Spell Checker?

I really hated it when they got rid of the spell checker on the TWC forums as people would now know that I can't spell worth beans. I don't know if there already was a topic on this, but I figured I'd ask. Can we get some spell check up in here? And maybe a little grammar check while we're on the subject.

I'm assuming, with placement here, it's either intended for those in charge to look into it or for us to add support for the idea, if we have any.

While I don't think you're going to find a grammar checker for a web forum, it's useful to have a spellchecking utility to handle the typos and things commonly entered in a post when one types too quickly or is unobservant. There are times when being able to see how to correctly spell "necessary," for example, comes in handy.

For those who can't spell well at all, this may be a needed utility, as opposed to a convenience. True, it's been my experience, on another forum that has this feature, that a large portion of the members won't bother to make use of it, more so if they typically misspell words more than other members. To clarify, this is not a critique of them or their posts - just an observation about the tool. I'm still going to say that the amount of people who would probably use it is enough to warrant considering spellchecking features.

I hope that they put one in. It really annoys me when I'm reading a post, and I can't even tell what people are trying to say, because they can't type and/or spell well.

An alternative is to open up Word Processor or something, and type in there, then copy and paste to the thread your replying to.

Or just open it up and type words in that you know your spelling wrong, or your unsure of how to spell.

Which brings me back to my point about laziness, basically - if one were unlikely to make use of such a tool already located right near the other posting tools, why would he or she make use of a word processor when posting?

In terms of efficiency, adding a tool to the forum script "wins." In terms of "it will only serve those who are willing to make the effort to help themselves," not having one "wins."

I agree with synkr0nized on his point. The more lazy is a person, the less likely will they utilize a spell-checking option. Now, if it was automatically integrated into the "Preview Post" option, that'd be a whole other story. While many people wouldn't bother to correct their errors, I don't doubt that more often than not, people at least look at their posts before sending them. I know I do, and I've never made any mistake relating to spelling. Ever. And if you find an instance wherein I have misspelled any word, your eyes are deceiving you, or my account had been hacked.

Yes, that works.

Er, back on track, I'll summarize. Spell checking is a nice idea, but will not likely be used by enough people to make up for the work involved with implementing it. However, if it were not a separate option, and instead either included in "Preview Post -" or perhaps instead automatically done via an option in Preferences, with default to on - then it'd work out nicely.

Either way, I don't need it, and I don't have trouble muddling through incoherent posts, so do what you think is best.

I'm also not an administrator, so it really doesn't matter how good I think an idea would be.

But if we get rid of all the bad spellers, who will the people who get their jollies out of correcting them have to make fun of?

We're talking a total breakdown of the geekdom order here. Best to let the mental inferior ones keep their place.

It's for the people who care enough to correct their spelling. I know I'm not the best spellist ever, my mistakes bug the hell out of me when I think they're there.

Somehow, I think that I meant to put this in "Forum Related Stuff", but it wound up here.

Impossible. Try to create a new thread in this forum. The thread is here because a moderator has deemed it worthy.
