Out of curiosity, why aren't there more hand-drawn comics?

Although they do take longer, it gives you a much better chance of actually becoming well-known.

I mean, if you really wanted to be internet-famous then you have to at least try for it... despite what you think your comic's not gonna be famous if it's not original.

Or at least, stop using Final Fantasy and Mega Man sprites. There are others out there, you know.

There are lots of hand drawn comics. They are called "comic books" and you can buy them at the store. I'm told the archive goes back for some characters almost a century. My god! Can you even imagine? All those comics and no one reading them! It boggles the mind.

Oh, you ment webcomics. There are lots of hand drawn webcomics too, but most of them suck, but those that are good are infinately better then all but a few sprite comics.

Also, my ten year old brother spends his free time throwing together sprite comics. Some of them are quite good for a ten year old. They are also better then 90% of the sprite comics I've read.

The webcomic community bias against sprites makes me sad, but I know where it comes from. I've seen too many "sprite comics" (and I use that term loosely in this case) that have no characters, no plot and no point. The whole comic is basically "OMG Look Megaman R Fighting a Metroid. That= Funny! Lol!!!11" There are so many sprite comics out there because crappy ones can be made quickly. See enough of those, and you want to shy away from sprite comics forever.

However, there are many good sprite comics out there that actually have original characters and these characters actually stand for something. These sprite comics have plots that go somewhere and deserve to be called sprite comics.

These other "sprite comics" you see out there are not sprite comics. They are monstrosities. Anyone can make the hand drawn equivalent. I see too many stickman and ink-blob hand drawn monstrosities also. Hand drawn does not equal good, and hand drawn does not make a drawing better than sprites. It depends on each case. Some drawings are better than sprites, some sprite comics are better than hand drawn. You cannot say one medium is better than the other, but I think one of them is easier to bastardize.

I don't think the sprite comic artist is concerned with becoming famous. I think the artist is more concerned about telling the story. Without a story, you have no comic. I think the motivation is just that. They enoy making the comics and they want to tell a story.

You guys are probably right...

I guess it doesn't matter the base art... whether it's hand-drawn or spriting... I guess it all depends on how much time you actually spend on making the comic.

Now I'm feeling inspired to work harder on my own webcomic... I'm planning on putting it up in December. Hehe... I'm really excited.

Don't double post, alright?

Also, you might want to check out the rules. They have their own sub-section of the forums way up at the top of the main category.

Anyways on to the topic at hand. The reason I chose to do a sprite comic is that I don't think I can draw all that well. Sure I can draw some things (See Off Topic in the Sticky section for some of my stuff) but I am not confident enough to make my own comic series that I have drawn. Sprites are just easier for me to make and don't take loads of my time. All in all I just like making things that people enjoy. If I can put one smile on someones face with something that I have done. Then it makes all my work worth it.:)

It seems our friend SNAFU has failed to mention that the first link in his signature goes to a very well-done "sprite comic," though a lot of the sprites have been re-worked from their original form, courtesy of SNAFU's sister.

Of course, he also failed to mention that the second link lets you vote for the comic he works on, casting doubt on his statement about not wanting fame. Of course, he's not the original creator of the comic...

Anyways, to answer the question posed in this thread: because a lot of good writers can't draw, but they can handle sprites and spriting. That's about it.

I think what the last people are saying is the main reason. Hand drawn arnt actually harder to do, but when they do it they set there standerd really really high. I have a hand drawn that is interesting. its not up so dont ask. It is easier to fell good about the looks of a sprite. Though how some of the people who make some of these comics must be blind or something. Yes.

Viktor Von Russia 11-24-2004 07:16 PM

I think the reason there aren't more hand drawn comics is mainly because people think comics have to be drawn well in order to be good, which is absurd. Case in point, The Real Life Adventures of Brian and Sosa. It's only stick figures, but I can't get enough of it.

Lost in Time 11-24-2004 07:22 PM

Some people just have no talent what-so-ever. (Look at avatar, my masterpiece.) Even Brain said that he would gladly do a hand drawn comic, if he could draw that is.
