with jpgs. Anyone know how? Hmm? 6. OK, OK, no more header and footer. I was considering getting rid of it anyway. Thanks for the help, buddy. But, if you won't actually POINT OUT what I'm doing wrong, how about not helping at all. |
Use .png or .gif instead of .jpg
If you don't have a program to do so, do a web search for the gimp. It allows you to and as far as I recall it's free. |
