Fat World.
Fat kids?
Childhood obesity is on the rise, apparently. I've noticed a lot of programs on TV within recent months that have been trying to tackle the issue, but to no avail. We're a world full of fat people and proud of it. (Or at least that's what the media claim.) I look around the streets and I don't see what the big deal is. So there are a handful of overweight kids in a class, compared to a score of regular size kids. This doesn't mean that the world has gone junk food crazy. This doesn't mean that we're doomed to be a fat nation. (The UK has big issues with overweight kids at the moment...) It just means some kids enjoy food more than others! Most of it is 'puppy fat' which will shed off once the kids grow and settle into their bodies. I admit, we could do more to prevent our children from eating too much unhealthy food. Fast food chains and convienience stores don't help with their choices of fatty/sugary foods with very little alternative. Maybe if the government helped lower the prices of the healthy eating foods, we wouldn't be forced to having to buy the cheaper, fattier alternatives. Opinions on the world getting fatter? |
I am 19 years old. I've been on a strict diet of cheeseburgers, pizza, and Halo ever since I entered college. I eat loads of candy and cookies every night along with at least three 360 calorie Boost milkshakes. I weigh just over 100 lbs.
Girls say they wish they had my body. I always say to them, "baby, you can have it." |
Well one of the problem is the health food craze itself. I remember way back when, where Carbs were considered the health food and anything else was considered bad. Now "Carbs" are the bane of all existance. The point I am trying to make here is that it causes confusion. On top of that, you have the Mad Cow and Foot and Mouth deseases of the past, the constant threat of salminella, and a hundred other things that the media has drilled into your head, saying all but "This food will kill you!" until the only thing parents are left to do is force feed Mac & Cheese down their kids pie holes because it's the only thing that's safe.
As long as I can remember, there've always been fat kids. so what? the only real increase of fat kids that I can see are on television; like that kid that looks like Jabba the Hutt in that On-Star commercial (Don't look at me like that, you were thinking the exact same thing). Yes eating right is important, but you don't have to go through fifty thousand fab diets to do so. I am 5'6. At my highest weight I was 185 lbs, and pretty damn fat. you know what I did to get it off? I walked up a fucking hill once every day, and stopped shoving so much food in my pie hole in one sitting. Lost 45 lbs over that summer, and it's still going down. If your fat, fine, then your fat. If you want to be skinny, go for it, but don't look for a fucking quick fix. Do something permanent. I'm sorry if I've offended anyone with this post, but that's my opinion. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go walk up a 70 degree hill to buy some cookie dough. |
yeah fatty food is usually cheaper. but Im weary about the govt getting involved in this.
bottom line this is the parents and the individual kids business. if they want to be fat by eating too much, then good for them. |
My opinion
Full of fat people? I don't think this is entirely true. Just look at the poor countries, nations where there's no food. Are those kids fat?
Maybe in the First World countries there are lots of food, specially junk. But thats not the case in the other places, where people die from starvation. I think the media is not really smart when they say something. Anyway, they just want rating.... Am I wrong? |
I suggest it has something to do with today's trends of non-accountablitiy. Aggressive kids? It's hormonal, they're victims lashing out at cruel society. Drugs? Depression? Obesity? Nah, it's not their fault. (This is a pet peeve of mine.) I admit, some people have a genuine hormonal problem, or need counseling - i"ve been there - but most of the kids I see with these problems are making their own choices. I won't go on as long as I'd like to on this, but I really think a big part of the problem is the message we send about accountability.
Edit: That's true, Ronny, but I think she means in this country. Like when I was in Austria, most of the kids my age were really fit. It's a cultural thing there. |
Well, thing is, we're a nation of convenience. I don't think its that healthy food is more expensive than fatty food, or that our shelves are covered with unhealthy food (though they are). I think the whole matter comes down to the fact that a green-bean casserol takes about an hour to make while a pop tart takes three seconds if you put it in the microwave.
All these food companies have heard our cries for instant gratification and have given us just that at the expense of healthiness. In the end, though, I don't think the overweight "problem" is really that big. Sure, I'm overweight by a fair amount, but not so much that I really look it (at least with a shirt on, too much info for ya). As for most the people I see around me, they're pretty fit. We as a country aren't in great shape, but we aren't in bad shape either. And what reason do we really have to be muscle-bound super-citizens anyway? I'm fine with my chub, though I'm working to trim a bit off. |
So...

Then I have to say that fatness (not including the hormonal problems) is just a decision thing. In some way are parents fault, for not giving their kidos the proper education. In some way is our fault, for not picking the good and healthy foods. I was fat, now I'm something between fat and thin. Thats because now I have to walk. Our sedentary lifestyle is another responsable for the actual society fatness(of some countries, including mine). AerodynamicHair has a point saying that time is another reason. Most of the people doesn't like to do real cooking. Don't hate me for saying what I think... |
I've notice that most computer-addicted children are either ridicuolusly fat or ridiculously thin (just go to one of these "cyber camps"). Either way, they are ignoring their body, and never get enough exersise as the kids who run outside and play sports for fun.
|
Not everyone can play sports, though. Out of all of my cousins, I was considered the fat one even though I'm not actually overweight. Why? Because I have a larger build than they do due to not being able to play physical sports. Although I now do press-ups and lift weights, I'm still never going to be as thin and elegant as they are because they're much more 'physically fit' than I am. (Whereas in truth, I excercise more than they do.)
It's not always a question of fat, either. It's peoples build. I can't go below the weight I am now. I know this as fact. But I still 'look' overweight. Some kids look bigger than they are because they have large frames. |
