So... any tips on making funny webcomics?
I can write some pretty funny stuff, but I figured I'd ask here anyways. Does anyone have any advice or comments from a fan-based point of view?
Thank you. |
In this day and age, I think people always find violence funny. Hell, BM from 8 bit makes me laugh my head off with his evil violence. Also, if you are making a comic, give the characters the best and most original, yet funny, personalitys that you can think of. A sock fetish, for example... *sound of slap* What? I think that's funny...

Ironically, I already had a character with a sock fetish planned. Thanks, though.

If you want to make a webcomic, make it a sprite comic. People are impressed by good sprite comics. They're hard to come by.
|
Make it an exact copy of 8-bit or Mega Tokyo. Trust me on this.

Ignore Mr. Wind-Up Bird.
Your life (And comic career) will be much better off for it. |
I would have to say that the biggest thing is to make sure it's original. There is nothing more frustrating then you making a good comic to everyone says "Oh this is just a *insert comic here* rip off!!" I have seen it way too much in this forum.
Here are some more tips I have seen that people like in this forum: 1) Pick either a solid story or complete randomness. Not a bit of both. 2) Keep to a certain format. Comic book style or panel style or your own creation. 3) When making a sprite comic NEVER use bright colors. Most readers like darkness. 4) Make DAMN sure that your comic is readable and who is saying what!! Biggest frustration!! 5) See quote below: Quote:

Be sure to use final fantasy sprites and have the "black mage" character wants to kill people, but fails in hilarious ways! Or have one of the characters like swords or some other weapon and talk about it all the time! When someone points out that you are copying another, more established, webcomic, claim it's a "homage" and continue unabaited.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure to point out that your sprites are a different color. BONUS POINTS: Make your sprite comic in Paint and save it as a jpeg or bmp. Or If sprites aren't your thing, then drawing is the way to go. Be sure to draw your characters in a cliched anime style, with emphisis on giant eyes and pointy hair. It also helps to have no concept of anatomy, proportion, or perspective. Be sure to write the main character as an idealized version of yourself who gets into lots of trouble with sassy, large-breasted, pink-haired women. These are just tips I've absorbed from reading webcomics for three years. Edit: Does everyone really ignore me? That makes me sad. :( |
In a way, mr. wind up bird's advice helps. It tells you what not to do!

Mr Wind Up Bird is right. The only way to make a funny webcomic is to totally rip off someone else's story, style, characters, and jokes. Down to the letter. IF you don't believe this, go read some random webcomics. Especially that parody of Metal Gear Solid, which isn't funny at all. Ever. Penny-Arcade sucks too. It's totally a ripoff of Tsu and Chan. :D |
