Help with Star Wars related stuff - for my book

Okay, some of you may or may not know, but I'm just finishing up one of my stories that I'm about to go get edited, then I'm going to bug someone till they publish it. Now my next few projects are ready, but I need help with a STar Wars related one I had.

Here's the jist: I'm going to put it between Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2. In thus Revan finds himself being challenged by a completely insane dark jedi who wants his custom-made, powerful lightsabre because the he thinks that lightsabres talk to him. He's insane and has hidden away like a hermit for years, so nobody knows about him and he never reveals himself. He, simply through being insane, is somehow able to split his consciousness and weild multiple lightsabres using only the Force in variating different styles, completely independently.

here's the real kicker: I'm writing two books, really, in one. The first one is Revan reformed to the Light, and the other one is when Revan takes over the galaxy at the end.

The only problem I have is, with the exception of the movies and KOTOR, I don't know anything about the star wars world. Sure, basic stuff like Empire = bad and Force Powers etc, but I don't know about the worlds and I don't know much besides the Outer Rim, a couple of the races like the Bothans and Huttese.

Which is why I'm asking for help. This book I'm writing could really kick ass. I just need help with it. Does anyone have any idea where multiple sites would be for this? Or any suggestions?

wait. you're writing a book about star wars...?

Dynamite220 12-28-2004 12:08 AM

What's wrong, Adamark? It wouldn't be the first time. If a book fills a plothole which games and/or movies don't cover, then it's publishable, even if it's not original.

As for information, I tend to stear clear from fan sites because they tend to hold more rumers than facts. I get from your post that you haven't seen any of the movies yet. Rent em'. Even the bad ones would have useful info for you. Also, I suggest reading Shadows of the Empire, the book, not the game. There is a lot about various planets in it.

I'd suggest venturing to your local bookstore or amazon.com and looking for A Guide to the Star Wars Universe by Bill Slavicsek. I was given the 2nd edition as a Christmas present about 6 years ago, so it's quite possible that it's been updated since then. It's essentially an encyclopedia of everything and everyone from the Star Wars Universe (hence the title).

Hope that helps, and good luck!

Actually, I said "Except for the movies and Kotor I" so I have seen all the movies. And I'll check out the Star Wars universe one. I saw a book in the store a wihle ago but it basically overviewed personalities like Luke and Vader completely covering the movies and hardly mentioned Exar Kun for more than thirty seconds.

All I really want is planets and areas little known beyond the Outer Rim. But hey, hopefully this thing includes planets.

The book covered some of the planets, as well as many of the alien races. I just looked on amazon.com, and the 3rd edition is there with updates up to and including Episode I. Looks like it's a really good deal on there, too.

You should be careful with this, because if it isn't fairly accurate with the rest of the Star Wars universe continuity, the rabid fanbase will tear your book to shreds and your book will fail before it hits shelves. Unfortunately, the only way to do that accurately is read most of the books, of which there are hundreds. I've skipped quite a few myself, and found that even after one or two books I had missed important events that I needed to go back and read up on before I could understand the rest of it.

Again, be careful. Writing a book for a series with this big of a fanbase is a tricky business, so best of luck to you.

Yess. To keep continuity, you will have to read the books. An absolute must. Maybe not all of them, but certainly the ones around the time peroid your writing about and a little bit before. That should give you enough events to reference from. And they are the only sure fire way of knowing all of the stuff you'll need. I would help you out, but I haven't read many from the time period your wanting, I've only read the ones that take place after the movies.

As for a good website resource, you can't forget the databank:

Oh haven't yet.

And as mentioned the time period it's in is in the Old Republic times, before Luke even was born. Hell before Vader was born. Back when the jedi were plentiful. That's why I need to know who was there before the new republic, like the older figures and the history.

I'm gonna look into that book.

actually, on the jedi...maybe not plentiful. After all at the end of Kotor there's like a handful at the most and at the start of KOTOR II there's none but you and your comrades.

So long as I remain somewhat faithful to jedi powers and how I explain Kor-thai's insane skill in the force, it won't bomb, I hope.

How far back do you want to go. Like KOTOR far, Empress Teta far, or just before the Clone Wars? I'm a big Star Wars fan and I read the entire 3rd edition of the S.W. Guide to everything. I can also name almost every planet in the Outer Rim:
Endor, Bakura, Alzoc III, Zhar, Ylesia, Bespin, Veronat, Hoth, Ison, Wayland, Sullust, Eriadu, Sluis Van, Dagobah, Clak'Dor VII, Tatooine, Ryloth, Pzob, Barab I, Gamorr, Honoghr, Kessel, Yavin, Mon Calamari, Sernpidal, Almania, Bastion, Helska, Dathomir, Muunilist, Garqi, Dantooine, Belkadan, Yaga Minor, Agamar, Wayland, Dubrillion, and there is also sectors that host hundreds of planets: Corporate Sector, Tion Cluster, Hutt Space (Nal Hutta is in the inner Rim), Cron Drift, Meridian Sector, the Empire (after it was defeated it retreated to the edge of the Outer Rim), Elrood Sector, Minos Cluster, Senex-Juvex Sectors (its literally on the border of the Inner & Outer Rims), Ssi-Ruk Star Cluster, Kathol Sector, and the Unknown Regions, a huge vast area of unexplored space home to a billion (figurative) planets (including the Chiss homeworld). On top of this there is more planets in the outer rim, but I dont know them.
