Sprite Comic Poll

1 Attachment(s)
I have a started a series of web comics that have megaman in them. If you would pick a theme for a sprite comic what game would it be?

Loyal 01-14-2005 11:54 PM

Final Fantasy.

Megaman is somewhat generic and used WAY too often.

Chrono Trigger is one game, and you can only pull so many gigs from one game.

Nintendo characters... Just no. The spriting style between each is too different to make it look good. Having it from one game, fine. Having a whole bunch of different characters from a whole bunch of different games (i.e. Link, Samus, and Kirby), not fine.

[EDIT]: And they aren't ALL based on games. Once I finish my sprite sheets, I'll start an entirely original comic. Scratched sprites and just about everything else.

final fatasy is the best one *but then tis the best*

but a nintendo one would be funny metriod meets mario :P or Yoshi in legend of zelda:marioish cap or.....

Samus meets mario
You have to save the universe by killing bowser... with your laser gun.... which fires laser powered bolts..... which also fire lasers

HybridMantis 01-15-2005 03:11 PM

Do you think the comic is any good?

Loyal 01-15-2005 06:30 PM

To be honest, no.

There's no moving mouths, no plot, no humor, something that could be concieved as self-depreciation (Bashing your own material for pity, or whatever). It's also a bit... blurry, around the lines. Is that a .JPG/.JPEG? Worst format for spriting. Ever. Use .PNGs or .GIFs.

Completly original storylines are a must for any new sprite comic to suceed. Following the actions of Video Game charachters has been done. Completely original sprites aren't neccesarry, but try to add personality to your sprites. Other than non human/disproportionate changes to sprites most change from the beginning sprite are welcomed. But in all honesty the most important thing is story. Very few get into sprite comics to be artistic, so that is not expected of you. But if you keep making more sprites and sticking with it you will have a vastly improved repitoire of skills for making your comic.

Gee... I wonder why you people love Final Fantasy comics... >_>

To be honest, neither. They are all abused and overused.

And Mantis... your comic is sh*t.

Loyal 01-20-2005 06:42 PM

...Just so you know, the word "shit" isn't banned here. Neither is any of those other bad words.

Way to be blunt there Nestea.

Mantis, what you have there is the uttermost basic of sprite comics. It's something I would never think of publishing on the web. You have to start somewhere, but that needs some serious polishing. Here are some suggestions:

1) Megaman sprites are a no. Everyone on earth has made a megaman comic at some point, even those who have never heard of megaman and/or don't have internet access. You won't keep readers with megaman sprites.

2) Speech bubbles. Good ones. They're important.

3) The pannels are empty. Where's the backgrounds?

4) Technical stuff: The three pannels are slightly different sizes. Megaman is at a different elevation in each pannel even though he's standing still. The horizon in the first pannel changes elevation behind Megaman. There's a white space under megaman in the first pannel, indicating sloppy colouring. Loyal2NES is right, .jpeg is the wrong format for sprites.

5) Nitpicky stuff: Rounded speech bubbles are always better than square ones. And what's with the "..." in every pannel?

In a nutshell, the comic is sloppy. You need some practise.

The bob and george spriting guide covers both your problems and explains how to re-colour properly ('cause we all gotta start somewhere 8) )

A guide on how to make basic B&G style sprite comics. Because mastering the basics is essential before moving on too better things

Shard's Fancomic Guide, yet another sprite comic guide hosted on B&G. It shows using examples of actual sprite comics what to do and not to do.

Very important! It's the Crash and Bass sprite comic ten commandments. Though more of a guide line showing what not to do, I advise anyone intersted in makeing sprite comics to read this (and listen to them)

Well they are all the on-line guides and turorials for sprite comics that I know. And in my opinion are essential reading for all people starting sprite comics. I hope I've been of help to you AB^^
