Obscure Games

Yes, we all know about the well known games. Your Marios, your Final Fantasies, and your Mega Men... But what about those obscure games that not many people have heard of? Were some of them good? bad? Funny?

Obscure games are my forte, especially NEW ones. Over the course of my life I have owned and play over 200 NES games, not including the one cartrige with about 108 games on them. So here are some of my favorites:

Caveman Games: The Olympics...with cavemen. Choose between such wonderful characters like Gronk, Uhga, Org, and Vincent (he's a little wierd) and go at it. Events include the Club Bash (where you repeatedly bash your opponent with a club and distract them by saying "look over there"), the shot put (using another cavewoman as the shot put) and making fire.

8 Eyes: Basic Idea: You're some seordsman with an eagle named Curtis and you have to fight your way through 8 castles and beat the bosses (who are all masters of some random weapons) and collect the 8 gems that they leave behind. Very much like Castlvania in the level design and enemies, but different in the sense that you can use curtis to fly around and hurt enemies or gather items (this also allows a second player to play as Curtis).

Pantom Fighter: You're a Phantom Fighter in feudal Japan charged with exorcising various towns and collecting magic scrolls to improve your powers. Not a bad game, but a bit repetitive.

So, now that I've enlightened you with some of my obscure games (oh and I have so many more) let me know about yours.

I can't think of many games I have that are obscure, but I can think of one. R.A.D. for the PS2 is an awsome robot fighting game that no one I know has ever heard of. There was no publicity, few reviews, no ads in magazines, and very few updates during production. When I first heard about it I thought it sounded awsome, and when it was released I started looking for it in the normal gaming stores (EB, gamespot, etc.) and out of all the stores, I saw 1 copy and immediatly bought it, and I haven't seen it in any stores since then. Basically, giant alien robots in the future invade, and one company creates a giant robot to counter it. The plot sounds weak, and the voice acting is horrible, but the game was extremely fun and one of my favorite PS2 games ever.

Evil Zone [PSone]: Just like watching a hyperactive anime. It's a 3-D fighting game with a control system that a toddler could master. Essentially...ONE BUTTON attacks [but make combos with the d-pad], and the other button blocks. You have your Power Ranger lookalike char, your Jap Schoolgirl with a samurai sword, a big bounty hunter dude voiceovered by the same guy who does Col. Campbell from MGS...Plus the adventure modes are modeled just like a TV show. It's insane. And it proves once again, I'll buy anything with a big-boobed girl on the cover o.o

Startropics/Startropics II [NES]: These two came out shortly before the NES's downfall, but they're some of the best Zelda-esque games the system had to offer. You star as Mike, who is either off saving his uncle from space aliens and getting side-tracked in sub-plots all the time, or getting sent back in time to Cavemen Eras, DaVinci's time, etc, looking up Tetris pieces.

Dragon Warrior 1 through 4 [NES]: Come on. These are some of the daddies of RPG's, helped them get off the ground. Nothing beats slaughtering little slimes to the most repetitive battle tune in the world.

I got a few that while many people know, they aren't recconized enough to be loved.

Breath of Fire III (PS1): While many people know the series, this one still floats in the back and goes forgotten. Such a great stroyline, unfortunatly your SUPPOSTA lose like 8 or 9 battles. It gets stupid after a while.

Brave Fencer Musashi (PS1): How do you NOT love this game? While it's storyline is very RPG (probably because it was made by Squaresoft) the game play is not, and kicks ass. At some points it's very platformy with a bunch of mini games and a few puzzles. Yet the hack and slash battle system and incredibly great easy-to-travel-yet-huge map is beyond love. Plus it comes with a free FF8 demo. It says FF8 will come out soon.

Ristar (Sega Gennisis): I never owned it, but I rented it 4 times. I loved it so much! Anyone who has a copy of this kid's cartoony platformer, give to me. I'll pay big bucks for it.

I re-submit Mischeif Makers.

Cyclones (PC): One of the first FPS games to allow mouse-look, and a pretty decent game in its own right that no one's heard of. The live-action FMV cutscenes were a bit cheesy, though, as those types of things tend to be.

Body Blows: Galactic (Amiga): I think this is where the people who made Evil Zone got their inspiration from, since this one also used only one button (and there wasn't a block button this time.) Unfortunately it never got ported to the PC, so I only got to play it a couple of times at the Amiga-only computer store (yes, an Amiga-only computer store) that I went to a vouple of times back when I lived in Sudbury. The original Body Blows game got ported to the PC, but it wasn't as good.

Interesting, I've never heard of a bunch of those, but I do own both Startropics games and all of those Dragon Warrior games as well.

Startropics: One of my favorites. I mean you beat up on bad guys with a yo-yo. Plus, you get to fight Dracula. Coolness to the max

Dragon Warrior 1-4: You have encountered a slime...You attack....You have destroyed the slime...You have encountered a green slime....You have encountered a gold slime...You ahve encountered an ogre (finally some change)....who has morphed into a slime (crap!)

Wizards and Warriors 1-3: I'm sure some of you haev heard of this one. My mom is obssessed with this one. She loves it, except she keeps falling into this one cave and dies all the friggin time.

Survival Kids for Gameboy... color, maybe. You turn 10, you are on a boat with your dad, it crashes. You wake up on an island with only the pocket knife your father gave you for a present. Woo. This game uses such a great... survival ish system. I dont know, I remember it had some ads but no one has ever talked about it and I could never find it to buy... but I want it bad XD

Axelay is another good one I dont hear anyone talk about as well. (SNES)

Monkey Hero for Playstation. This game was like a Zelda clone, only youre a monkey, and you eat peaches instead of picking up hearts, and you have a staff. It was fun for a while, but then I had to turn it back in.

(Why do I only rent obscure games?)

Hmm, Ill have to go look for Survival Kids...

And, unfortuanetly, Patricoo, Im sure everyone knows Brave Fencer Musashi. Although I dont understand why everyone likes it so much, I thought it was funny and interesting to play but I could never get anywhere in it...

IHateMakingNames 12-14-2003 05:58 PM

I remember seeing an Ad for survival kids, and reading the thing about it in Nintendo Power... I wanted that game so much, but never got it...

Atronflame 12-14-2003 06:07 PM

I felt the same way, but I could never find it anywhere.
