Pet Peeves

[RANT] Ok, this really bothers me, and I had to bring it up. I started a thread so others can respond with there own grammatical pet peeves too. Maybe it will help improve the grammar of some forumites. So this is my pet peeve:
Then and than. People just don't seem to realize that there is a difference in the two words. It just simply irks me to read something like "Black Mage is so much smarter then fighter." C'mon people this is elementary English! Then is used to note sequential order (i.e. I'm going to the store and then I'm going home). Than is used to show a difference between to things (i.e. I like swimming in the ocean better than a pool). There are also some other uses for the two words, but for some reason people seem to get those correct. Still I suggest using a dictionary and figure out when to use each word. [/RANT]

Viktor Von Russia 11-22-2004 11:42 PM

Thank you, sir. I HATE stuff like that. Here are some others that I've noticed:

"Try and" should be "try to"
"Like a said" should be "as I said"
"To much" should be "too much"

If you really want me to go over why these are wrong, I'll be happy to give you a grammatical lecture via PMs. I'm sure nobody else would want to hear it.

Stabbitty Death 11-22-2004 11:55 PM

Some people need to learn the difference between their they'res, theres, and theirs. It's not that hard.

I actually have a valid reason for these myself. I have something called audiophonic dyslexia. I actually cannot distinguish a difference between words that sound alike when I read them. Now if you asked me to spell the possesive form of they I could easily do that. But I always have to get people to proof anything I write because of this problem.

Stabbitty Death 11-23-2004 12:05 AM

That of course is a valid reason (and don't think that I was reffering to you when I posted), but what annoys me are the people who have no reason and just don't care.

Aeria 11-23-2004 04:13 AM

When using the word I, making it a capital. Really, most of us aren't jus' doing it because it looks cool. Also capital letters at the beginning of sentences, names, countries, days and so on. And punctuation. Separating sentences won't get you recognition for being terribly smart, but not doing it will get you looked down upon as being the local doofus.

Learning this things (Not jus' what I said, but what the others have said too) will make the difference between you being considered an intelligent human being, and a total goon. If you want the name "Newb" associated with thoughts of you, feel free to disregard these suggestions, as others will disregard your opinions.

Pixie 11-23-2004 04:49 AM

Heh, I'm forever typing the wrong form of a word and not realizing it. I try to catch myself, but for some reason, I rarely ever do.

Also, people who talk on forums or online and can't seem to make a comprehendable sentence. How hard is it to type legibly. I'm sorry that I don't want to read a huge amount of typos and butchering of the english language. Yes, I make mistakes. I make typos. I sometimes mess up forms of words. I do not let myself send a message that's illegible. How hard is it to backspace when you're doing a post?

Zero 11-23-2004 08:12 AM

My grammatical pet peeve on the forum: when people say "u" instead of "you." Or, for instance, make a sentence with no proper capitalization and punctuation at all. Although, I probably break enough grammar rules myself.

It still makes that person sound like a retarded eight year-old in my head.

adamark 11-23-2004 10:20 AM

Ehh... I don't care mostly. We're on an online forum. Nothing too spectacular is going to be communicated here, anyway. Grammar and spelling and such need only be good enough to understand the intended message. *shrug*

Aeria 11-23-2004 10:51 AM

But Adamark, we can at least keep up the illusion that behind these monitors are intelligent human beings, even if we aren't.

How about those people who don't double check their posts? And they have a typo on a critical word that completely changed the whole meaning of the post, but they don't realize it 'cause they never went back to check?

Oh! And mods who know how to type but joke about being totally retarded! It's hurts enough to see it when it's unintentional, but when it's meant to happen it makes me want to cry.

Toastburner B 11-23-2004 11:08 AM

My pet peeve regarding on-line forums?

Grammar Police.

:p

Seriously, thought. This really does bug me, and I have been guilty of it in the past. I have seen arguments devolve by the person losing attacking the intelligence of the other by pointing out nit-picky mistakes. It's okay to correct a person, but do so nicely.

Cloud Strife 11-23-2004 11:12 AM

At the risk of sounding like a technical jerK, people that use 'good' and 'well' interchangably when they should only be using one or the other. That's probably my biggest pet peeve. Not sure what I'm talkin' about? Here's an example:

"Hey, man, how're you?"
"I'm doin' good."

That shouldn't be 'good', that should be 'well'.

Another pet peeve of mine, probably one of the biggest ones I have, is someone coming up to me and bragging to me how 'totally smashed' they got, and all the 'funny (read: idiotic)' things they did while in said drunken state. Grrrr...

Technocrack 11-23-2004 01:12 PM

My pet peeves? Hmm... I have a few.
1) People who think that, just because I'm a Juggalo, I'm an illiterate moron. I'll admit that quite a few Juggalos ARE illiterate morons... But for every illiterate moron Juggalo, there are 5 good ones.

2) Guys who beat their wives... Or any other woman, for that matter.

3) Closed-minded bigots. See also 'Nazi' or 'Redneck'. Since I live in Alabama, this is a major problem for me.

4) Leet speak... I HATE, despise, and loathe leet speak... It makes me want to harm someone or something.

AerodynamicHair 11-23-2004 02:18 PM

I'm not really one for grammar hating, though I will get on to my friends for using "u" instead of "you." I don't mind in IMs, but when you're on a forum, you've got the time to spell it out.

But yeah, we all misspell things every once and a while. So, I don't really mind to many grammar problems, even when it comes down to the "dude t3h r0x0r is linkg madnn!!1!" As long as I can understand, I'm good. My opinion of them might not be too high, but that has more to do with the content than the presentation.

And I will try to translate my dialect online sometimes as well. Everyonce in a while, I'll type something like "Friggin'," which isn't really a word, but I say it anyways.

Heavy 3PO 11-23-2004 03:32 PM

I've been reading the Forums for some time now, and just recently started posting. However, I'm not entirely sure what "Leet Speak" is. If it is the complete breakdown of English grammar that is think it is (ie: T3h B/\/\ iz Wo0t!!1!), then I completely agree.

Now, I may be out of touch with reality, but I can't for the life of me understand what people are trying to say when they post something like that. Standard typos, such as not capitalizing or using 'there' instead of 'their', happen. They happen to everyone. I'm sure everyone on here understands that and can get past it. But when you come up with a seemingly random string of characters and expect people to read it as though it were a standard language, I have to say that is my biggest pet peeve.

Yeah, that is the bloody massacre of the English language that has become known as 'leet'.

I understand that occasionally, someone is going to make a typo or grammo such as you mentioned. My peeve is when they just simply don't know the difference. You can read through the forums and find people, who ALWAYS use then when it should be than. That really gets on my nerves.

Derfel 11-23-2004 05:33 PM

hah Zero said mine, but add the r, like u r awesome. It just looks so childish

Vicious 11-23-2004 06:36 PM

People that type in ebonics.

Lost in Time 11-23-2004 07:34 PM

Well, typing 'OMG' and 'ROTMFFLMMFAO' is just plain idiotic.

But those small english mistakes that I do get often. Because, countless times I have failed English class at school. But I know enough to get the "Theres" Right.

Don't hate me because I'm stupid.

CatManDo 11-23-2004 07:42 PM

My spelling/grammer is usualy horrible, but there is still one thing i hate to see typed, or hear spoken for that matter.
When people say "I could care less." when what they mean is " I could'ENT care less" however i once was able to preswade my brother because he said he could care less.

Dac 11-23-2004 08:09 PM

Actually..err..saying " I could care less" isn't exactly wrong in the way they mean it ,and you spelt "couldn't" wrong as well because ent is actually a dialect of "isn't that so" in our country.

Viktor Von Russia 11-23-2004 08:56 PM

Well, it depends what they mean. Most of the time (at least in my experience), people use that phrase synonymously with "I don't care." So in general, I think the proper use of that phrase is "I couldn't care less."

Gilgamesh in a Hat 11-26-2004 09:20 AM

My grammer blows, so dont correct me, but I have other pet peeves.

1) really quiet music, either turn it off or blast it people!

2) people who do ANYTHING off-beat, dance, drum, tap your finger, or even bob your head...BUT DO I RIGHT!!!!!!!!

3) stupid people, includes racist's, bigots, and anyone else who play Enemy Territory

4) when the mayonaise from the sandwich you made for lunch sokes into the bread.

5) the move "Auto-potion"

6) people who start a game on easy mode

7) people who cheat their first time through a game

8) people who talk in all caps for no reason. (i.e MY DOG IS BROWN...what does i.e stand for?)

9) fat/ugly chicks who think they're hot

10) people who disagree with me when im right.

FoamyFrickinKrzE 11-26-2004 09:56 AM

I Hate The Way Everyone Puts Ya, Or Yea. When It Is Simply Yes, Or Yeah

shiney 11-26-2004 10:14 AM

I hate when people start all their words with caps. I really, really hate that. Your/you're, their/there/they're, we're/where/wear, to/too/two, simple grammatical mistakes that even I have been known to make and yet grate on my nerves at every moment.

And don't get me started on this u r 2 gr8 bullshit that's all over the internet. Every time someone says 'ur' it is like fingernails on a blackboard.

DragonDaimyo 11-26-2004 11:41 AM

I really hate it when people on a forum will post once on a topic (especially when they post something stupid) and then they will never explain their post or respond to those who try to point things out. It doesn't happen very much here, but I've seen a couple of places where there's just one or two posters that do that constantly.

Thanatos 11-27-2004 02:33 PM

Something else that really irks me is when you post something on a forum, and then like two posts later in that thread, someone posts basically the same thing you just posted, but word slightly differently. Then everybody begins responding to that post, further giving credit to that poster, as if I never even said anything! C'mon people if someone has already made the point you were going to make, don't just restate it!

FoamyFrickinKrzE 11-27-2004 02:53 PM

i hate when preps go around wearing stuff from HotTopic because they saw it in LimitedToo thats BS posers

death to preps

Terex4 11-27-2004 03:56 PM

Since the grammar thing is a dead horse at this point, I'd have to say my next biggest pet peeve is when I have a word on the tip of my tongue but can't say it. I'll spend what seems like forever trying to figure out the word I want.

Silly Kitty 11-27-2004 05:43 PM

I can't really complain about grammer. There are those few people who do post in caps or, even do the ur r 2 gr8 l8er. That annoys me too.
Other than that I'm pretty patient. At least i try to be.

Funka Genocide 11-27-2004 10:12 PM

I'm annoyed by people who become indignant over trivial things. I can't understand why someone would lose it over some of the things people lose it over.

relax, breathe deeply and count backwards from ten

"you saying I don't know how to count!"

FoamyFrickinKrzE 11-28-2004 02:56 PM

yes, i know what you mean damn...that happens to me alot
'when you have a word on the tip of your tounge'

Xellos 11-29-2004 07:03 PM

I would have to say.....

1) swearing
2) littering
3) average teenage behavior (no class)
4) arrogance

Those are the top four that I can think of (not in order).

Gorefiend 11-29-2004 09:06 PM

Shiney, I appologize for having accidentally done at least one of my posts with all the words capitalized. The nxt sentence is nothing more than an example of what I mean, and what I think he meant. Don't read it Shiney, unless you want to be annoyed. Like This, For Those Of You Who Don't Get It.

Also, my pet peeves are:
Grammar wise- leet. It just plain sucks. And, most of those simple errors that you know that the person could have corrected had they tried. I try to reread all my posts, and change last minute things as much as possible.

Other things- people who use slang, even though I don't get it, and they know it.

People who make up senseless slang, like in my school (SOPA (soup, in spanish) has come to mean "gay." Not to offend anyone. Sorry.)

People who act out steriotypes for no reason, like a Russian friend of mine who has seen 8-mile one too many times, and has decided he's a "nigga." (once again, not to offend anyone.)

The whole word on the tip of the toungue thing.

Computer crashing/blackouts JUST WHEN I WAS ABOUT TO SAVE MY FREAKING GAME, AFTER 5 HOURS OF LEVELING UP/PROGRESS!!!!!!! AGH!!!!!!! (sorry to anyone who hates all caps, but I think it's justified right about now.)

Meister 12-06-2004 01:12 PM

People who put three question marks at the end of a question every time. One is enough, man, according to Terry Pratchett you're halfway insane!

People who press the 'open door' button on the train more than once. Once it beeps, it registered, it just takes a while to open! You're not going to miss an appointment if the door opens half a second later, lady!

People who wear pants that cost more than my entire wardrobe, similar shirts and enough gold to put Mr. T to shame while thinking they're ghetto underdogs. If you can afford that and the 12 terawatt speakers in your car, you're not that bad off.

Roland 12-06-2004 02:56 PM

The word "why". Normally, it doesn't annoy me, but people think they're funny when they reply to everything with the word "why".

Toastburner B 12-06-2004 03:14 PM

Well...since we have gone out of the realm of computers.

People who sneeze like sissies.

Seriously, I have no idea why this bugs me so much, but it does.

You know what I mean. You're sitting next to someone, and they kind of squeak. You turn and ask, "What was that?" And they say, "I sneezed."

Sneeze? A sneeze is supposed to do something for you. It's your body clearing out your airways. That was a squeak, not a sneeze! When you sneeze, mean it!

But, this is probably because when I sneeze, I just cut loose and let it fly. My sisters say that when I sneeze it changes the air pressure in the room and makes their heads hurt.

Rhana 12-06-2004 03:45 PM

I do that too. I got the entire dining hall to echo with one sneeze. That was fun.

*Ahem* I loathe people who talk in chat-speak, or whatever that abomination of the english language is called. You know what I mean;I refuse to even type it as example. Not just typing it, but actually saying stuff like "LOL" out loud. It makes me feel violent.

Dante 12-06-2004 03:51 PM

I hate happy people. From my twisted shell of jealous angst, the wrath of Dante shall strike forth!

SuzuranLily 12-06-2004 10:37 PM

I don't like to be bothered unesscessarily. If people have a good reason then I don't mind, but if not I tend to get annoyed.

What's wrong with three question marks??? Seriously though, I sometimes use multiple questionmarks for emphasis. But I don't alwas use 'em.

Another pet peave...people who try to use big words when the speak, but can't actually pronounce them. Or someone who is constantly asking "How do you spell..." Use a dictionary idiot!!!!!!!!

Meister 12-07-2004 04:48 AM

Emphasis, yes. "Hi, what are you doing tonight???", no.

This has always kind of annoyed me.

I mean...seriously. How am I suppose to look it up in a dictionary if I don't know who to spell it?

Very simple. I mean you should have a rough understanding of ho the word should be spelled just using simple phonetics. So let's take the word Technology. To begin with you should know that it begins with a T. So we will flip over to the Ts. Now it should be simple to figure that the second letter is an E because that is the only letter that makes that sound. So we flip through till we find words beginning with Te. Now comes the tricky part. we know that the next lett is going to be either a c or a k, well c comes first alphabetically so we will start looking at words that begin with TEC. Now since there are three ways that C can make the sound we are looking for (C, CK, or CH) we have to figure out which one. And we know that the next sound is going to be an N sound so we are going to look through the words in this order TECH, TECK, TECN. Well we get to TECH and we find a word Technology. Now this looks like it might be our word, so we read the definition and sure enough it's our word.

Now I don't expect a kid K-2 to know enogh about the English language to do this, but anyone older should. Basically just by hearing a word you should have a rough idea of how it's spelled and can from there find the correct spelling. And you actually learn something in the process, because if I just tell you how to spell the word, next time you need to use it, you'll probably have forgotten.

Rhana 12-08-2004 03:00 PM

I'm starting to get irritated by people whose signatures are far larger than their average post size. That's a lot of people on here, unfortunately. I understand if someone has a lot they want to share about themselves in their sig, but maybe they could just rotate the contents every once in a while rather than dumping it all at once. Or, preferably, say more than one line. Or maybe not show the sig in very short posts. It's just hard for me to focus on their post when it is overwhelmed by the flood of slogans below.

I bet I just irritated a lot of people with this, but meh, it's the truth.

icythaco 12-08-2004 03:30 PM

Yeah, I have to agree. If people had alot to say, that really doesn't bother me. But what gets on my nerves is the way people make the text in their signatures HUGE. The bigger a piece of text is, the less seriously I take it.

Rhana 12-08-2004 03:35 PM

What's on this page is okay to me. But some people have like ten lines of text in their sigs, which makes it hard to read the thread.

I personally, think that I sneeze too loud. I annoy quite afew people. Maby you're one of the ones who wouldn't.

People also think I shiver weird. It's more like a small spasm for me followed by sucking in air to make a hissing sound. When I write it down, it does sound kinda weird but it's natural for me.

The_Phat_G 12-09-2004 11:28 PM

Biggest peeve: Annoying laughs. This is a really big problem, as I spend most of my time hanging around geeks. Something about a sound similar to that of an asphixiating donkey on crack really bugs me.

Smaller peeve: Insubordination. This applies mostly to my little brother, whose face I often want to break because he's such a twit.

Regular-sized peeve: Grammar and spelling. Whenever I see a poorly written paper/post/typed/written thing I need to fix it or I'll get face cancer. Needless to say, I've gotten face cancer many, many times before.

Xellos 12-11-2004 03:00 AM

I have that same problem. I always have a habit of squirming in my chair whenever one of my teachers makes a typo and such.

I also find gum chewing, really, really annoying. I mean people can chew their gum, just don't chew it with your mouth open! And then when they get frustraited they start to make a clicking sound (sorta) with it and it echoes off inside of my head.
