Is Fruits Basket as lame as it looks?

My brother just bought some of the dvds and after watching for about five minutes I decided it was trash. It just looks like generic anime show #1104

Has anyone else heard of it? And if you disagree, please explain to me why I should bother watching it.

I read a review on it and recieved the impression that it is rather gay.

Why would you spend money on something without knowing if you might like it or not?

Seems rather wasteful to me.

Edit: Oh, and please don't use gay as an insult, unless you mean literally... it's such an unimaginative and ineffective insult.

Okay okay, if you're obsessed with fanservice, exploding heads and 30-minute fight scenes - this is the wrong anime for you. It's a simple, light-hearted drama about a cursed Japanese family (they change into animals when they are hugged by a member of the opposite sex) and the girl that finds out about them. It's really funny and has lots of cute bishounen running around - so how can you lose? If you didn't like it, I suggest just seeing the first 4 episodes or so - if you still loathe it, well, can't say I didn't try. But you should really give it a try! I mourn all those who don't watch up to the introduction of the insane permanently-high older brother who turns into a snake and has no problems wearing a wedding dress.

And I shall spare you all by not telling BlackMageGirl! about this thread. There. My good deed for the year.

Oh, and it definitely isn't shounen-ai or shojo-ai - completely hetero relationships for all you homophobes out there. *wink*
