The Price is Right...
I was just wondering whether or not the price of Nuklear Age would be raised or lowered if it was taken up by a publisher: Personally, I think it is at a great price right now at 33 bucks...but once you do (hopefully) get published, would you have any control over how much the publisher is selling it for? Or do they set their own prices without regard to the writer?
|
They set their own prices but it would be significantly cheaper. Around the $15 - 20 range for the paperback and $5 - 10 more for the hardcover.
|
Really, that cheap?...interesting...
What percent of the sales would you probably recieve? |
I don't know specifically, but I would get a lesser percentage.
The reason it's cheaper to buy the book through a traditional publisher is that they produce millions at a time. So the raw materials are bought in bulk and therefore each unit is cheaper. Nuklear Age is currently print-on-demand so the raw materials for each book cost more per unit sold. |
...But the small amount of money lost by lowering the price of the book is easily compensated by having a well-known publisher's name on the cover, right?...I mean, the publisher's name alone can be incentive enough for bookstores to purchase your book, thereby opening it up to a much larger range of consumers...
...Why else would people want to go through all the hassle of getting their book published, if not to make it more available and accesible to the world at large? You could have written the greatest book in the world, but you won't get much money from it if the majority of the population doesn't even know it exists...this is why writers need publishers, and this overwhelming need results in the publishers having alot of material to choose from. Inevitably, this highly-uneven ratio of writers to publishers can lead to some really great pieces of literature being lost in the shuffle. Anyway, thanks for answering my question. |
Money, shmoney. Getting the book printed but a traditional publisher would get it in more people's hands. That's the important thing.
That and using my proven popularity in the self-publishing era as leverage for a better than average contract :) |
Speaking of good unkown books...... look for the progress of the human mind by the Marquis de Condorcet. In actuality his name is huge and so is the title of the book, but that should be enough to go on. He is around the french revolution in time and it's a wonderful; yet, underappreciated book. I suggest you attempt to find it and read it. Its worth the hastle to find it. Its similar to Jeffersons works and rather beautiful at how he draws conclusions. The translation isnt that bad considering that it was origionally written in French.
