Techno can pretty much be used to describe all forms of electronic music

if there's a difference between house and trance it's sure as hell not worth learning

My collective "techno" music folder is an almagamation of all these things, regardless of sub-genre, whereas I actually organize other music (like my rock, metal, and video game music) to a certain extent. I'm satisfied with just calling it "techno."

I'm sure there are people who are quite different and would organize this music a number of ways.

Actually, there's a huge difference between trance and house. Trance is more emotional, it's been described as music you can fall in love with. It has more feeling and is generally prettier sounding. It's generally a lot more repetitive and hypnotic.

House on the other hand, is more soulful. It gets its roots in disco and early dance. It's the oldest genre of this type of music and probably the most popular.

Uhm, I see no point in this thread if you aren't asking the differences. If you want to discuss different forms of techno, I could understand. But you're making a whole thread bashing it? Without any good reasons, or even knowing any difference between the different genres of techno/rave music.

Actually, techno is a genre in itself, quite different from house or trance. It's generally more depressing, sometimes adds in tribal beats. Acid is techno. Tribal is techno. Trance/house is not actually labeled techno.

But yeah, you had no point to this thread, did you?

Heh, i've seen that. There not really 'making fun' or else, aren't being mean about it. It is how a lot of that genre of music is, though, thats pretty bad techno, hah.

Eh, I like that kind of music. I don't expect everyone to, just as I hope you don't expect me to like country/rap. ^.^

Mr. Wind-Up Bird 11-17-2004 05:29 PM

I can make techno music by putting a pair of shoes in the dryer.

And this does a much better job making fun of techno music.

Muwahahahah!

Really now what is the diffrence between "more emotional" and "more soulful"? You just can't describe music like that. Its all the same. Im not saying its bad, but its the same.

I'd that chip tune is a bit diffrent that then rest of electronic music though.

[LINE=Lame]You're a difference![/LINE]

Pixie already summed up the difference between house and trance, but if words do you no help, then I shall prove it by song!
Snippets, song snippets.

Ok, so they're long song snippets. They're not complete, and that's what counts.

The first is an example of house. An extended house mix of Plug It In by Basement Jazz feat J.C. Chasez, featured on CD2 as the first in a 80 minute mix by Mark Dynamix, on Sessions One from Ministry Of Sound. I've cut it down to 1:26:234 for your listening pleasure.

"Plug it in, plug it in, baby!"
A likely characteristic with house: The rhodes piano. Chances are you are going to hear a rhodes piano in a tune of house genre.

The second is an example of trance. Xpander by Sasha, if details are correct. This track was featured on Wip3out, then edited down by Christopher Emirzian for use in StepMania.

"Doo doo doo dodoo doo dodoo doo doo doo--what?"
A likely characteristic with trance: The lead synth. Most commercial trance will use a lead synth.

If you can't hear a difference between the two, then you weren't made for comparing music to a worthless cause.

And chiptune rocks. Rock on, chiptune! :D

I probably shouldn't of used emotional/soulful to describe them, but they are two different things. There is a major difference in the sounds of the music. It's hard to describe. I'm sure chicago's music links would show the difference, if I could get them to work.. It keeps saying that I don't have access to that page.

Mr. Wind-Up Bird 11-17-2004 10:43 PM

Your links don't work so my point still stands.
